@@Ivory805 If you're not going to add a dedicated graphics card you will need a VGA or DisplayPort cable. There are adapters that will go from VGA to DVI or DisplayPort to HDMI, which would be my recommendation. If you're going to add a dedicated GPU, most have HDMI and DisplayPorts. Lower end cards still have DVI. However, I'm not seeing any that have VGA on them anymore.

I recently bought a Dell OptiPlex 7020 SFF PC from eBay for approximately $200.00, and it initially came with the following specs listed below. CPU: Intel Core i7-4790 Quad-Core Processor at 3.60 GHz RAM: 8GB DDR3-1600 HDD/SSD: 500GB 7200RPM hard drive GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4600 OS: Windows 10 Pro (64-bit) I later spent some additional money on upgrades. First, I upgraded the RAM to 16GB, with future plans to further upgrade the RAM to a maximum of 32GB. I also salvaged a 1TB solid state hybrid drive from one of my older non-functional systems, but then I bought a 1TB solid state drive, and with my trusty SATA to USB 3.0 adapter, I cloned my Windows 10 partition from my hybrid drive to my new SSD. The last thing I upgraded was the graphics card, and the particular card that I chose was the ZOTAC GeForce GT 730 Zone Edition with 4GB DDR3 VRAM, as it's the most affordable 4GB graphics card that I could find. With the upgrades in place, my Dell OptiPlex 7020 performs very well with general tasks (Web browsing, watching videos, listening to music) and resource-intensive tasks (video editing, photo editing, animation). As for gaming, I'm more likely to play older PC games from the 1990's via DOSBox and ScummVM.

The first adventure I ever took into these OptiPlex machines was a couple years ago when I bought a 780 for about $100, added an additional 4 GB of RAM and threw in a GT 730 graphics card. Put Linux on it and it's still running. (I know a GT 730 isn't all that great, but it plays old compatible Steam games decently enough.)

Ordered an Optiplex 7020 from Newegg and got shipped a 9020 with a 128 gig SSD instead. Only 4 gigs of RAM but I'm waiting on 8 gigs of DDR3 1600 in transit. I put in a GTX 1650 OC from Palit. Even with the limited RAM I do have I'm running Fallout: New Vegas at ultra detail settings at well over 100 fps in 1080p. I'm using a legacy 42" Toshiba Regza as my display and it works incredibly well. The entire cost? 475 bucks CDN which is less than the price of a PS4 Pro in Canada. I'm adding more storage next week as soon as I can get some extra SATA cables shipped. Thanks for getting me back into PC gaming my friend. Stay safe and all love from Canada.

I know they're old but they play everything I want them to on high settings. 400+ Steam games plus a bunch of MMO games. The SATA port issue is easily overcome by using special cables. They'll let you use all the ports while also having a long GPU card. In the case of the 1660 it only covers two of the ports so the other two can just use normal cables.

Upgraded the Ram to 16GB with some sticks I had and plan to run some distributive computing and possibly some low end GPU gaming with a 1050Ti. The only issue I had is that the fans run way too slow. I took a simple six channel NZXT fan controller I had lying around and put it in the 5 1/4" bay. Wired the fans so that the RPM could still be read on the MB. On offerup too, a Radeon RX 580 8GB for $90 + shipping The 580 made me go drill off the HDD bay to make it actually fit inside. Now I have this sweet budget gaming pc for less than $130 The hunt is long but worth it in the end no less.

Hello! Thank you for providing this incredibly informative video. Last night I won a bid on eBay for an Optiplex 7020 for approximately $108 including shipping. The machine does not have neither an HDD or caddy in its case, nor a power cable, and I did not want to begin regretting the purchase at that point. Personally I did not want to interpret these missing components as serious issues, as the machine-according to the seller-had been tested beforehand, and is in virtually mint condition. As for the seller, they are reputable and the auction or purchase is supported with buyer protection. Fortunately I have a spare power cable laying around, but I had been searching on eBay for Optiplex 7010 HDD caddies since this one is missing, although I do hope that I can find a cheap one. The machine is equipped with a proprietary 3.30GHz Intel Core i5-4590 and 8GBs of RAM. It has no dedicated graphics card, and the machine instead uses its integrated graphical hardware. I just wanted to ask you, though, whether or not you personally thought that this purchase at its price point was worth it at all, and whether you thought that any further maintenance would be necessary before operating this machine.
@TheGameBench4 жыл бұрын
I've spent as much as $120 on these with a HDD and 8GB of RAM with i5's. I would say you didn't get a bad deal. Adding a HDD is cheap. You could find a 1 to 2TB drive for $20 to $30. I also highly suggest adding a 250GB SSD for about $30 as it really will make it feel like a newer computer. As for the HDD tray, I remove the HDD cage so I can put whatever GPU I want in these, but you can find the trays for pretty cheap on eBay. Also, if you want to add more RAM, another 8GB is about $15. I think it's totally worth it. If you're gaming, you can toss a dedicated card in there and with all these upgrades, have spent under $300 for a decent gaming computer. You can run up to a 1060 off the factory power supply with a SATA to PCIe adapter. I feel like that's wroth it and to get a similar system with new parts, you'd be looking at a Ryzen 3 1200 and the cheapest it would come in, is almost $600.

