This video perfectly shows my main BIG problem with this monitor (and some other decisions apple made in the last years). Everything that stands out as particularly "great/good" are things that don't actually matter for the monitor as a monitor. Build quality, feel, a build in UI with a good chip, good speakers... all nice, but everything that matters for the actual product as a MONITOR is just not good enough for the price (and the add-on prices) Apple is asking for. Yes it feels good, but i almost never touch my monitor, yes it sounds good, but for a desktop i always use external speakers or headphones, yes it's well made (except the cable), but i never had a monitor breaking because it's plastic... what i actually want in a high standard productivity monitor is amazing peak brightness, a higher refresh rate for more pleasant reading and scrolling (let's be honest, gaming is not what apple is focussing on), an amazing panel with accurate colors and close to the best blacks and maybe some comfort features like tilt, swivel, height adjust and rotation if you don't put it on an arm... and none of that is what this monitor stands out for. It honestly feels like Apple spend tons of time and money to develope a shiny new product with lots of features, but failed to develope the core feature set to a point that actually feels well done. It's like a bog standard monitor with with some Apple-Glitter slapped on it.

Bazels are something I might add. To bis for these days, and the hole display is do much, because of all the features I don’t wont. iPhone 11 had a small footprint, for being a phone, better cameras and a okay-ish speaker. @@calebjankola8728 Great how you managed to completely misinterprete my comment... congratulations. I never said, and never will say that build quality isn't important. It definetly is, very much so. But this is not "better quality", it's more material waste without any other purpose than to "look good". It's a "good-enough" monitor for money you pay for a "very good" one, because it's shiny and cool. There are tons of monitors with less features and "worse" materials, which still have amazing lifespans, don't break, have replaceable stands and cables AND are much better monitors... and without a mediocre webcam, storage and a chip, a fixed cable and "good-enough" speakers that will end in a landfill once the monitor is dead. This has been my fundamental problem with Apple's design philosophy through the dark ages (butterfly keyboard era). They're intentionally choosing to under-design a product that _could_ be insanely competitive despite the fact that they'd still be able to line their pockets if they just made something better. Every power user is just going to be resentful of the limitations here despite them being the very demographic they're targeting. They finally made Macbook Pros a legitimately compelling product again, and this feels like a huge step backwards. How are they selling an _entire_ Macbook Pro with better screen tech for $2k and then turning around and selling this monitor for $1600? Their pricing/spec philosophy is conflicting with itself. Sure, it's a "nice" monitor overall, but the design decisions to get it here are clearly shady and minimally competitive. Ultimately, I hope this product fails so that Apple does better next time. $400 for a few inches of height adjustment? Get the absolute fuck outta here. Just _make a great monitor_ and charge the typical Apple price for it.
@Natsukashii11112 жыл бұрын
Issue is that they got halo product that are there to make lot of money, like the mentioned MacBook. Then they got this display that they know will not sell a lot and is just there to say that it exist, that use repurposed components from their others device. Like the 1000$ stand or wheels, this is a design statement and if some dumb rich minimalist buy it then that's an added bonus. We are there comparing price, they are just waiting for that one guy that only know one store, the apple store.

@Male Sensitivity the entire M1 lineup (at least the M1 macbook air and pro) have all been shockingly good value, or at least worth their price if used to their extent. This monitor simply does not meet expectations for a studio monitor in 2022 as Marques states. It fails to produce a display beyond the basics (60hz LCD IPS) excluding its 5k resolution.
@smagliaro2 жыл бұрын
@Male Sensitivity The stand(s) and power cable are blatant shortcomings that very clearly have profit-driven motives behind their design. They're 100% anti-consumer and sacrifice actual usability/flexibility in favor of predatory pricing and repair practices. You could argue that for almost any of their products to some degree, but the last few years have generally been an upswing for the value of their lineup. The new MBPs and iPad Air have been actual showstoppers, which makes this monitor feel that much more egregious by comparison.

Yeah Apple has a serious problem beliving it is a Botique design company. When it is a tech company that focues on making tech for non tech people. After 1 year of owning two of these displays, I have to say they are the best displays I ever owned. In our office I am the only one with this display, others all have an HP panorama display that‘s about as expensive. Funny thing: Whenever I‘m in my HomeOffice my colleagues use my Apple display instead of their larger HP. I don’t know wether it’s because of the higher resolution (despite being smaller) or the better colors or the uniform lighting without light speckles or the joy of using a display that doesn’t wiggle whenever you touch the table. A solid aluminum display with an excellent screen seems to be worth something.

But HP's panoramic display is, you know, a panoramic display, it's an ultra-wide monitor, and Apple's one is not. And if you really have problems with monitor stability, you can try using a desk/wall mount, it will cost less than $400 and will allow you a wider range of position adjustment.

I suspect the real reason they didn't want to make it better is because then it will be pretty much an affordable version of their XDR display. And they really thought that adding an extra processor and nice speakers would make up for the price, but we don't care about any of that lol.

I would LOVE to hear Apple explain why they made the power cord not removable... Like i get the stand, its profit motivated but the power cable is just bad for everyone. Its annoying for apple to have to store/protect massive monitors waiting to be fixed because its not just a standard part and having to make and produce that stupid "tool", its bad for studios because now its more expensive and has more down time, genuinely who wins? I understand that apple is super greedy and will spin anything into a positive for the brand but they have been making some great products since switching to their own silicon and this EASILY could have been one, it could have used the A15 for Airdrop when your mac isn't on, apple tv apps, hell with 64gb of storage it could have been a digital photo frame while you aren't using the computer... I need to know what their reasoning was... I can't think of anything other than just because "we were on a hot streak and we thought we should ruin that"...

