@@carldrogo9492 i mean it is truly the last great thinkpad... until maybe the new T14 gen5 takes that title 2 or so years from now once they trickle down to enthusiasts for cheap. They went back to fully upgradable 2 DIMM slots for the ram and a battery that while internal, no longer is a "warranty void if removed" part. Wifi card still soldered, at least defo on intel tho afaik. Although it can be configured with wifi 7 support so should be more than future proof.

This is a terrific review, head and shoulders above all the rest I've seen, while shopping for a new Thinkpad. Lisa Gade is truly talented in being able to stick to what is relevant. Guess what? I'm upgrading to a T480s or X1 Carbon 6th gen from a...T60. Yup, I've had my laptop for 13 years.

Great video! I've gone with the T4x0s series since the T440s with my company since it came out and now we're using the T480s, which is the perfect balance between weight, thickness, power, and expandability. But it turns out with our new India users they can only get the T480 locally, so this helped me feel better about that situation.

I love her reviews as well, very professional and she is an expert in the field! One thing I don't understand is how everyone wants a super slim and ultralight laptop?!? I like my laptop to have some weight and thickness to it (just like other things in my life ;-). I use the T480 and love it. The 480s or the Carbon seem way too light and frail to me to use. I wouldn't call myself a "manly man either" 1:47. I just don't get this trend. I remember as a kid using a Toshiba EGA laptop that was about 2.5" thick so the T480 is plenty thin for me.

both models only have 2X PCIE for storage if you have the dGPU, which is a bummer. T480S does have the 15W TDP MX150 that is worse yet. I'd avoid the T480S with dGPU at all costs. I need one of these myself, I'm going with the T480S for dual heatpipes with 4X PCIE NVME, no dGPU. It's the only way to get 4X PCIE storage AFAIK.

The materials are different and a major differentiator between those models, in fact. The T480 is the most affordable and thus uses the cheapest materials: Glas Fiber Plastic with a Magnesium Structure Frame in the base. Its palmrest is also rough, uncoated plastic, which feels cheaper. The T480s is slightly more expensive. This makes a big difference in materials, as it has a base unit that is completely made out of Magnesium, while the display-cover ist Carbon fiber. Even more expensive is the X1 Carbon, which uses similar materials, though they are not completely identical. The X1 Carbon is also all-around coated with a rubbery coating.

Yes! Actually, we can find all these material specifications by typing for example 'Thinkpad t480 platform specifications' on google. I like the fact that Thinkpad T480, T480S, and X1 still keep a Magnesium frame inside the chassis which is a great structure to absorb any strong and sudden shock and strike etc. This Magnesium frame, which hold the motherboard and Hard Drive on it, is actually with 9% aluminum added, making it stronger. This Magnesium alloy's material label is AZ91D, which you can find on the frame. By the way, T480s has a bottom (cover+palmrest) made of AZ91D material while T480's bottom is AZ91D and plastic hybrid. For other mainstream and high-end business laptops that use 8th CPU, the Dell latitude 7490 and HP EliteBook 840 G5, I didn't find they are using this inner Magnesium skeleton inside the chassis. They just use this Magnesium alloy for the bottom cover. I don't know much about HP, but for Dell latitude 7490, it uses carbon fiber reinforced polycarbonate (PC-CF50, means that with 50% carbon fiber added), for the display lid and palmrest, which is very good! Polycarbonate or PC is just like Magnesium alloy, it has good ability to absorb sudden and strong shock and strike (say, your laptop dropped on the hard ground or a heavy item hits on the chassis). But PC is very vulnerable to a crack, and the drawback of Magnesium alloy is that it's too brittle. If you have a Magnesium alloy thin board on your hand and you bend it a bit hard, it easily gets broken. (Actually, a Chinese dude, who's a Thinkpad fan, I watched his video. He tested all these materials toughness by twisting them. Magnesium and PC get broken easily but PC+ABS material and carbon fiber reinforced plastic is much hard to break by twisting) For carbon fiber, which for now I saw it mostly used in Dell's Ltittude 5000 and 7000 series, once added, and if the percentage is high enough (ThinkPad X1 display lid adds 70% Carbon fiber with glass fiber), you can bend it, but it won't break! So, it will be tougher. But the drawback is that this carbon fiber reinforced PC is a bit soft (50% carbon fiber added), so Dell uses a Magnesium alloy base cover for its latitude 7490, making the whole system 'harder' rather than a soft but tough body. By the way, I think the Lattitude 5000 series is also a good one. The display lid and the base cover use 20% carbon fiber added PC, with some mineral fiber added as well; and the body is pure PC with 25% mineral fiber, very strong and hard, like alloy. So, I think Thinkpad T480 is just like the mammal, which has inner skeleton inside, but Latitude 5000 is like a turtle, which has a skeleton outside. So, I'd like to use a metaphor, that that hybrid plastic is just like human muscle and skin and Magnesium is more like our skeleton. Carbon fiber added material is like you are wearing Batman's battle suit, makes you much more versatile and stronger hahaha :p

Lisa, great review as always. But I noticed you showed measurements for the back of the machines but not the front. This is a little misleading as it shows the T480 and T480s being close to each other and noticeably thicker than the X1. But the T480s tapers in the front to a much thinner width, unlike the T480, making it closer to the X1.

