I've had this XPS 9570 for about 6 months now and overall it has been very good. The biggest issue has been the thermals, as Lisa mentioned, but a repaste/undervolt takes care of this for the most part. The 4K screen is excellent with minimal back-light bleed, but the reds are indeed overblown - however you can tune them down via Intel Graphics Control Panel. Minimal/non-existent coil whine - Dell seems to have fixed this issue for the most part via BIOS updates. Battery life is surprisingly not bad - you can actually push 8-9 hrs or longer with a combination of the undervolt, Battery Saver mode, and even turning down the screen resolution to 1440p or 1080p in a pinch to squeeze out more battery life.

Sent my X1E back. Fantastic display, but the heat spiked often and opening anything caused the fans to whir like a jet engine. There has been some success with others via repasting and changing filter material. This trend of cramming top tier cpus and then throttling them is making us spend money on performance that never arrives in these thin laptops. If you’re going to get the X1E the i5 yields none of the aforementioned problems. The 8850 is what I had. Other than that, the keyboard is so good. Way better than these trash Mac keyboards
@blackice2145 жыл бұрын

i got 8850h too. I gave it a try for one week. In the first day the heat indeed made fans spinning a lot but after that unless gaming, it calmed down a lot during normal usage like watching youtube, browsing webpages and doing word editing.
@justinbagdon51165 жыл бұрын
That's good to know, I ended up with the 8750 and repasted with liquid metal, I think this configuration must be alot more stable as the fans do still spin up quite often but quickly cool the cpu or gpu and I haven't had concerning Temps. Generally around 80 c in intense tasks. (Edit: since my last post I also use throttlestop to undervolt my computer it now runs no hotter than 70c. )Also if you have the 8850 h I would recommend tp fan control and make a more aggressive fan profile at lower temps. These will completely solve any heat issues.

I needed to decide between them and as an old T480s owner I had my heart on the X1E but the small battery, horrible Full HD Display and worse price/performance pushed me to buy the XPS 15. Everyone compares 4K vs 4k on these displays but most people buy the Full HD Display so I would say comparing them is also really important.
@pete31985 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the "base level" Lenovo displays tend to be absolutely horrifyingly bad. If you upgrade to the premium display options I've found they are quite nice, but the entry level ones are really, really bad. Often crappy TN panels, and even when they are IPS panels they are low res and often have poor contrast and terrible colour accuracy. I have definitely found Dell to be more consistent on the Display side. Their top tier displays are mindblowing good, but even their base displays tend to look decent.
@arda_5 жыл бұрын
@@pete3198 I totally agree! My t480s had the 1440p display and I was quite pleased with it. As far as I know the Full HD panel on the xps 15 is a pretty expensive panel, Frank Azor(head of xps) mentioned it on twitter. It is a color accurate ,400 nit panel whereas the industry standard is still 300nits. It has worse performance when it comes to response times but no one is buying the xps to game on it.

One major difference is that a Thinkpad simply works. And if something should happen, there'll be great support. And on top of that tens of thousands of Thinkpad lovers worldwide who like to help each other out in different forums. Dell computers are the exact opposite. You briefly touched upon this in your review, but it is THE MOST important issue for us professional users! Dell computers are unstable, they break, and when that happens there'll be ZERO help. Costumer support is abysmal. No help from the company, and you'll also have a hard time finding people online with any love towards their Dells. You're basically on your own with a deficient product. It's incredible if you can get a Thinkpad for the same price as a Dell, because the most important aspects of it (reliability and support) are SO MUCH better. It should be double the price if the specs are the same.

The Lenovo has a second Thunderbolt port, which should not be looked at lightly. Also, in real world testing the Dell suffers a ton from thermal throttling. Although both companies seem to use really cheap thermal grease and significant speed/ heat improvement can be made by replacing the grease with Arctic Silver or some other quality thermal paste. Other than that, both machines are extremely capable and comparable. I tend to think that Dell May have better support, but I have actually heard of some issues with Dell as of late. And yes, these are the best reviews on the internet!

XPSs are always having issues. At the company where I'm working at we have 5 XPSs - only the xps 15 didn't do any problem. all the smaller ones (i think 13? 14?) had to change hdd/motherboard / bad thermals, etc. X1 had issues of his own with really bad drivers, but now it's great. Go with the x1, believe me you'll have a better luck.