I have the Dell Optiplex 9020, and I got it for just €85 on eBay. The price to performance is incredible. I average about 80-90 FPS in fortnite on performance mode. It came with an i5 4570, an AMD Radeon HD 8570, 4 GB of RAM and 2x 230 GB SATA SSD. But I do plan to putting an i7 4790k and an RX 6500 XT in it soon. So far I only upgraded the power supply to a 500W with the help from a 24 pin to 8 pin adaptor
@TheGameBench7 ай бұрын
Any particular reason you're leaning towards the 6500 XT? Also, 4GB or 8GB model?
@leocorfield7 ай бұрын
@TheGameBench because according to PC bottleneck calculator, the RX 6500 XT has a 0% bottleneck with the i7 4790k, which is the best CPU I could put in my PC
@TheGameBench7 ай бұрын
@@leocorfield Well, the first piece of advice I can give you is to never look at those bottleneck calculators. Their information is dubious at best, and is very misleading. They're trying to boil something that's rather complex into a single percentage figure, and it doesn't work. Also, there are videos on KZbin that show how their figures don't make any sense. It's best to just ignore them. As for the 6500 XT, it's not a good idea to pair one with a 4th Gen CPU, and not because of any bottlenecking concerns. The 6500 XT is problematic in a Gen3 slot due to so many corners being cut. It only has four PCIe lanes, a 64-bit bus and 4GB of memory. So, if assets need to be swapped from the video memory to system memory, you end up with stuttery game play. There is an 8GB model now that helps a lot with these issues, but at it's price, you can buy an RX 6600 and not have any of those issues. People try too hard to avoid CPU bottlenecks and they overthink things, which can cause them to look at things like the bottleneck calculators, and buy a GPU that's just not a good idea. As long as the CPU isn't always at 100%, which can cause stuttering as well, you're simply not getting all of the performance of the GPU. Depending on the game and setting, it not avoidable. In highly optimized games, CPU bottlenecks are a norm. With bottlenecks, you just want to avoid spending too much on a GPU that's going to give the same performance as something cheaper, and this is going to matter with what games you play and at what settings. You might have a heavy bottleneck in one game you play, and next to no bottleneck in another with the same GPU. Anyhow, I wouldn't even consider the 6500 XT. It's a bad value and a bad pairing for the 4th gen CPU. Since you're upgrading to the i7, I would suggest the GTX 1070 or 1080 as being very good pairings at 1080p. Though, I think the RX 6600 is the best deal at around $120 on the used market and isn't a terrible pairing with the 4th Gen i7, while costing about the same as the 1080.

Sure, but that adapter is $12. With the xx10 you have the SATA and USB3 header in the way of any GPU longer than 8.5 inches. So, you'd have to buy cables, totaling to more than $12, to remedy that. Also, you have a loss of about 10% performance going from Haswell to Ivy. My point was that such a compromise over a $12 cable doesn't make sense at the same price. If you're finding 7010's for like $80, by all means, that's a great deal. However, at close to the same price as a 7020 or 9020, it's a bad buy IMO.

a bit late, but since i just recently bought a 7020 without ever knowing this video existed. i got mine off of a auction, well 2 from a auction since i payed a bit much for 1 of them, this came with 1 keyboard, 1 mouse and 2 screens. without a HDD or SSD, it costed me 56$, i already had a old pc with LGA 775 so this was a well needed upgrade, the i5 4590 is a decent powerhouse, but i decided to spend 114$ on a used i7 4790, could have gone for a K for a bit more, but got stuck with this thing since i bid a bit high. Anyways, i was using a 1650 OC around 2000mhz core clock on my old pc which was bottlenecking my cpu, Even now this 1650 bottle necks my cpu on forza horizon 4 max everything. but either way i run max on any game i play with 0 fps drops. TLDR dont bother replacing your PSU, just get a 1650 with the money you would save on buying a PSU, its cheaper in the long end and 1080p is all you would be able to play anyways

Still seems like a decent deal. $170 for a 7020 with a 4790. Best I've gotten those for is about $200. Toss in a 2TB HDD and and 16GB of RAM and you'd be at about that price. Also, I've found that the PSU can even run a GTX 1060.

