I bought the 13 inch display with touch screen 16GB of RAM and 1 TB of SSD. Absolutely perfect weight, size portability, fits in the back pack live a glove! Best laptop I have ever owned. Slight heating issues when browsing through youtube videos. Outstanding battery life time. Bought the additional battery and thunderbolt adapter for HDMI use. I am ready for anything!

I have the XPS13 laptop and i absolutely love it. Initially, i wanted something portable and i was debating if i should get a tablet or a laptop. I ended choosing the XPS13. But now my needs changes, I need more screen real-estate to work. If only it had a bigger screen... Oh wait, they have the XPS15 model! It's in the mail, should be in next week. It's the regular HD screen but with the 84Whr, they advertise up to 17h of battery live but in real live condition i'd expect something closer to 12h, which is still head and shoulders above the competition, specially considering the size!

The XPS 15 is such a great looking machine. I'm currently using an Asus ZenBook UX303LN with a dual-core i5-4210U and a GeForce 840M and while the XPS 15 would give me much more power on hand for my work, I've probably got more pressing things to finance. Maybe at the end of this year I'll spoil myself a bit with the inevitable updated XPS 15 (Kaby Lake processor and Pascal graphics anyone?).

Of the 20 something reviews I've watched on the Dell XPS 15 9550, this one is my favourite. I love how in depth you go with it. I recently watched your ASUS Zenbook review and I wish you structured your review of the XPS 15 9550 like that in terms of thermals and assessing gaming performance. Would it be possible if you could create a video showcasing the gaming performance on the 4K XPS 15 since there's not enough information online? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!

Tyrelle Davenport It's great! I do a fair bit of video editing which it has no problem with and it's nice having that extra bit of storage. I think 500gb really isnt enough for me because of all of the video files/games i keep on it. The 32GB of RAM only really makes a difference over 16GB with video editing. Even then, it's a bit overkill. I'd only recommend this over the other model if you need the extra storage and/or edit a lot. Other than that, they will perform the same pretty much everywhere else. Overall it has been excellent. Very good performance and it looks great too.

I'm thinking about getting the 15 in the next month or so. As far as gaming, I was happy to see the framerate on D3 be so high. I mainly would be playing that but I do play more demanding games from time to time. Do you think the i5 is significant for my needs or would the i7 be significantly better/more future proof for medium gaming? I realize the dedicated graphics is the most important for that, but am not sure how much of a role the processor plays.

You didn't mention GPUs in the specs? The hell?
@MatthewMoniz
@MatthewMoniz 9 жыл бұрын
I did by accident. it will be on my full review of each laptop with a little more benchmarking. But for your reference, the Dell XPS 13-inch uses the on board Intel 520 chip. The XPS 15 has a dedicated Nvidia 960m but also uses the on board Intel 530 chip to power the display when it's not performing any intensive tasks in order to save battery life.

This video was very helpful! Im going off to college in a few months and am serious considering these but im still not sure whether or not the 15 will too inconveniently large... Any suggestions??
@elsieinthevoid
@elsieinthevoid 7 жыл бұрын
Cameron Been seriously considering these too. From what I hear, the 4.4 lb weight on the 15 isn't too bad to carry around, especially if you're keeping it in a case in a backpack to and from classes. So if you really like the bigger screen and the better specs, it'll probably be worth a tad bit extra weight that shouldn't be too bad.

Excellent review but I'm still undecided. I'm looking at both as refurbs so the price is about the same. Both i7, 16GB and 512SSD setups with 3k/4k screens. I understand the dual vs quad proc and lack of the 960 on the 13 but I won't game on it or do any heavy lifting (CAD, PS etc). Mostly media consumption and MS Office productivity tasks, but I'm coming off an older xps studio 1640 and I'm worried the 13 screen will feel too small when at home for long periods. This will be my daily driver at home and on the go so I'd like it fairly light with decent battery (7-8 hrs) which is right between the two. I've test drove a Surface Pro 4 for a couple days and at work it feels fine but at home it feels small (the difference between sitting at a desk close to it vs sitting back on my couch).

I got the XPS 15 (i7 1080p version) a few days ago. Performance is fantastic and the trackpad blew me away. I agree with everything you said. The battery life is probably the biggest letdown. Having 56 watt hours just isn't enough, even for the 1080p version. getting the 84 would probably bump my battery life from 4 to 6 hours. Personal opinion, I think 4k on anything smaller than 20" or so is overkill. Very unnecessary and in laptops and phones it is just a good way to get less battery life. Wish dell would have given more flexibility on the 1080p version
@MatthewMoniz
@MatthewMoniz 9 жыл бұрын
+Corey Lyons If you saw the screen on the 4K version you wouldn't say it's overkill. It's a big improvement. But the 1080p screen is really nice as well. I agree about battery life, it's too bad they didn't keep it 84Whr across the board! It would of significantly improved the battery for the FHD version. Thanks Corey for watching!

Is XPS 15 good for software Developers?
@pringlized
@pringlized 7 жыл бұрын
Totally. I have the 13 and have had zero performance related issues with programming and doing the occasional graphic design. My friend has the 15 and it's a beast. If you plan on doing any machine learning don't even try it on the 13. Waste of time, I learned the hard way. The 15 does have a dedicated nvidia card, so you can run small data sets successfully without waiting 3 days.

I need a highly portable laptop with ability to run Autocad, Archicad, Revit, Sketchup, Photoshop etc, will the XPS13 Handle the use of 3d with only 8 GB of RAM? The 15" is really too big for me to carry around everyday..
@MidnightMuzic
@MidnightMuzic 8 жыл бұрын
You could always upgrade the ram easily but for the type of work your doing generally the bigger screen will benefit you better. Just remember that the 15" is just the screen size and not the body itself. The Xps 15 has the 15" screen in a 14 in form factor and the 13" is a 13" screen in a 12" form factor

Thank you for the advice, I went to check out some 13" models and I didn't realise just how small it was, not great for my work. So I've decided on the 15" in the end. Hopefully the extra heat won't be a problem. Thanks again for the information!

I'm currently using a MBP 13 inch Retina Late 2012 and so far my laptop has shut down on it's own less than 10 times I believe in the last 4 years? However, I realise that it's starting to slow down. Not in terms of booting up time or anything big but it's when I watch KZbin videos, I like watching the videos in full screen but when I switch back to default view, it's not the smoothes when it comes to the transitioning from default view to full screen and vice versa. There is noticeable lag when I swipe for mission control but only when I put it to sleep a lot due to coursework purposes and there can be a lot of tabs opened. All these web browsing is done on Chrome, if that makes any difference. My question is, should I get the Dell XPS 15? I definitely want a 15 inch screen, a 16GB of RAM and quad-core i7 processor. What are your thoughts? I can also settle with 512GB/ 256GB SSD since all my work are on Google Drive.

I have the XPS 15 and I have two complaint. My screen was flickering brand new from Microsoft Store but I believe an update fixed that. Also, when I put in sleep mode it literally loses 40% of battery after like 6 hours. I'm hoping an update solves this because that really is a bummer being that this is a beautiful crafted and seems to be great running machine. Any tips?