As a student who likes to game sometimes I opted for the dell. Lenovo is very respected and the ThinkPad looks really cool, the only thing that turned be away was the fn and ctrl key switch (which you can switch in bios but I’m still picky), the lack of media keys, and the battery life. I need good battery life and get more than a day’s work on the dell. I got the 512gb ssd, 16gb ram fhd model for $1400 while the Lenovo (then) was around $2300 for same spec. However if you want the ThinkPad, I still believe it’s on discount for around $1600

I knew that Lisa was one of the very few dissenters that the XPS 15 is the best choice of machine, but I didn't listen and I got one and it has been a major headache. It's beautiful, the 4k screen is amazing, etc. but it's been trouble the entire time I've had it. Critical thermal shutdowns started within one month and it ended up getting a refurbished motherboard replacement which I didn't see coming as the onsite fix. I knew about the repasting and undervolting, but I thought those guys must be gamers. Nope. Mine literally dried up and started shutting down withing one month and it made me believe something more serious must be wrong with it and I was timid about breaking it open and voiding the warranty. Anyway, it's still crashing and I see in her reviews that they found this to be common? Graphics related? I've been stressed that the motherboard they gave me was worn out or what IDK. I'm trying to give it the cleanest Windows reinstall possible to see if there is hope. A reinstall from inside Windows didn't fully do the trick. It passes most hardware tests though. It just isn't fully stable and it's embarrassing to be out in public and have the high dollar Dell blue screen. I was previously a desktop technician for several years and it makes me look like an idiot that deserved to lose my job (it was political to put it mildly) because this thing is so unstable. I worked on a video of a trip recently and it refused to encode it - crashing within minutes. So, this isn't working. I wanted something to edit in Lightroom with. I'm just a hobbyist photographer, but I shoot a full frame Nikon D750 in Adobe RGB (mostly just because why not) and it was silly to do more than perform backups on my old cheap laptop. As stated I want something with some power to edit video. Even cellphone video from my Samsung S8 is 4k and it takes some muscle to push it around even if only throwing clips on the timeline with simple cuts between them. I'm not much of a 'gamer' but I do play some Xbox Forza racing and I've frankly enjoyed just having the ability to whip out a Xbox controller and start playing some Forza wherever I am on the otherwise sexy little thin and light laptop. I considered jumping over to one of the 'gaming' laptops. Razor, Aero, etc. but there are compromises there with either build quality or shortfalls otherwise with the screens, no sd card reader, etc. I'm still considering it. The beefier video cards would be the advantage, but I'm not sure how much impact to Davinci Resolve they would actually have. Just playing higher frame rates of Forza wouldn't be a very good reason to choose one. I've even given thought to moving to Apple, but wow are they expensive and it frankly scares me that you can't replace any components. I'm still fairly new to SSD, but as I gather they do wear out just like a mechanical hard drive for example. It's not even as much the factor of being stuck with what you bought for capacity as the overall longevity of the machine seeming compromised (without whatever expense involved to have it serviced I presume) and for that kind of money? I would have to buy new copies of Lightroom and probably want Final Cut Pro too so there's another $500 at least. I might even consider and older model of Macbook Pro, but even those are as expensive as any cutting edge spec Windows machine and they weren't cutting edge when they were new. I, however, fully support the Apple company philosophy of protecting their customers privacy. I'm sure there is question how much they actually do so, but for me personally it almost makes the expense worth it to vote with my dollars to support them and move away from Microsoft, Google, etc. If I suffer a bit of performance loss to a more cutting edge Windows machine it's not like I'm doing this 40 hours a week anyway. It's not just about being one of the cool kids with a Mac at the cafe for me. I appreciate their stance on the privacy of their customers being important to them. I'm open to suggestions. Anything that I haven't considered that is a serious competitor on the Windows side? Like is this Levono the most serious competitor? Lightroom is probably #1 - so, a great screen and as close to Adobe RGB as possible would be nice, but if it's more color accurate maybe that outweighs ultimate coverage. Video editing #2 and it needs to push simple 4k edits - so, probably any 8th gen i7 can handle it, but it can't thermal shutdown over it. Gaming would be #3 and frankly it's not a deal breaker if it can't run Forza. That's just a super cool party trick imo.

My Dell XPS 15 is arriving tomorrow and I'm really looking forward to it. Dell just had a sweet deal and I got it for ~1500€ (FHD, i7-8750H, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) so it's at least 500€ cheaper then a X1E with similar specs. Although the Lenovo might be a bit higher quality, the price difference is just too big. I also use a company supplied Latitude 5580 and my partner has a XPS 13 9370 and both of them have zero issues. Subjectively speaking, the Dell seems to be the better choice. edit: It arrived! Unfortunately one fan is rattling a bit. I'm gonna contact support. I hope they send a service technician to fix it. Besides that, everything works great. Installing Ubuntu was a bit of a hassle, but that's hardly Dell's fault.

Can't go wrong with Thinkpad support and quality. They have tanked a bit since the T400 series but they're still well made laptops with great keyboards. That touch point is really nice. I prefer it over trackpad.
@pete31985 жыл бұрын
@@timothyandrewnielsen I'll have to agree to disagree with you on support. Lenovo support is typically horrendously bad. Up there with HP as some of the worst customer support I've ever dealt with in the industry. Far as products go, the X1 Carbons and X1 Yogas seem to have exceptionally good quality control. The other Thinkpad models in my experience have been a bit hit-and-miss.

