Thank you for your attention to detail. I am sure you will be getting a lot more followers soon. I love your honest and candid review of this laptop. And, very rare these days, you give a follow up months later. That is when you find out what is really wrong with a product. Much more useful than someone that uses it for a week or so. I just bought it a few day ago. Haven't had a chance to use it a lot yet. To be honest, I was very hesitant to buy this laptop. I read so many negative reviews on sites of people having problems with drivers and other things not working properly. And I've also been hearing the Dell's customer support is not very good. So I decided to go to my local store and get it from there instead of ordering by mail. That way I could bring it right back to the store if I opened it up and they were any problems. Thankfully that didn't happen. The laptop is great. I got the full version of the laptop. 16 gig ram, 1 gig ssd, 4k touch screen, etc...Looking forward doing some real world projects on it. One thing you and I have not encountered is Dell customer service. Dell does seem to have a problem with quality control. Too many people are complaining about getting units that were dead on arrival, having display issues, etc.. You did not mention the scaling problem in this latest review. This is a problem. If you're using older software and sometimes your icons are so small you cannot use them at the highest resolution. Is it is impossible to see them. You can go to the lower resolutions but that defeats the advantage of having a 4k screen. Sorry for the novel. :) One last thing. I was trying to guess where you are from based on your accent. I guessed Adelaide. Oooops. It's Melbourne, right? That is one of my favorite Australian cities.

Thanks for your kind comments mate. The screen issues were 99% Intel's driver issues. I even got the flicker using edge. I did not panic and write it all over the internet. I could tell it was a driver issue because it would tell you so. Latest Intel drivers have resolved most problems. Actually you will see many problems with any Skylake based laptops Like the Surfacebook even this Dell and HP Envy I reviewed did not shut down when you closed the lid properly before Bios updates. It's a Skylake thing mostly. That being said no product is perfect. As for Dell support they have been pretty good for me over the years. The problem is you will only hear on the internet the 1 of of 100 people who got screwed. I have noticed scaling only on OBS screen recorder and one other app I can't remember. I'm pretty simple though. A couple of games the Adobe suite and OBS I don't have any other apps. Most decent apps will resolve the issue soon. I guess if you have legacy apps you might have a problem. All the best cheers.

Nice review! I have the i5 FHD version of this laptop and I too had the spacebar issue. Dell sent me a replacement keyboard for free and the new spacebar is much better than the one that came with my laptop. However, replacing it was a hassle! You have to remove almost everything from the inside to access the keyboard. If you aren't confident in disassembling the laptop, you can ship it to dell to have them do it for you or go to a local computer shop and pay someone to do it.
@TallyHoTech8 жыл бұрын
+bellzsr That good and bad news I suppose. It think I will ask for a keyboard too. Its great they gave you solutions but in Australia they will actually send out a guy to repair it instead of you sending it in. I guess that depends on where you live. The keyboard is just about the worst thing you can replace. Send it in if you're not confident. Lets us know how you go. Tally Ho

+Patrick Star I'm not expecting much more than a Skylake refresh, hopefully a 4k screen with smaller bezels. I don't see what else the MAc could have. I'm thinking where the Mac will fall down is it will most likely use a AMD GPU which does not have CUDA cores so unless you use Final Cut Pro it wont be as good for video editing as the XPS 15.

I'm at nearly 3 months now on my XPS 15 9550. Just like you said, mine too, has no wear on it. However, right away, I noticed that the keyboard keys are coated in such a way that they not only get dirty very quickly but when dirty, they look faded/worn out-ish. I mostly notice it when daylight from my office window hits it. I clean the keys and for a very short period, they look shiny black and nice again. I'm thinking it's because I use hand lotion daily but the carbon fiber deck of my unit, hardly ever gets dirty. Another issue, one that really bugs me is that my unit is very slow to go to sleep and resume from sleep. I've done all of the BIOS and Dell updates I could find but it remains slow. I've also gone into the power profiles and turned on hybrid sleep.

Been keeping up with your videos for a fee months now and was just wondering: What applications don't scale well with the 4k screen? The 1080p has better battery life than later and doesn't suffer from down scaling issues in game (a lost of quality cause by running a resolution less than native). Your praise for the 4k screen have really made me wonder if I want the 1080p screen or not.
@TallyHoTech9 жыл бұрын
Well the 4k is the best screen I have used not to say the FHD is bad. OBS screen recorder is the only app I noticed scaling on. Only downside to 4k is less battery than FHD. Do you need 4k?
@blatcher29 жыл бұрын
+Western Gents United As a highschool senior looking for a powerhouse of a notebook with decent battery life, I dont NEED 4k. The 4k screen would mostly be used for notes and essays. I want the XPS 15 for its power (quad core was a requirement), sleekness, and battery life. I like the idea of higher DPI but do you think its worth it for the sacrificed battery life / readability
@TallyHoTech9 жыл бұрын
+blatcher2 If you don't need 4kand you want battery life definitely get the 1080P unless depending on your usage getting 5 to 7 hours is enough battery life for you. The Next Mccbook Pro will only be a Skylake refresh it may or may not have a 4k screen but at best I think it will only match the XPS 15 and not exceed it at all and by very little. Also with the XPS 15 you will get all the advantages of Windows (more apps, works with everything and gaming) and you will save yourself at least $1000. I will be looking at the Macbook Pro when it comes out. I guess you have a choice to make. Let us know what you choose. Tally Ho