They are looking to test subscription service *JUST* to use the device you own, if you don't pay subscription, they brick your IPhone or Imac or whatever in the future and you have to send it all back in to Apple store to fix it or not. Sorry, but not sorry, only **RETARDS** keep buying Apple, period. The more people enable Apple, the more they'll get screwed over.

Alright, so let me get this straight. Apple took an iMac 27", ripped out all the PC hardware, and sells that for roughly the same price. Yeah, this may be the only monitor for its very specific usecase, but lets not pretend your not getting screwed over here. This isn't a monitor that's worth $1600. Very valid points, but panels aren't the defining parts of the image quality. They play a big role, sure but not everything. It’s going to take a year and I’m committed to doing so. Phones, computers, displays, watch - I’m going away from Apple. - The undetachable power cord is an atrocity. Apple already had a solution in the color matched cable of iMac, which is a beautiful attention to style. Instead Apple lost on both architecture and function. - Not being able to change the stand. Paid or not. Is nothing short of spitting on us customers. I realized it is not rain. - Not being able to rotate by 90 degrees. I think that Apple lost significant revenue with this decision. How nice it would be to have an XDR in the middle, and two Studio displays… - Having only one Thunderbolt port = no daisy chain (hey Apple, I was willing to buy a few of those displays). These design decisions makes me feel for the first time that I will be satisfied only if the Apple product manager will be politely asked to go and work for another company.

My expectation is that the monitor will provide seamless integration with current Apple hardware and future equipment, too. I use this display in tandem with an M1 24" iMac, resulting in a nice dual-monitor setup. The monitor is never turned off and simply works day after day. @schrodingerscat18632 жыл бұрын
@@chateuaxfaygeaux Very few companies are making 5K panels and those that do have to charge a premium because there isn't that much of a market for them so they don't get the volume sales to bring the price down. Personally I think Apple missed the point on this display, it is supposed to be a studio display meaning those that need it will spend a lot of money for something truly outstanding. They went with an old panel in a shiny new box with a fixed power cord. So if you are using it for show, like in a marketing setting the power cord is a problem and so is the age and spec of the panel, if you are using it in a studio there are better options with better panels at a higher price. They could have pushed the envelope going for new technology like micro led but they didn't. They could have included tvOS in there perfectly utilizing the A13 bionic chip and 64 gig of storage, which will be able to use tv apps like netflix and the like, just like how Samsung does it with their M7 smart monitor.

I'm surprised no reviewer I watched talked about the fact that if you want to use 2 or 3 of these together, like you can on the Mac Studio, you just pay for extra redundant 12mp web cams, speakers and A13 chips... and LLT showed these screens can't be daisy chained... I would have expected this monitor to have a screen only version that daisy chains via thunderbolt to the main one, even as a bundle or something. This monitor is a very strange combo of business decisions.

99% of editors will only use 1 27inch monitor. This Monitor was designed for the Mac Studio, it’s why they call it the Studio Display, and introduced it with the Mac Studio. Apple will be offering a “stripped” version of this monitor…just wait!!

It isnt strange at all. This is the idea with Apple they create a very specific package for each product. If you dont get exactly what you want. PAY UP $$$$$ And You are doing it wrong. Apple has said since the days of Jobs that users are supposed to be a part of the Apple "experience" and you will love it doing things their way. "this last comment was partially sarcastic, but I'm not even joking." This is seen as their entire ecosystem is designed to LOCK YOU INTO THEIR WALLED GARDEN. You are supposed to do things, change settings, and use the equipment exactly as they say so. Peon. XD

I’d like to add something to your completely correct thinking : if you can’t daisy chain it and you haven’t been spending the mac Studio money, because of having spend a lot on an MacBook Pro 14/16” already, you also paying a second 96W charger. ^^ - also bazels are pretty thick, when compared to e.g. U2720q - weird for a 2022 device.

In 2020 Apple pioneered Dolby Vision HDR on their cellphones which also featured OLED displays. In 2018 Apple released a 120hz HDR-capable display on the iPad Pro. But 4-years later, the new $2000 USD monitor can’t edit HDR videos…

Thanks, Marques, for the first honest review of this monitor that I've seen! I am a long-time user of Apple products, including my 2015 27" iMac, and this, at its current price, is definitely, as you said, "a swing and a miss."

The problem is that many reviewers say that 27" 4k displays don't work well with Mac because of "scaling" issues. That pretty much leaves the options of Apple or LG.

I appreciate how this videos title isn’t a total tease, made me feel respected enough in re to my time and attention to watch it the whole way through. Fine line to walk between that and not wanting to give away your lead entirely. Good job and Thanks.

7:59 Mac cameras have a really bad habit of constantly recalibrating the brightness - and I guess now the white balance as well, judging by this clip. I can immediately tell when I'm having a zoom call with a Mac user, because their camera constantly shifts brightness levels. It's super distracting. And I can't fathom how this is not fixed yet, for a company so focused on "image" and "perception" like Apple.

This is so upsetting. I have a great Mateview 4k display which was only $560 and was excited for a new affordable Apple display. But this price is an absolute joke for what is essentially an old LG panel in a different skin.

@@sys-administrator Yeah its hard to compare a 4k and 5k display. But the LG display he is talking about is 5K. This new Apple monitor is basically a 5 year old LG monitor with slightly better peak brightness, better build quality, probably a better webcam, better speakers. But the LG monitor includes a height adjustable stand that is user removeable, a removable power cable, and costs 400 dollars less than the base version of the Apple monitor. There is no reason to spend the money on the Apple monitor when the LG 5k exists.
