Grazie Hi I have an SSD with windows 10 installed that I use as an external drive that I carry around and when needed I can have my portable operating system. I wanted to know if it is possible to connect it to a wyse 3040 thin client with ThinOS 9.5.1079 bios 1.2.5 so that I can view windows. Thanks

brother, it's a great video, one question, do you know how to look for the charger adapter?
@qubitstech10 ай бұрын
Not sure I understand correctly, if you're referring to the USB type C adapter try searching for 'usb c laptop adapter' (just make sure to find a listing that lets you pick the right voltage) or something like 'dc usb c pd'. Once you find one, you should find a lot of similar listings. Hopefully that answers your question :)

I found one at 25usd and thinking to use it as firewall like "pi-hole", do you think is it possible since pi-hole needs ubuntu 20, 22 or 23? What version of ubuntu that dell uses? Thank you
@qubitstech Жыл бұрын
I'd say it's worth a shot, it's similar performance wise in my experience and that seems a good price. You can install any modern Ubuntu version on it, I have a couple with 22.04 LTS and one with 23.04.

I have about 3 of these units (luckily the 16gb versions). Tiny 10 and 11 do run on it ok, but you’re probably better off with a linux distro. You can supposedly add additional storage using the SDIO port port with an m.2 to MicroSD card converter. I don’t know about I/O speeds using this method, but it at least allows you to keep everything internal and save the limited emmc storage for the primary OS.
@qubitstech8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment, I haven't tried Tiny 10 or 11 yet but assumed Linux would probably be better. We have a video testing out the storage mod, To be honest, it's not really worth the hassle, it's not the most reliable mod. A USB drive is probably the better option if more storage is needed.

any reason to prefer this over the wyse 5070, which also has a very low power consumption (4,5W idle / 15W full load) ?
@qubitstech Жыл бұрын
The compact size is a big win for me, and performance is good enough. It's also cheaper (I've seen them go for around £20 recently). The 5070 is a good choice though - I've actually just ordered one myself.

Yes, you may run 3040 from your jeans pocket while 5070 can't fit the pocket

So it’s not possible to use the m.2 slot for storage (bummer) but is there any way the slot can be used other than a network card?
@qubitstech Жыл бұрын
In theory.....maybe. Though in reality, I don't know of anything other than wifi/BT cards that use SDIO. Anything that connects through SDIO should work, though the issues using a microSD card suggest it might not be following the standard fully. If you're looking for something with better storage options, the Wyse 5070 seems to have dropped in price, and it offers SATA through it's M.2 port. It's larger than the 3040, but it's got a better CPU and more RAM as well.
@riffdex Жыл бұрын
@@qubitstech yeah, I kind of regret buying the 3040 cause of its limitations. Sure it wasn’t a lot of money to waste but the internal memory is way too limiting. I won’t make that mistake again for next machine I buy.
@qubitstech Жыл бұрын
Since making the video, prices for alternatives have definitely dropped. If it's enough for what you need, it's great, but price and fanless operation are no longer the major benefits they once were. I'm tempted to make a new video looking at a few alternatives.

@@qubitstechI just got a Dell Wyse 5070 at the thrift store for $15. It actually has a M.2 (SATA only) slot . The 3040 is pretty useless, this new one I got will actually have some capabilities

Great video. I'm getting one of these soon, and I'm wondering what sort of stuff I can do with ThinOS. It would be great to see a video about this. I currently have a 3030 LT N06D which I'm running OpenBSD in on, console/text only.
@qubitstech11 ай бұрын
I don't think ThinOS can do a lot on its own, it's designed to run applications over a network. I might take a look at it at some point, see if I can do anything interesting with it.
@altar8406 ай бұрын
Put freebsd with ide , it will create the same level of load as thinos 9.x ( current official OS) for 3040. Run all the apps you like but take into the notion that 3040 has pretty small emmc which could suffer from the large and frequent rewrites
@DJIInLondon Жыл бұрын
Hi, I have decided to come back to the 3040 after a year away, The bios password can be removed by lifting the lid and holding the reset button down whilst turning the device on. The uefi locked bootloader holds these devices back, some bios allow non uefi boot, but they are very rare, If anybody has one they are able to run tiny 7 and solve any issue with uefi OS Also i was able to install windows 10 to the device using tiny 10 by ntdev Then disabling all services that took up drive space I then had to install all drivers and back them up using power shell ( the largest is the intel graphics driver ) Then i had to reinstall tiny 10 again and install the drivers once again with as lower footprint as possible leaving firefox, The use this time around is moonshine for remote gaming :) Any idea on the lightest linux distro to get moonshine running ? thanks
@qubitstech Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, only just saw your comment. Not familiar with moonshine, but I've had antiX running on it which is very lightweight. Not sure if it supports moonshine though. Good tip on the BIOS password, though I've never came across one that isn't using the default one. I've tried tiny11, might make a video on it in the future, though I did have issues with it. Linux is so much better on these machines.

Can we use m.2 slot for external lan card I want to use it as mikrotik router
@qubitstech7 ай бұрын
Honestly I doubt it, you'd need a LAN card which uses SDIO which I'm not sure exists. If it does, you'd struggle to get 100Mbit/s out of it. I'd say give the USB 3.0 port a go, or look at using something with more expansion ports (preferably with PCIe available). Hope this helps :)

I am planning to get one of these to make an emulation station. Do you think it is possible?
@qubitstech Жыл бұрын
Hi, it really depends what you plan to play on it. I'd say anything a Raspberry Pi can handle, this should be able to handle it too. If you can get one for a good price, it's worth a try.

Sorry for the late reply, only just saw this comment. That's essentially what thin clients are designed for, though you could use any PC as a client if you know how to set up the OS.

Im really eyeing one of these up thinking of running windows XP on it. Would it be somehow possible?
@qubitstech8 ай бұрын
Probably not. This only supports UEFI booting, while XP has no UEFI support. There might be ways around this, but it's not something I've ever tried. You're also likely to have issues finding drivers, though the basic Windows graphics driver might be enough to get a display output. Would be interesting to hear your experience if you decide to give it a go :)

You should test out windows 11 ghost spectre on it, maybe even the newer tiny 11 see if either work on them.

Interesting video! Just a quick note, you said the usb storage might be slower, but in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKSpdnZufJmGq7M there is a benchmark that shows that external SSD connected throught USB (3.0 probably) gives much better performance that built in eMMC memory, improving the benchmark score almost to the level of raspberry pi 4
@qubitstech Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comment. Geekbench isn't storage focused, so I wouldn't read too much into the Pi comparison in those benchmarks. You're right to say though that a good external drive could be faster, particularly an SSD with a good M.2 to USB converter. We were more thinking of USB thumb drives when we said that. I'm not sure the SSD route would be worth the cost unless you already have one lying around. If you're interested, I've added the link to the full benchmark breakdown to the video description.

Hi, it's essentially a mini fanless PC. You can use it for anything you'd use a normal PC for, though the performance is low. If it's the BIOS password you need, try Fireport as this is the default.

@@theKnowlerience Take a look at our article here to install an os: qubitsandbytes.co.uk/install-a-new-os-on-a-dell-wyse-3040. This is focused on Linux, but the initial steps are the same. You'll need to create a bootable Windows USB drive to install from. I'd suggest taking a look at Tiny10 or Tiny11 instead of a full Windows install due to the limited RAM/CPU performance. Keep in mind that Windows is too large to fit on the 3040's internal storage. You'll need a second USB drive (64GB+) which you'll install Windows to. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend it as performance will be very slow, similar a Raspberry Pi 4. We use ours as headless servers with Linux installed, which they're ideal for.
