I just returned a 7670 (12950HX) because Dell seriously limits the power to the laptop and the real-time performance was very poor. For example, as shown in this video the CBR23 scores are not very good - the Lenovo, ASUS and MSI all do 20,000 or more. 13,000 - 14,000 is more in line with 11th gen i7. I measured power draw at the wall on mine and it was steady at 130 W, presumably because the laptop was already getting extremely hot and Dell is concerned about causing burns. There’s no way that laptop can pull anywhere close to the ~200 W that you need to really get good numbers. Presumably the Lenovo, ASUS and MSI have significantly better cooling. Also, the real-time performance on the 7670 was terrible. Minimum latency in a digital audio workstation was 6.7 ms on my Dell 7530 vs 24 ms on my 7670. So I returned my 7670 and will be holding on to my 7530 until Dell hires some better thermal engineers. Maybe they can hire ones from Lenovo, ASUS or MSI. Also, the spec sheet for the 7670 when I ordered mine said all versions of that laptop have three NVMe slots. The ones with the 84 Wh battery do not.

I had two Precision 7670's and BOTH were running hot! Now they want to replace the fan! They sent me this system as a replacement for my Precision 7520 that had a swollen battery. I still had an extended warranty and Dell chose this system for me. I did have a hand in the configuration, but it's a serious hazard! I'm waiting to see what happens next! The first and 2nd Precision 7670 were running hot!

Did you have any heat issues? I have the i7 with 16 gigs of ram. It's a replacement for my Dell Precision 7520, and that had 16 gigs of ram, so could not get more! I had two 7670's here and both are running VERY HOT!

Just caught the replay on the Dell Precision 7670 and what a Powerhouse it is Andrew!! Dell seems to be using the latest in technology with that CAMM memory module which is great to see. The 2 SSD's in RAID configuration, the battery and the Awesome 1080p Webcam. These laptops are ready for the future. Thank you Andrew for your livestreams which are Always Fantastic my friend. 👍😁

I realise the barrel power connector is required for the max power but is there any option to power it with USBC at reduced performance so you could have basic performance should the power supply fail?

OK finally got to watch this in full. Gotta say I LOVE these laptops and thank you again Andrew for the detailed unboxing review! While I have decided to stick to ultrabooks for my new laptops for now rather than gaming/performance laptops, this is one of the few performances laptops that could really sway me if I could afford the price. Normally I'd worry about weight, being bulky, fan noise, etc, in these types of devices but like you mentioned these laptops do really good in these regards for the performance that they have! Combine it with the great professional keyboard design with full numpad, optional 5G, INSANE SSD speeds, great camera and various other little things which makes it one of the best laptops of 2022 as long as you can afford it imo! Though the most important feature after all is the new CAMM ram module which is really interesting to me and renews my hopes for Dell as one of the best laptop manufacturers! IF I could buy it though, I'd definitely prefer having an IPS matte 1600p option, this would probably be the only "negative" I can think of.

Great review, and those numbers are really good. An important point for those asking for thinner computers with similar performance, in my experience thermo throttling and steadily worsening performance is an issue. I never experience this with my privately owned dell 7750 i7 10th gen with 32GB RAM and 2x1 TB SSD. Our company opted for a Lenovo t14s i7 10th gen, with great specs that matches the 7750, that in Crystal Diskmark performed the same. But the throtteling and ssd performance on the thinner Lenovo is terrible after some hours use. The Dell 7750 may perform at full capasity for hours, but the Lenovo performance slowly fades. An example is compiling code. The dell compiles in 45-60 minutes every single time, 24/7 365 days a year. The Lenovo, after some hours runtime, needs 2x time. Unzipping, the Dell 7750 spends 2 min 45 sec every single time on a 12 GB file. The Lenovo slowly turns it into a 10 minute job. A reboot temporary makes the Lenovo fast for a couple of hours, but then it slowly turns into a 🐌. My guess is, the thick bodied 7670 i9 has the best thermo and the best performance over time.

FYI: A very recent BIOS + Lenovo Vantage sw update solved the issue of the Lenovo t14s "slowly turning into a snail" issue. The previous version harshly bottlenecked the CPU performance over time. Finally, after 1 1/2 year, it seems to be working consistently. They are not very fast with the BIOS updates. Dell just recently released the BIOS 1.8 version to solve the overheating issue on top-spec 7670 & 7770 Precisions. The BIOS update reportedly lessened direct voltage to the CPU. Seems like they should rethink their thermal solutions for the current & next intel generation - perhaps implement some ideas from the XPS 13 Plus chassis. Those 150w++ CPUs & GPUs draw more power than the current 240W power supplies and need way more cooling.

Great video Andrew! Im all in for thick and heavy when i ask for that kind of super power. People who ask for that kind of cpu and gpu in 1 inch thick and 1 pound light body need to realize they are a bit crazy in the brain :) Companies who put these 16/24 cores cpu in thin and light simply dont care if their product will work correctly. Correctly means no heat problems and no 100db noise level

Thank you for this and nicely done! Very interested to see a Lenovo P16 comparsion to these. Looking to purchase to upgrade from P15 Gen1 and it seems the P16 handles thermals a little better with R23 reporting 16500-16900mc. I do like many parts of the Dell offering better. Big one being the RJ45 port. Tough decision.

The Dell Precision 7670 is a poorly designed system. I got two replacements. BOTH are RUNNING HOT. We updated the bios, drivers, Windows 10 Pro, adjusted settings to run cool and NONE of it helped. - Now on the 2nd system the fan keeps running. They want to replace the fan on an 11-day-old system. - After running an hour with no real activity the keyboard was hot, the underneath was hot, the charger was hot and even the top cover was hot! I was on the phone with Dell Pro Support and he agreed this is not supposed to happen! The only reason I will allow them to do it is because I want the tech to experience the heat coming from the system! In all the computers I have owned, I have NEVER experienced anything like this. I unplugged the system as I am afraid it will catch on fire, besides it's uncomfortable with all the heat! [It's odd that two systems should run identical right out of the box! ~Roz Fruchtman aka @RozSpirations