God dammit man! Here in Indonesia, with i5/i7 3rd Gen, it can go way up to $250 or even $350 due to the processor branding, while the companion components (HDD, PSU, etc) is still working but very trash & low level shit! I wish I can buy these things with that kind of price over there! Because of that, i finally took lower level by catching used G41 LGA775 Motherboard , Core 2 Quad Q9400, 2x4GB DDR3, a 120GB SSD + 1TB used HDD, 450 Watt 80+ PSU, Armageddon Infineon 1000 Case, and used Radeon R7 240 GPU for backup computer & little "casual" gaming rig. A few reasons to also consider an optiplex 9010 is because it has a 24 pin motherboard connector insted of an 8 pin one. I know you can get adapters, but this stuff adds up. If you are going to upgrade it to an i7(third gen) , it is a good amount cheaper than an i7 for the 9020, which won't perform much better for the price. The power supply doesn't matter because anyone who is going to upgrade will be getting a new one. The sata ports getting in the way of the Gpu is no big deal because you can get right angle connectors. I'm sorry for being rude earlier. I'm just saying that you shouldn't necessarily just avoid the 9010.
@TheGameBench5 жыл бұрын
No worries, and those are fair points, but I should say that the 7010/9010 are worth it if you can get them at a better price than a 7020/9020 with an i7, so 3770 vs 4770/4790. Yes, the difference is rather marginal, but when they're about the same price, why not go with the xx20 and save some hassle. I would totally consider a 9010 for the right price... around $170 as you can get around the SATA ports USB port with adapters, but that's going to cost you more than the 8-pin to 24-pin converter. I will say that I am looking for a 7020/9020 with a 3770 to do a video to talk about this, where I'm going to point all this out. I still would flat out avoid Ivy Bridge i5's however.

The xx20 mobos are standard mATX and the mounting for the HSF is standard 115x. If you're talking about any system with this chassis, that is the case. As I already said, the power connector is easily solved with a $12 adapter... it's a moot point. The 2nd gen i5's have worse 1% and .1% lows over the 4th gen. It's an over all worse gaming experience. I wouldn't suggest a 2nd gen i5 anymore, not the 1333MHz DDR3 you'd have to run with it. You're tripping over so many other compromises to avoid one with the xx20 series.
@kyles85245 жыл бұрын
@@TheGameBench Im talking about price vs performance mainly. Ive seen the builds with the other series as well worked with them from finding so many at local electronic dumps thats Ive ran into way more compatibility issues you have to waste on adapters cause even at 12 dollars your dropping price to performance.Also as Ive benched tons of these machines from 2nd gen all the way up to fth gen the 1% and .1% lowers are negligible at best on a spare gtx 1070.The only real difference is pci-e 3.0 compared to pci-e 2.0 on the 2nd gen which doesnt matter with these machines as being cpu bound anyways and almost the same cpu architecture.As for memory Ive also tested low frequency ram with higher latency to higher speeds with lower latency and once again performance is negligible at best.Unless you consider a 3-5 fps difference a worse gaming experience at the price difference from 2nd gen to a 4th gen of 50 dollars more is up to you to decide I guess but in 1080p your pushing well over 100 fps.But considering I have close to 20 of these machines sitting in my shed from 2nd gen to 5th gen I have done extensive testing with the ram modules and that gtx 1070.Thats the only reason I suggested the 790, no proprietary connections, no adapters, lower price for virtually the same performance.
@TheGameBench5 жыл бұрын
@@kyles8524 Well, my testing doesn't match up with yours. There's a clear difference between the 2nd gen and the 4th gen. There's a clear difference between 1333MHz and 1600MHz. You also can't complain about price to performance when you have to buy SATA cables to be able to install a GPU over 8.5 inches. You've just spent the same amount of money. Besides, in the xx20 series, you can run a 1060 on the stock PSU. You don't even have to replace it, so... And a 1070? Hell, the 4th gen is a pretty decent bottleneck for a 1070. It's 1% and .1% lows are on par or even worse than a 1060. The frame rate is sometimes even as low. The 2nd gen is going to be even worse. It's a waste of money to pair a 1070 with one of these i5's. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, but I've seen my testing and there's a clear difference. I have a system with a 2500 to test against. The only way I feel someone should consider any i5 older than a 4th gen, considering the rest of the compromises, is if it were a lot cheaper than an xx20. Especially the 2nd gen. It better be really cheap or what they already have.
@kyles85245 жыл бұрын
@@TheGameBench Yeah but that 1070 wasn't an actual card I was going to use lol it was just for testing purposes cause it was just lying around and I wanted to make sure I hit a cpu bottle neck before I hit a gpu bottle neck which surprisingly in games that were centered around 4 core optimization I was getting about 60% utilization with all the quad cores I tested 2nd-5th gen..But with games obviously made to utilize more than 4 I almost instantly hit 100% cpu utilization.With the sata cables they fit just fine, just slide then under the bottom of the card in front of the pci-e bus not over or around the card, Ive ran into problems like that on other office machines but not any optiplexes.The real bottle neck of these old i5 cpu's is there IPC.I tested that 1070 on my ryzen 3700x with all but four cores disabled and I was getting close to 40 more fps clocked at the same speed with my ryzen processor.But in general I think anyone on a really low budget these i5 office pc's make a good substitute.My buddy wanted to play fortnite and pubg and a few other games so I threw him together a optiplex 790 and some parts I had lying around with that i5 2400, 16 gigs of plain ram and an 8gb rx 480 blower style stock cooler and an some older antec 80+ 500w psu with red and yellow spaghetti colored cables, and out of curiosity tallied up what it would have cost him to build the same thing and it was around 200 dollars.So price wise like you were talking about is pretty good for what you can do.To me thats kind of a crappy computer but to a light gamer I think its worth the price for the performance.Because I dont care if its intel,AMD,nvidia. Doesnt matter whatever is the best price to performance.
@TheGameBench5 жыл бұрын
@@kyles8524 Oh, I won't argue that if you can get a x90 with an i5 for super cheap, they'll game. I'm just saying that I don't see them going for that much in my area, and especially not on eBay. The 990 I bought for testing was $90. For that much it makes zero sense to buy over the xx20, or even the xx10 series. That's what I'm getting at here. I'm not saying they're trash or that you should, under not circumstances, buy one. I'm just saying that for close to the same price as the xx10 and xx20 series they don't make sense as the price to performance, as you say, is worse as you paying pretty much the same money to get less features and less performance. If you're getting these for $50 or less, then that's a different story. As for the SATA ports, I guess it depends on the GPU. Most of the GPU's I tested would slot in, but put a lot of pressure on the SATA cables. Not something I would suggest doing, and IMO, I wouldn't sell one without using some LP cables. It's cutting corners and I wouldn't give someone a product like that, because I wouldn't run my own equipment like that... but that's just my opinion.