Thanks for the review. I just bought one of these myself last week and so far it's been - ok. I actually took back the first one I bought because I found myself in an endless loop of installing the OS immediately followed by it booting into recovery mode every time. I'm curious about whether you reinstalled the OS or used the default Dell image. On my second unit I had planned to wipe the factory image and reinstall from scratch, but for whatever reason I could never get it to detect that there was a disk present during the Windows setup (which is one of the symptoms I saw in my first one I took back). Since I'd already wasted a day and a half trying to get the first one running, I gave up and just went with the default Dell OS install, upgrading to Pro from there. I'm not unhappy with it, but not entirely happy either - I'm noticing that the OS seems to hang periodically even when the system is not under a load. I'd give it a 7.5/10, which I suspect would go up if I could figure out how to just wipe and reinstall from scratch.

+Tim Mitchell Hey champ. I have the video for you on how to install Windows on the XPS 15 and yes I always fresh install. The reason Windows does not see your SSD I'd because in the Bios the SATA mode is set to raid on. In this case you will need to load the Intel rapid storage controller (f6). But if you follow my method it's better. Check out my how to install Windows 10 on the Dell XPS 15

FYI, confusingly AHCI mode in the RAID settings puts the SSD into native NVMe mode. The RAID ON option turns on Intel Rapid Storage Technology, which will emulate AHCI. (It's more complicated than that, but that's the gist of it.) AHCI mode probably should be renamed to something like "native mode" since the meaning was originally for non-NVMe drives, i.e. if have an older system with a SATA drive, AHCI has the drive natively exposed (it uses AHCI) whereas RAID ON mode lets you RAID the drive by itself (degraded RAID) or with another drive. (Obligatory disclaimer: I work for Dell.)
@TallyHoTech9 жыл бұрын
I actually did say in my 1 month review that I don't know if Dell call NVMe something else in the Bios. I have been told by Dell support its not possible to NVMe boot because the hardware is not capable. I don't know what to believe but surely if you have the XPS 15 AHCI mode that's not the same as running in the NVMe protocol? If you could clear that up it would be good.
@jaredzzz9 жыл бұрын
"AHCI mode" means native drive mode. The bizarre wording is because of IRST and the wording not being changed to reflect IRST support being added for NVMe in our Skylake client systems. When you use RAID mode, the BIOS does a port remapping of the NVMe drive and instead exposes a virtual disk where AHCI is emulated. I believe it's the PCH doing the emulation but would need to actually check on that. I'm an OS Architect on our client Linux team where I've helped with getting support for NVMe on our client systems. (We've already been shipping hot swappable NVMe drives on our servers for years.) Intel doesn't support the IRST version needed for NVMe IRST RAID on Linux, so instead we only support native NVMe mode, which is supported. We have a rule in our order system that when Ubuntu is ordered on a client system with an NVMe drive, the BIOS setting in question is set to AHCI mode, as that is how we set the drive to be used in the supported native NVMe mode.
@jaredzzz9 жыл бұрын

So I've just started a new job, I'm a software developer, my employer asked me what machine I'd like and (not to be cheeky) I suggested an AMD desktop machine for around £800, my employer laughed at me and ordered one of these xps 15 machines, after reading up on the spec and watching a couple of your vids (and others) I have to say I cannot wait for my new laptop to arrive!