I received my Gen 8 - 2 week ago. Mine comes with the UHD(3840x2160) IPS Glare 500nits display and it is simply astounding display. You watch a KZbin video and it's like you are there with them. The Dolby Atmos sound also is great. Coming from my previous bulky T520. It is so thin and light. I'm so happy with my choice.

So, I watched this video about 4-5 times (together with all your other individual videos on each of these machines) looking into all minute details before I ordered my Carbon X1 6th gen. I did make a mistake anyways even while being as careful as possible. Namely, I really wanted WWAN option (LTE) and while it was *not* available during the ordering process, I *wrongly* assumed (as there is a spot inside the machine for the expansion card and built in SIM card slot) that I could upgrade later. Alas, that is NOT the case IF you choose the best HDR display option. This one does NOT come with integrated antennas for LTE and thus cannot be expanded. You must choose the lower quality display if you want the LTE antenna integrated (but even then, unless you configure it with WWAN module during order process (which is now available)) you may or may not actually get the antenna. Reports on-line are hap-hazard. Some have the antenna, some do not. If you get the 480s - you can choose to get it with WWAN preparation (i.e. antenna installed). The 480 has no WWAN option (that'd be another diff between 480 and 480s). Hope this helps someone. While I love the HDR display - I kind of really wish I had WWAN. I will test a little solution though. I'll buy the WWAN card, and connect it to antennas for the WIFI. If that works, I'll just buy an external USB WiFi dongle and live with that :)

I bought the x1 carbon i7vpro and HDR, love this machine. I was contemplating t480s but the down side was that T480/s has 2 pci lanes and not 4 unlike the x1 carbon, so the x1 carbon has an edge when hooked up to an egpu. That and I love the screen ^^

I have been waiting for this comparison. Thanks for sharing! Can you please say anything about the t480 screen compared to the hdr screen? I am in doubt. I like the non glare option but also hdr :) How bad is the glare on the HDR model? Can you still work in the daytime or in sunlight with this screen? I use my laptop alott in the car and on the road, usually during daytime and glare screens are not my favorite. I still love the hdr screen and think with 500 nits it should not give any issues. I just want to hear it from someonw who has these machines side by side :)

Lisa, do you (or anyone else here) know of a laptop feature database site that would allow someone to select features they desire (SSD, 16GB RAM, Thuderbolt 3, Core i7, 15" FHD, etc.) and get a list of laptop models that have all of them? Although sites like Amazon do allow you to select some features, not all of the ones that interest me are included. Also, they only list what they sell. Your videos are my favorite reviews. Been waiting for this video for a while. Hope this becomes an annual kind of comparison video between these 3-4 types of laptops. I own a Lenovo X1 Yoga Gen 2, and the OLED WQHD screen is fantastic, but the battery life dies within 3.5 - 4 hours once you are past 600 recharge cycles, and average screen brightness of 75%. I suspect this is why the X1 Yoga Gen 3 returned to the LCD technology and forsook OLED. Right now I'm either in the market to try getting another X1 Yoga Gen 3, or I might spring for a T480, I haven't decided yet. Lisa, do you think you can review some mobile battery banks that have the voltage and wattage output that can safely recharge these kinds of laptops according to Lenovo's specifications? I know mophie, anker, ravpower, and aukey, boast portable power banks with wall outlet plugs, but am unsure if they work for all these sorts of laptops with Thunderbolt 3 USB-C devices.

This is why we need laptops with removable batteries, because it is so easy to replace a failing battery. However, it isn't that hard to crack open the case and replace the battery. Unlike that garbage from Apple and Microsoft, Thinkpad does design for fixability and it puts its service manuals online.

Hey Lisa, any chance you'll be checking out the E480 ThinkPad with AMD graphics? Looking at getting one for CAD. Seems like good value but as others have said, without your stamp of approval I'm reluctant to pull the trigger!

The T480 is on the Lenovo site for a measly $700. The T480S is $750 and the X1 Carbon Gen 6 is $1,200