The 3010, 7010 and 9010 are recommended BECAUSE you can upgrade the PSU. It has a standard 24 pin power cable. The 3020, 7020 and 9020 have a non-standard connector and become more propriatory, as can be seen at 2:55 So they're actually more limited and harder to work with. Get a Dell 7010 fitted with an i5 3570 ideally, it has 4 DIMM modules to allow upto 32Gb RAM (or 16Gb RAM for a £24 in the UK if you buy from CEX 4x 4Gb modules), upgrade the PSU to a CX500 or similar, and get a short length GTX1060 3Gb for around £100, and a 500Gb SSD for around £40 All in the system should cost around £100 for the base unit, £100 for the GPU, £25 for the RAM, £40 for the SSD, £45 for the PSU.... £310 total spend for an i5 quad core boosting to 3.6Ghz, 16Gb DDR3 1600, 500Gb SSD and GTX 1060 GPU. Or upgrade to a 2nd hand GTX1070 for around £380 total. (£170 budget for GTX1070)
@TheGameBench5 жыл бұрын
Okay... here we go.You have one compromise going with the 7020/9020 vs. like four with the 7010/9010. With the xx10 series, as I already clearly pointed out, the SATA ports and USB 3 port will block the installation of any GPU over 8.5 inches. There are ways around this such as low profile SATA cables or 90° SATA cables, and with the 90° SATA cables you're only going to get to use two of those SATA ports. To keep use of the front panel USB you will need a low profile USB 3 connector/cable. The next compromise is the power supply, as I already pointed out, is a lower wattage PSU. I know it's only a 15 watt difference. However, that 15 watts is the difference in being comfortable running an RX 480 and having to replace the power supply. Last is the Ivy Bridge CPU. Now, I can only speak to my area, the U.S. for prices, but the xx10 series cost about the same as the xx20 series, and the Ivy Bridge i5 is too long in the tooth for me to recommend, especially at a similar cost, along with all the other compromises. All that being said, the 7020 and 9020 have one, the 8-pin ATX main power connection. Well, you buy a single adapter to go from the 8-pin to the 24-pin for $12 and problem solved. It's honestly a moot point and you'll spend more on all the cables to make the xx10 series work, and potentially replacing the power supply when you wouldn't have had to with the xx20 series, and you'd have a "marginally" faster CPU. The only way I would recommend the xx10 series is of someone finds a good deal on one with the 3770. If we're talking budget system, I pay $100 for these 9020's with 4590's all the time with 8GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD. Then I get an 250GB Evo 840/850/860 for about $20-$30. Ex-miner RX480 for $55. SATA to PCIe cable for $3.50. Toss in a fan for $9 and I've spent just under $190 to build one of these systems. I can add another 8GB for about $12.50. All this being said, my point still stands. The xx10 series is more of a compromise than the 7020/9020.