+Western Gents United So the laptop arrived today, as I mentioned before I'm a software developer and I mainly use my machines for VM's and heavy code editing using either Visual Studio or PHPStorm, this laptop is far beyond anything I need for work! Build quality is top notch, carbon fiber keyboard surround is lovely though I generally plug in a wired keyboard and mouse. The screen is gorgeous, the ssd is out of this world and even with fast boot disabled (because I run Ubuntu dual boot and sometime need to mount the windows partition) it still boots up in the blink of an eye. This is the single best machine I have used in any category whether it be gaming (kerbal space program and elite dangerous) or serious coding, or running virtual machines this beast laughs at everything. +Western Gents United There was a third. On the third try Dell finally concluded that it was not repairable and, last week, offered me a full refund. The fact that they did, I think, shows how committed their are to their customer satisfaction guarantee. Since I had very strong reason to believe that the problem was with that particular unit and not the XPS 15 9550 design as such, I promptly went to the local Microsoft Store and purchased another one. Then I wrote the last Dell support rep with whom I spoke to tell him that I had done so because I really do love the design of the machine, I was convinced that my experience with it was a atypical, and wanted to cast my vote for them attempting to push the envelope with design, which they obviously did here. The new one is sitting right next to me now, working out just fine. I'm happy with it. :)

+Western Gents United Sorry buddy, but the Zenbook Pro is using Skylake, same chip as the XPS and uses DDR4 RAM. In fact specs are about the same. You're thinking of last year's model so maybe research it. Dell has better screen and battery while Zenbook runs a bit cooler and quieter. If money is no object the Dell XPS 15 is slightly better but the Zebook Pro 15 is pretty sick and in my opinion looks better as its all metal and fingerprints aren't an issue

@TallyHoTech9 жыл бұрын
No I don't do anything. Your mileage will vary I guess. The only thing I done was a fresh install. Update the Bios and reset Bios to defaults and I have no bloatware. Just they apps I need like Adobe Suite a couple of games. Many people might not know but Chrome is a battery resource hog especially with plug ins. So on battery I use edge.

I've been a mac user for the longest time (Though, I'm not completely narrow-minded like other folks) for the fact that my mac has never failed me during live performances, and also I prefer the OS. However, It's come time for me to upgrade, and I've been exercising all my options. The PC market has definitely stepped up it's game, and the OS seems like it's getting better with time. I feel like I've narrowed it down between the XPS 15 and the Asus ROG G501. Aesthetically pleasing, and enough under the hood to get things done. I've done some research and found out Asus has the least failure rate amongst PC's. Which is assuring. However, I can't help but feel more attracted towards this dell. My main concern with spending this much on a PC is the longevity. Especially coming from Dell! I never thought I'd be looking into Dell's, but here I am, foaming at the mouth over this gorgeous machine. I guess my question is, for anybody who's owned these new XPS models is would you recommend it? Have you encountered any issues?
@TallyHoTech8 жыл бұрын
+Mart Web I'm the same here. I really don't care Mac or PC other than the PC I can game on and everything works and I more App and utilities choice. I just get what I think is the best machine I can but for my needs. I weighed up the 15" MacBook Pro, ASUS ux501(The ROG G501 was not skylake) ect. At the end of the day the XPS 15 is just the best of the bunch. Best Specs, small size. I have had 0 problems and highly recommend this laptop and build quality and upgradability. If you have a problem Dell will sort it out. Mine was one of the first 9550 to be released last November.I expect any teething problems to have been sorted by now. Tally ho.

Do the fans run while the laptop is just charging and idling at the desktop? Read some stuff online that indicated issues like that including connectivity with the TB 15 Thunderbolt 3 dock. If you could advise especially about the fans always being on while charging it would be great. I'm thinking of cancelling my UHD/i7/512SSD/16GB order right because of many horror stories online.

@TallyHoTech8 жыл бұрын
+Gowii Well I sold my Macbook Pro 13 2015 and got the XPS 15. Best decision ever. As for the 2016 MBP 15. There are no new Intel CPUs out so at best it Specs will just be a match with the XPS 15. So that being the case and seeing the XPS 15 can be easily upgraded and you will save a lot of money. For me the XPS 15 is a no brainer
@3rdlastsurvivor9 жыл бұрын
I only get 5-6 hours with the updated BIOS. I always have it at 25 percent Brightness and this is the battery time for web browsing. I have the i5 with the 56 watt battery is this normal? I feel like Macafee (pre-installed) uses a lot of power. Should I do a fresh install? Should I get rid of Macafee? Is it bad to not have a antivirus p? Also just wondering what is the bloat ware I can uninstall?
@TallyHoTech9 жыл бұрын
6 hours is a good number. I use edge when on battery (chrome can guzzle juice) and I done a fresh Windows install. So that's no bloat Macafee (it has defender built in) I only installed Premiere colour, dell power management and Dell updater. I left the rest to Windows to sort out
@3rdlastsurvivor9 жыл бұрын
+Western Gents United is it worth keeping mcafee on? I feel like I should have virus protection but it kills battery! How did you do a fresh install by the way and last question, what number should I expect with the 56 watt battery I thought I would be better considering there's only a i5 in the device (awesome channel btw)
@TallyHoTech9 жыл бұрын
+THIRD | Counter Strike Fresh install you make a bootable Win 10 usb from here www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10 then all you do is run the setup.exe inside the windows bootable usb you make (back up your stuff 1st) then follow the prompts and select don't keep anything when you install. I would not use Macafe, windows defender is fine.

