As an LG UltraFine owner, I really appreciate using the USB type-c connector for my MacBook Pro. Charges just fine as expected, but being able to plug in a USB Logitech webcam on the display, and have that automatically be connected to my MacBook is pretty slick. When I'm mobile I use the built in camera, but when attached to the display, again with USB type C, you instantly get these other peripherals connected (and powered). Pretty nice feature for a single cable to my MacBook Pro.

thanks for the video Ben, it's is what I wanted to know, but there are some other things to mention, for example in terms of price for the LG, there are some slight deference in between the Ultra-fine, based on my research, the ones that have 90 or 96W output delivery will be more expensive than the 60W, the good thing about the Dell is that uses the normal power cord, no adapter needed, VS the LG that uses the adapter which if it was damaged then it will be like $100 to buy a new one tho, also LG iguess has a split screen between the 2 HDMIs? like if you wanted to display to screens in one,

I had the Dell 2720q and replaced it with the 32" LG UltraFine when I switched jobs. I think the picture quality is comparable with both. The swivel arm on the LG is a big benefit and the 90 watt USBC charge is a benefit for the Dell. It's important to note that with the Dell, you can only choose high speed USB 3.1 OR 60Hz refresh rate, not both. That was a big downside to the Dell.
@b3naqua3 жыл бұрын
Good info! Yeah, I noticed the USB rates go down to 2.0 when on 60hz, which sucks. I think the same thing happens on the LG 27 inch, too, when using the M1 via usb-c. On your 32 inch LG, do the USB-A ports retain their faster speeds when using usb-c?
@dcallan13 жыл бұрын
@@b3naqua Good question. I haven't tried. I switched to a higher wattage notebook XPS15 that required a docking station. Now that I know the LG does the same, I presume the limitation is a result of the bandwidth of the port.
@blkspade232 жыл бұрын
They are similar because practically every popular IPS monitor on the market is an LG display. Dell's ultrasharps have been built around LG panels practically forever. Same goes for Apple displays. Since the Dell mentions DCI-P3, its probably based on the newer panel LG uses in the 27UP850.

How is HDR on the LG? I don't mean the "HDR Effect" image mode which is merely a filter added on top of the image. I mean when you output HDR10 video signal to it, how is it? I had the predecessor of this monitor (27UP850N) and when I outputted HDR signal to it from my computer it always started being very magenta and completely fricked up the colours. When i'd switch back to SDR signal the colour would revert to normal. This made it unusable for HDR even though it had VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification. Does this problem exist on this monitor too?

@@b3naqua I have a 2nd monitor with DVI, an Apple Cinema HD and until I got it on the enduser Beta RC2 version of BS11.2 a couple days ago, I was unable to use Apple's HDMI-DVI adapter; I had to use a 2nd party USB-C to DVI adapter. That killed 1 of 2 USB-ports. As I have the 8/256gb version, I needed an external USB-C SDD for my 200 gb of photos as I found it took up to 47 seconds to open the photos app via my external USB-A HDD so I got a Sandisk Extreme E61 HDD which took the opening of the photos app down to 3 seconds but that killed the 2nd USB-C port which meant the Dell U2720qm monitor had to be connected via HDMI and I couldn't use the downstream hub built into the Dell monitor; thus I haven't had much experience using that hub. I did try to connect the SDD via the hub but speeds close to halved on the SDD so gave up on that and started looking for a good Thunderbolt dock to get more ports but found they cost a fortune. The issue is now under control with BS11.2 as I have regained the port using HDMI-DVI to the Apple Display and USB-C to the Dell and the spare port for the SDD so now I can use the Dell hub but so far so good.

@@NavarroOne thanks for the update! I've noticed really slow read/write speeds on my external SSD (ravpower portable 1TB) using the Dell as a hub, but the same thing happens when using the LG monitor. I was getting like 35mbps on the 500mbps SSD on the Dell, which sucks. Not sure what causes this, but it seems like when using the main usb-c port for the Mac, the monitor reverts the usb-a 3.0 ports to usb 2.0 speeds?

@@b3naqua I get 820/670 MB/s from my Sandisk Extreme Pro (E61) according to 'Blackmagic' when connected direct to my Mac; this is nominally a 1.050 MB/s drive. When connected to the Dell hub, I get 350/310 MB/s so there is clearly a delta between the ports; however the slow speeds you are getting ((I don't know the raw power but I assume it is nominally a 550 MB/s like the older Sandisk Extreme Pro (E60) is probably down to your menu choice on the Dell. You can choose "Display -> USB-C Prioritization -> high data speed which is 3.0 and if you choose High resolution it is 2.0. You have to shut down the computer, activate the input source menu on the Dell, press and hold the CHECKMARK key on USB Type-C input for 8 seconds to actually change the mode. by the way, anyone reading this who have the Sandisk Extreme Pro (E81) with nominal speeds of 2.000 MB/s and the Dell U2720q monitor, I would be very interested to hear if you get higher speeds than the 350 or so I am seeing

The UL is a slightly updated version that came out a year after the UK. The specs and design are similar, but the UL has DisplayPort 1.4 and DisplayHDR.

For some odd reason after plugging my monitor up to my new mac mini m1 when using usb-c connectivity with this monitor my connection is reading at 2760p 30 bit usb 2.0. watching other reviews I'm noting that other's are getting a 3.1 or 3.0 signal if that makes sense upon connectivity. I've used the original usb-c that came with this monitor and I've used an apple usb-c both connect at 2760p 30bit usb 2.0 should I be worried?
@b3naqua3 жыл бұрын
In the monitor settings, go to Display > usb-c prioritization > try selecting high resolution, then try high data speed and see what kind of results you get with usb data speeds. I think it may be a limitation on the monitor that when high resolution is selected, you get 4K 60hz, but the USB ports go down to 2.0, which is annoying. I usually use the high resolution mode for the faster refresh rates.

I connect the type c cable provided by 2019 Mbp 16" running catalina 10.15.7 to Dell U2720D. It cannot detect. But using the original 1m cable by Dell it is working. Which brand of type c are you using and I looking for a 2m as 1m is too short for my setup with monitor arm.

I hear a lot of complaints about scaling. Would I be better off to buy a 27 inch 2K unit or a 24 inch 4K unit? For MacBook Pro 16 M1
@sravans1492 жыл бұрын
From what I’ve heard , 5k 27 or 1440 p 27 are best cuz 1440 is native for mac and 5k is a 2x upscale . I’m planning on getting a 32 or 27 inch 4K soon cuz 24 inch 4K is quite small for a UHD panel with not too many high quality options . I’ve tried pairing my mbp with a 4K 55 inch tv and it’s not too bad

Good Q. It happened again to me last night while I was editing this video. I saw a forum thread about this exact issue happening w this monitor for other people, so it’s a known issue. I wonder if M1 has anything to do w it?

@@b3naqua It was exactly the MAIN reason why i returned my dell ultrasharp u3219q. I bought it beacuse it had usbc 90w. But in the end it never worked correctly with M1 Mac mini, it works only if i unpluged usbce once. Though Hdmi worked fine. There must be some kind of war between Apple and Dell. Neither wanna fix this issue and blame each other. I went with LG NG950. The only “issue” i have with that is the fan noise. I dont game and M1 Mini is silent. So maybe there is return again hahaha.