I went a step up, looking for workstations and ended up with a Dell T3610 w/ xeon 1620 v2, K5000 & 685W PSU and HP Z420 w/ 1650 v2, RX480 & 600W PSU. These were bought for around 225/ea shipped after tax but I was able to sell the K5000 and RX480 cards that came with them, to get each computer about 100$ cheaper net. The Xeons shred and there is no concern about powering a real gaming card from the workstation builds. Each system has cables available for ~15$ to get proper 8+8 power, plus the dirt cheap ECC ram is an upgrade path. The HPs even have a chance of coming with a stock watercooler on the CPU, ram cooling fan+shroud, etc. These game very comparably to a modern build using an R5 2600 w/ matching GPU but for a little more than cost of the newer processor. If youre patient with your purchasing, you can find an RTX 2060 for ~250 or less on ebay and get a workstation for ~150-200. If youre timing is great, the workstation may have a Quadro card installed to sell to lower the cost further. Either way, youll be gaming very nicely for console money.

just had to pause the video right in the middle to comment what has been said countless of times already but idc :D it's easy to follow for the most part while not being oversimplified (or literally leaving out crucial information like other youtubers do) and for once i'm actually understanding a bit of what is said even as someone who is COMPLETELY clueless about PCs and never has built one before lmao. great content

I picked up a 9020 about a year ago with an i7 4790, 16gb ram, 128 SSD, 1TB HHD, and a Radeon R7 250 all for the extraordinary price of $50. I'm going to put a GTX 1650 in it to see what results it gives me.
@TheGameBench4 жыл бұрын
Should perform as well as the 1650 can. It will certainly be your limiting factor there.

Sff: replace the PSU with smaller higher watt unit. More power, more space for GPU, board sata power no longer an issue, use the PSU sata power. Also, use a 5.25 bay adapter that includes a slim DVD and two 2.5 drives. Worked great for me.

Are you talking about adding an SFX PSU in place of the propietary PSU in the SSF units? I had planned to mess with this by mounting it on the side of the chassis as I didn't think it would fit in the case. However, unless you're cutting out the side panel, any LP GPU isn't going to have a problem running off the stock PSU.

I bought a 3010 for $100, with a 1050gtx mini for $100. It came with i5, 8gb of ram and windows 10 pro. I am planning to do some modifications as well running some games through a projector

I just recently bought a i7-6700 7040 sff optiplex and see I'm limited on what I can do. I'm just gonna upgrade the ram, NVMe m.2, it has a 500gb hdd which I might do a sata sdd and gonna probably go with the gt 1030 low profile because of the limited power supply. I plan on getting a z1 or z2 motherboard and another case and PSU and swap everything over. I picked mine up locally off of ebay for $70 bucks.

I am new to pc gaming been a console guy all my life however for £120 and an extra £50 quid I purchased an optiplex with i3 and 8gb ram and a nvidea 710 graphics card and as extras bought a gaming keyboard and mouse from company called scan, it currently plays all my fps games flawlessly and games within a 5 year time frame eg/batman arkham series witcher 3 and so forth aswel as old faves like doom duke nukem red alert etc. I think was bargain but as say I'm a newbie to all this lol

I do agree with not bothering with small desktops if your gaming, I have a CIT case that is quite slim but when I'm gaming I need to manually set my CPU fan to 85%, my GPU fan to 95% and my front intake to 100% with the side panel off. It is annoyingly loud even through headphones. But I will say it is fairly quiet while web surfing and just general stuff.

Just got a 9020 with a 500gb samsung ssd, 16gb of 1600mhz ram, and a i5 4570 cpu for 100 euros! Planning to put a 1060 6 gig in it, and later upgrade the cpu to i7 4790 when i get the money for it. Perfect rig for 144hz 1080p e-sport gaming, and the whole thing will cost under 300 euros!
