Just wanted to quickly say THANK YOU to NotebookcheckReviews for the review! This was exactly the comparison that I was searching around multiple places for. So glad that I found it on YT and I love that it's so detailed. It helped in making the decision on which display is right for me.

Great comparison video. I purchased the early 2015 (non Skylake) Dell XPS 13 i7 QHD model and ended up returning it due to battery and scaling issues. I am now looking at an XPS15 FHD model.

I have the matte FHD version. The battery performance for regular use is just mind blowing. On a flight UK to NY, watched three movies and still have juice left over on arrival at the hotel to use for an hour. Best ultrabook I've ever used. For office environments with overhead lighting the matte screen is much nicer.
@bebopanda46228 жыл бұрын
How is the display? did you use it in sunny places? How about the speakers? People have been saying the speakers suck.
@OneAndOnlyMe8 жыл бұрын
Meow Moosawi Both screen and speakers are perfectly capable. Some folks expect too much from an ultrabook form factor.

This is by far the best review I have ever seen by far and I'm a techie Linux nurd watching KZbin for years. My compliments I'm considering the xps13 developers edition Matt display full hd. With the longer battery life

Very good video - thanks. A question - the QHD version can have its resolution set to 1080p, correct? Does that help with the battery life?
@maribwana8 жыл бұрын
Doing that would make everything on the display appear slightly blurry. As for the battery life, I assume it would help to a slight degree. Simply because the GPU would be working less hard to render graphics in 1080p over the native QHD.
@ch.r28809 жыл бұрын
Also great that a personal choice is stated and justified, while highlighting the benefits of both versions.
@cswann88 жыл бұрын
For the vast majority of users the 1080p non-touch is the smarter option. Those that can benefit from a QHD display know who they are and why they need it. But then those folks typically go for a 15" laptop for their portable workstation. Anyone that wants an XPS 13 for a school computer or a light-weight laptop for media consumption/web browsing....get the 1080 screen and enjoy the extra cash in your pocket and better battery life.
@ashoif778 жыл бұрын
But what about it your going into Photography, Digital media or graphic design for college and would benefit from the extra clarity and sharpness?
@AndrewHelgeCox9 жыл бұрын
Great work, thank you. In your idle power usage investigation you speculate on various factors causing the differences. I notice the screen is changing because of the graph update, so there is GPU work being done painting the graph, compositing the framebuffer etc. That is a lot of bandwidth at the resolution. Bandwidth -> power usage. Also the scan out of the framebuffer requires higher bandwidth than the fullhd. I would be very interested to see the same test done with the screen resolution quartered (half horizontal, half vertical) to see if that brought power closer to the fullhd model. that would still be a useable resolution and an easy hack for boosting battery life on the road. Also, if the refresh could be dropped below 60Hz, that might help too. Can you give that a try?

@steverix81818 жыл бұрын
One thing to be aware of when choosing between these two models is that both models have a so called feature called Content Adaptive Brightness Control. This function dims and brightens the display automatically depending upon what is being displayed. It's a horrible feature, many are reporting how distracting it is. It also makes conducting any kind of colour accurate photography editing or graphic work impossible. Crucially, this shitty feature can only be disabled on the QHD model as the FHD panel can't be firmware upgraded! Nice, Dell.

In terms of effective pixel, does the QHD+ is something like retina which means that the 3200x1800 is actually a 1600x900 which is less space than then FHD of 1920x1080?

I'm not a fan of touch but would prefer the glossy panel over matte. Is there a configuration to have the 1080p FHD with a glossy screen? Or is it locked only to QHD? I haven't found confirmation that you can over Dell's site or even on other reviews of this laptop.

Hey, love the reviews! I noticed something while reading the QHD review. Under storage benchmark, AS SSD test - the QHD is getting a lot higher scores than the FHD (4k = 97 VS 1 MB/s) Is there a reason to this, like a glitch or something? I couldn't find a comment on this!

@mouselim729 жыл бұрын
1addictsad78 I'm torn...either between the non-touch (with 8GB ram and 256SSD) and the touch (also with 8GB ram and 256 SSD but with i7 instead of i5). My only two considerations for choosing between either one is the battery life and the reflective screen. Some folks are claiming that the touch version only gives 6-7 hrs and that it is darn near impossible to use in sunlight (due to the reflective nature). is this true? Thanx dude.
@ad789 жыл бұрын
+Nicholas Lim unfortunately I never tried it in sunlight.. I'm getting really good battery life. I guess you can't go wrong with the FHD version. make sure update the bios.

Good stuff. Was thinking to purchase i7-8550U touch screen. Now £1300 at Amazon. Reason why i mention the processor is because it is stated to be 4 times more efficient than last year I7. I wonder what the impact is. Does it take the qhd to above 10 hours now? If not i'll go for FHD still.

It's not just about seeing pixels. It's the amount of information you can display on the screen at one time. higher resolution is better for spreadsheets, working with two docs in the window at once, Adobe products, anything where you have a lot going on at the same time.

Dell reduced the bezel thickness to the maximum, but this laptop still weights a full pound more than the lenovo lavie despite having a smaller footprint even the LG gram 15 which is a 15.6" weights 0.5lbs less than the xps 13 the only explaination I can come up with is that Dell added some poop inside the xps 13

With these detailed tests, you should go back to old reviews and complete the data and publish a powerful laptop selection tool. The laptop comparison on your website isn't that useful now. The worst part is the search. Such a shame that all this amount of knowledge is not usable enough.

Matte screens are Fing gross. Use a Asus laptop with matte and you will NEVER go to matte again. They do not retain colour, have awful sharpness, look muddy and colourless. Wish dell had a 1080p glossy screen with the 6560u would be a match made in heaven.

I can only use matte displays. I have an MSI gaming laptop right now and the matte display is so nice to my eyes. I'm also a student and I constantly have to find places on campus to study that usually are outdoors, near windows, or under harsh lighting.