@@pete3198You have a point about support. They used* to be very good however I have had a couple issues with getting them to replace faulty screens lately. I had to seriously complain to a manager to get them to do it. They tried hard not to do the repair. It wasn't always the case... Still... the keyboard positives outweigh the bad here. The trackpoint is a seriously wonderful little device that no other laptops have. I'd still buy lenovo (and do for my company) over HP/Dell. If lenovo keeps cutting corners, they could lose my business. Again, they're still #1 for me.
@pete31985 жыл бұрын
@@timothyandrewnielsen I've been dealing with them for about the past maybe 7 years, and I've had consistently poor service from them throughout. Their support technicians are generally pretty weak and often force you to run through trivial and pointless troubleshooting steps even after you've told them you have already done it... Trying to get any kind of quote for an out of warranty repair is a nightmare. I once had to chace Lenovo for TWO MONTHS for a quote for a motherboard replacement on an out of warranty model - and it's out of warranty, meaning they are actually making money from this. They still took forever. You often spend forever sitting on the phone on hold. The last ticket I raised with them was just before the Christmas holidays - I told them the customer was not in on the specific day, but would be back after the holidays. I even gave them an exact date that the customer would be returning and would be available to run through fruther troubleshooting steps. They closed the support ticket on me without my authority, without the issue being resolved, on the basis that they refused to wait two weeks for the customer to return from Chrismas holidays. I've never seen somebody do that in my 10+ years working in the IT support industry. One customer of mine had an on-site support agreement, and had a clause in their agreement stating that all repairs had to be done by Lenovo or warranty would be voided. Despite the agreement Lenovo still tried to avoid sending a tech out almost every time we called, instead trying to insist on sending out the part and having us replace it ourselves. When the technicians finally do agree to come out, they often take days. When it comes to Lenovo machines reliabliity is pretty much your last line of defense - because if you EVER get put in a situation where you have to actually call their support line, god help you.

I'll take the Thinkpad any day of the week. After using Thinkpads since I graduated, I got a Dell XPS 13 a few years ago. Build quality was subpar for the price, and it had a TERRIBLE case of coil whine that I couldn't get over. Had several months of back and forth with Dell's customer support where they promised a fix (yes yes there is a bios update coming, wait a few weeks!). Ended up returning it which they initially wouldn't allow (had to write a formal complaint letter to their HQ and call several times to follow up). Worst customer experience ever and of course YMMV, but I will never buy an XPS again... Currently interested in the X1E but might wait a bit for a refresh (not in a hurry)

I've been suffering these almost half a year now and Dell hasn't even admitted that there's a problem. Maybe we should start making pressure on social media so tech KZbinrs and people in general become aware of how Dell treats its costumers and how they put little to no attention to quality control. You're paying a premium to get worse hardware and software than a cheap laptop. The price can only be justified by the specs, but when you actually own one you realise how overpriced it is...

In the past month I had to send my XPS 15 to repair twice. I keep getting an issue with the display after I shut down the computer, it won't turn back on. Thankfully Dell's support is fantastic, although it's hurting my trust towards my laptop. This shouldn't be happening for the price you pay and as someone who uses it professionally, I need the computer working reliably 24/7. Makes me wonder if I should've gone with another laptop, although from what I see now a days, every laptop manufacturer has issues with quality control. With that said, I think it's important going with a brand that has great technical support, so you're not totally screwed. I'm coming from a Macbook Pro user for many years, so the transition hasn't been smooth at all unfortunately, but I'm not buying another Apple computer anytime soon. I can't justify paying so much for them, especially these days when their slower performance, lack of ports and expandability doesn't suit my needs. Giant rant aside, I do have my doubts. I actually have 5 days to exchange my laptop through Amazon. Should've I gone with another laptop in your opinion?

@@ImKevin In a way I do regret it, but I haven't spent enough time fully using it to know for sure. It broke on me the second week of me owning it and it broke down again only 2 days after I got it back from repair. Then again, I don't know any other laptop that truly compares to it for my needs (battery life, 4k color accurate screen, sd card, fast video rendering, build quality, etc) so I feel like I'm stuck with it until they can repair it 100%. I'm sure once it's working correctly, I will feel great with it. It's just not a good first impression and experience. Kinda ruined my "new gear" vibe really. My case could be rare bc it had to do with something faulty in the display, just sucks this is happening.

As somebody who has worked in IT support roles for around 10 years now, I've had consistently poor experiences dealing with Lenovo support regardless of whether it is for corporate or personal products. Dell support (both personal and corporate) on the other hand is without question the absolute best there is. As far as reliability goes, they are pretty roughly on par. This still works out cheaper than buying it locally here in Northern Ireland, here I find it for £1900 ($2400-/+) at the cheapest and I do not want to pay that much. Basically I'm wondering if it would be better to buy it from B&H or is there something obvious I'm missing, or something risky with this idea.