I have bios 1.15 which I think is the latest but I'm only getting 5 hours max ?.....the only think I hate about this computer is that it hasn't got OSX....
@TallyHoTech9 жыл бұрын
I guess your mileage may vary. If I'm inside in a low light situation. 25% screen brightness is sufficient for me. I done a fresh install of Windows and I have no bloat or antivirus. The day I sold my 13" Macbook Pro I was doing cartwheels I did not have to suffer the pain of Mac OSX. Yosemite was a dog of a OS. To be fair El Capitan did improve things somewhat but not enough to make me stay.
@ThePaulpope9 жыл бұрын
+JC Vesicularia Ummmm not much I don't like about OSX... still lots I don't like about Windows. Worst thing about Windows is there is no built in .pdf support except for the stupid browser and movie editing is a pain in the ass. Also it's basically a support program for spyware if you Se default privacy settings.
@csaREEM9 жыл бұрын
+JC Vesicularia I don't mind Mac OSX but Yosemite was buggy and the frigging WiFi on 5Ghz was always playing up. The thing is the XPS 15 was a much better computer (better specs and more powerful) and it was actually cheaper than the latest MBP 13" so I guess it was a easy decision. At the end of the day the OS either way don't bother me.
@ThePaulpope9 жыл бұрын
+JC Vesicularia It's not fabulous it does collect fingerprints and they really can't be cleaned easily but it also tends to be a very matte finish so they don't show as much as they might on other surfaces. But still it is a issue.

I went to the store and my eyes can't see the pixels of the 1080p version... why 4K? if you lower the resolution to 1080p, do you still get the 10 hour battery life benefit?
@TallyHoTech9 жыл бұрын
I edit 4k video and I can see it one to one. It's also useful if you want multiple windows open at once. Your right though if you don't need it there is no point getting it
@luisgarciaalanis9 жыл бұрын
+Western Gents United Have you tried lowering the res just to see battery life at 1080p. I assume what really consumes power is the x4 pixel computation and not the amount of pixels on the lcd. Its hard to find an objective review of the machine at 1080p...

Outcome now is I'm seeking a cheap laptop for everyday work while this beast sits alone on the temperamental DELL Dock...

@TallyHoTech9 жыл бұрын
In the Bios there are 2 options AHCI and RAID. There is no NVMe mode. Now from what I'm hearing from Dell is selecting AHCI will allow the SSD to run in its native mode. So if you have a NVMe drive I guess that means it can run in NVMe mode. It's a little confusing. It would be better if they had had a NVMe mode selectable in the BIOS instead of us just guessing if running in AHCI mode it's actually running in its native NVMe mode. I don't know my head hurts
@Studio-7V9 жыл бұрын
+Western Gents United My head hurts too but I have a bit of an insight. AHCI is generally the interface the NVMe standard uses. RAID is just for multiple drive configurations. The best way to check if its running at NVMe speeds is to make a few disk read/write benchmarks. If reads are around 1500mb/s and writes are about 1000mb/s then its running at full speed. If you get something like 500mb/s or both then that's bad news. Could you check anytime soon?
@Studio-7V9 жыл бұрын
+7Valletta Pardon me, just saw your video about the new SSD. So you are getting the full r/w speeds, essentially running I'm NVMe mode. What interface was that video on, SATA or RAID?
@TallyHoTech9 жыл бұрын
I have a video on my SSD speeds. It was set to raid. I believe Dell do that because there are so many configuration and some have HDD and SSD so it just easier to set every machine to raid. The speeds I got was like 2400 read 1500 write people were getting the same speeds in AHCI too. Note we were using Samsung 950 Pros

@vono3609 жыл бұрын
+Western Gents United the nice thing about desktops is that you can build one from nothing that is two times as powerful as this laptop, for half the price! When you spend just as much on a desktop as you did this laptop, you get extreme overkill for a desktop.

+vono360 Alright, tell me when you've found a way to carry a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers/headphones, cables, and the desktop tower easily with no strain and set it up in a couple of seconds, with only using a small sleeve.
@vono3609 жыл бұрын
+Meep Stein uhm.... That would be why I spent 2 grand on this laptop. It's a fantastic mobile workstation and is pretty powerful. But it still can't compare to a 2000 dollar desktop. It could never replace that desktop. That's all I said. Especially when you consider 2-3 monitors, a full mechanical keyboard, a full mouse, speakers you can actually use to fill a room and the ability to have hard drives with storage space reaching into the 10's of terabytes. Couple all of that with the ability to switch out a dead graphics card or a cpu, and you can't beat a desktop for the main computer.
