I did want to add that I initially wanted to have a 580 in here, but considering the results, it wouldn't have really mattered and I know that there's no way you can run one on the 290 power supply anyways. So, what GPU are you planning to run in your OptiPlex build? Speaking of which, we've picked out the GPU so it time to get to the build.
@seriksson97215 жыл бұрын
Good question, as development is progressing all the time and I think gpu will be better in terms of performance and energy efficiency. I remember the performance of gpu from earlier that required almost 1000 watts psu. Personally, I think something slightly better than 1050 ti is enough, and if you get a little more performance for a little more money then .... I am happy to listen to your recommendations.

Yeah, that's what I've found with HP. You leave a lot more to chance. I've seen some that won't even supply 75 watts to the PCIe connector so you can't even add a decent GPU. Though, I thought it might be fun to do a comparison between these OptiPlex's and the ProDesk 600/800 systems.

Depending on how strong the GPU is, the power supply may need to be replaced, because the default one cannot take all the force the GPU brings in it. A gold certified power supply would be recommended if any GPU were to take cover for the upgrade.
@TheGameBench5 ай бұрын
Absolutely. There are a lot of GPU's the stock power supply shouldn't really be paired with. That being said, power consumption is rather simple, yet one of the most misunderstood concepts in gaming PC's. Also, saying that people should just get an 80+ gold rated power supply is terrible advice as it has nothing to do with the quality of a power supply, it's ability to handle the amount of power it is advertised for, if it has any protections built in... if they even work, etc. There are plenty of garbage 80+ gold rated power supplies on the market. The 80+ rating should be rather low on your priority list when buying a power supply and there are FAR more important aspects to focus on.

Only issue was the 240W PSU and the fact that the case was too small to fit the new 600W EVGA PSU ($38.01) and MSI GTX 760 (friend gave it to me for only $7 shipping) that I got for it. So I ordered a new mid ATX case ($37.91) that'll becoming in soon to fit in all the new upgrades. All in all the total cost came up to $222.92 then with the Dell monitor ($16.99) and Dell speakers ($24.52) I found it goes to $264.43. Having lots of fun building this and I can't wait for the case to come in so I can finally finish the build which I feel overall was low cost for what I got. After I upgraded to an i5 8400 with the same 1060, the stutterings are completely gone with a higher average fps. I think games are starting to use 6 or more cores in order to run buttery smooth. The prebuilt desktop I purchased was the Refurbished Acer Aspire TC-865 along with a 500-watt Evga PSU and an additional 8gb of Ram which totaled up to 430 USD + my $150 gtx 1060 6gb= 580 USD. Yeah, it's crazy how many people have gotten upset about my comments about the 2ng gen i5 in my buyers guide video. Like it was a personal attack or something. Quite a few people have even argued with me about it in the comments section. I actually bought a 990 with an i5 2500 that I'm going to do a video on and I found that which thew average frame rate wasn't all that different, the 1% and .1% lows were. I think most people still don't get why they're more important and your comment about six cores is spot on. Newer games are just using more and more cores which is why the i7's, even the 2nd gen, are still relevant while the older i5's are really not aging as well. You've got a pretty solid system there and with 16GB of DDR4 and a decent PSU, I'd say that $430 wasn't a bad price at all.

Thanks! I appreciate it. You don't need to upgrade the power supply depending on the GPU you're going to go with. On the nVidia side, you can go with the 1050, 1050 Ti, 1650, 1650 Super, 1060 3GB/6GB, 1660, 1660 Super and the 1660 Ti. The AMD side is a bit more limiting as Polaris is pretty power hungry. So, you're really looking at the 460/560. There are some 470s and 570s that will work that are closer to the reference clocks, but the only one I've tested that I can absolutely suggest, is the Asus Strix RX 470 non-OC. The 5500XT might be an option as well, but I've not been able to get one in for power testing. You'll just need a SATA to PCIe 8-pin adapter for the RX460/560 and all the nVidia cards up to the 1060 3GB, which I've linked in the description. If you want to go with the RX470 Strix or 1060 6GB and up, on the nVidia side, you'll want to use a dual SATA to PCIe 8-pin adapter as those cards will potentially use more than the 54 watt limit from a single SATA power connection. If you really want to, you can replace the power supply, but I really only suggest it if you're going with a higher end 470/570 or an RX 480/580. If you're gaming at 1080p, the 580, 1060 6GB, 5500XT and 1660 are pretty much the best cards I'd pair with the 4th gen i5. If you're gaming at 1440p, the 1070 and the 1080 makes sense, but I would suggest the 1660 Super or 1660 Ti over the 1070 as you're getting similar, or better, performance, but it can run on the stock power supply. Sorry for the long response... but as you can tell, I need to make an updated video.

Great content. It looks like you are testing these graphic cards on the system you removed the hard drive cage. If that is the case you may want to make it clear at the beginning of the video and/or description in case people jump to this video without seeing your previous ones. They may think any video card would fit. I know I had a hard time finding out what length card would fit on a base model Optiplex. Which card would you recommend for a case that has not been modded? Nope, that wasn't the system I used in the video to remove the HDD cage. That system is still in parts in my workroom for the build video. You're not bothering me. I'm happy to help. Sorry for commenting on an old video.. hope your channel is still going strong. I'm hoping to use a SATA to PCIe 6-Pin to power a 1060 6GB on an optiplex 9010 which has a 275W gold PSU. The SATA cable can take 54W apparently, and it's also attached to my Boot SSD which i've read don't draw more than 4W. The only other choices to share a SATA chain with was the optical drive or the hard drive, which i've read can both draw 10W+, so i went with the high-risk high reward option (i hope) of the boot SSD. The thing that worries me is that the two +12V rails draw 10A and 17A respectively, but only output 240W combined.. a i7-3770, 4x 8GB DDR3, 1060 6GB, optical drive, hard drive, SSD, CPU cooler, exhaust fan, motherboard... what chances do you think the PSU and adapter cable have? @@rdooski Sorry. I thought I had responded to you. You're on the right track that it would help distribute the amperage. I would say that really only will matter if you're dealing with really thin conductors on the adapter. Stock you have four SATA connectors in these, so you'd have to add one, or not connect the optical drive. Really though, as long as you have a decent one, you should need that much amperage. I have been going back and forth as to what to order, This video has been alot of help, but it looks like prices have shifted. I would really like to cap the cost of a card to $120 and right now the GTX 1060 all look like they are north of $150. I believe I read at one point (from a comment here, made by you) I could run the RX 480 on the stock power supply, But in the video you state its really a bad idea. Buying a new power supply isn't out of the question either, but would rather allocate that additional funds to a new monitor.
@TheGameBench5 жыл бұрын
If I said 480, then it was a typo. You definitely shouldn't off the stock PSU. The 570 might be fine, but it's really cutting it close. I've been seeing that with the 1060 as well. It's been that way for a while and you really have to be patient to get one closer to $120. People are nuts to spend $150 on one. At that price, a brand new 1650 Super makes more sense. If you can find an ex-miner 480 or 570 for around $60, that will give $60, give or take, for a good PSU and the adapter.

@@IqbalAhmadNazrawi321 Ah, I guess I missed that. No, a 320 watt isn't enough for a 1070. If you want to go with the 1070, I'd consider going with around 400 watt minimum. It'd be fine for a 1060 6GB... if that is a continuous rating and depending on how much wattage it provides on the 12v rails. Either way, I don't know if you're in the U.S. but I get them off eBay and I'm paying around $220 for a 1070. 1060 6GB models are all over the place. Great video! Thanks! Question regarding the SATA to PCI-E 6 pin power adapter: On the Optiplex 9020, all peripheral power cables come from the motherboard, the PSU only has cables powering the CPU 4 pin and the motherboard 8 pin power connectors. When you power the card with the SATA connections using the adapter, you are effectively pulling all the system power usage through the mainboard, not directly from the PSU. Shouldn't that be a concern due to overheating or reduced motherboard lifespan expectancy?
@TheGameBench4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! All the power comes from the power supply. The SATA power is merely being re-directed through the motherboard. A single SATA power connection is rated for 54 watts. So, as long as you're not asking too much of the adapter, it will be fine. There's no risk of over heating the motherboard or damaging it. With the 1060 6GB you'll consume 75 watts from the PCIe slot and about 45 watts from the single SATA power connection. The entire circuit... even more. I even measured temps in the adapter, as well as the SATA cable from the motherboard. Other cards besides the 1060 6GB that will work are the RX 470, 5500 XT, 1060 3GB, 1650 Super, 1660, and 1660 Super. Anything more than these should not be used with the adapter.

When I started doing this I had bought one that actually shorted out. I was lucky it didn't kill the GPU. Oh, and I should say that these aren't the best idea for slightly older cards like the 700 series from nVidia or 7000 series from AMD because they draw a TON of juice. The nVidia 10 series card are actually really efficient. That's why you see 1080's that are running off a single 8-pin.

Great video. May I ask what is the max length GPU that can fit into a 7010/9010 MT case? Would there be issues with hitting the SATA/ USB ports and/or wires near the end of the mobo? For instance, could a ASUS DUAL GTX 1660 EVO fit? Did you have to move any wires to fit any of the GPUs tested? Thanks.
@TheGameBench4 жыл бұрын
Depends.... if you want to keep the HDD cage, it's possible to shoehorn cards up to 10 inches/254mm in length. Might have to go down to 9.5 inches/241mm to make it fit. If you remove the HDD cage, well, I can't think of a GPU too long to fit. I tested out a 1080 Ti FTW3 and it fit. So, the Asus Dual 1660 Evo is about 9.5 inches, so it will fit without removing the HDD cage. However, anything over about 8.5 inches will run into the SATA ports. At 9.5 inches, you might not have to worry about the USB3 port, but you will most likely block all of the SATA ports. I did a recent community post showing how to deal with that. It also has links to all the cables you'd need to deal with it.

@@TheGameBench Thanks - I don't see the community post showing the cables. Can you link it? I'd prefer not to remove the HDD cage, so I prefer to re-route all the cables/plugs around the SATA/USB ports, if possible.

Nice mix of computer and DIY knowledge👏. Thanks a lot. I may buy an optiplex 3060, i5 8500, would it be a good choice? And would the motherboard accept a 9th generation processor? Tried to search on any bios updates on Dell's website, but they mentioned nothing about that. Thanks again!

I wouldn't suggest the 3060. Sorry I'm late responding, but it's only got a 260 watt power supply, and it's not standard ATX. I wouldn't be nearly as simple to turn it into a gaming system.

@@TheGameBench Thanks a lot for your responce. I was going to change the power supply anyway, Increase the ram, and add a graphics card. But it may in the end cost me more.

@@amroosama600 That's where I was at when I considered doing some similar work on them. If you do, you can use an SFX PSU in there. It will be kinda' jank, but it will fit. Also, look into flex ATX power supplies. They might drop right in, and might not, but the'll also fit.

I just removed it and painted it. Thought it makes them look a lot less dated.
