Wow! Most amazing flying anything I have ever seen in my life! Delmar brought his GeeBee to KAWO for a demonstration and I got to get up close to look at it. I looked over at the man next to me and it was Delmar Benjamin. I Introduced myself and said, 'I have to tell you: that thing scares the bejeezus out of me just looking at it.' He said, 'Me too.' I don't think he was kidding.

It was an amazingly radical design for its day, and way ahead of its time. However, that also made it very, very touchy to fly, and very dangerous for a whole variety of reasons that weren't known in the 1930s (hint: aerodynamic flutter).

Great video :) having said that to see the plane and Delmars exhibition in person was truly something else,i saw him at an airshow in windsor on. forget the yr, when i first saw the plane at the show sitting there i thought it was a giant toy,you would never think it could possibly fly ,the video doesn't really give an idea of just how tiny the wings are,they are like an after thought about the same size as a sheet of plywood, the engine is huge an then you have a tiny bubble at the rudder where the pilot sits, it is totaly unbelievable to think it would fly, then Delmar gets in takes off an soon he was flying upside down 20 feet above the runway at well over 200 mph , it was the coolist thing i have ever seen, it was like a cartoon come to life that you are standing watching an one of the characters in :)

On one hand, I'm sad the Gee Bee was retired and I didn't get to see her fly. On the other hand, I'm glad Delmar chose not to take any more risks with the bird. A flying coffin. Even Jimmy Doolittle barely survived this death trap. The Gee Bee is clearly a thing of the past and is best kept on the ground.
@goingtoscotland8 жыл бұрын
+Kaputt Good thing Delmar Benjamin didn't agree. His displays were proof positive that, while certainly a difficult aircraft to handle, in the hands of a skilled pilot it was perfectly safe. He flew the airshow circuit for 10+ years in this aircraft without any major mishaps. Every major mishap the R-1 and R-2 had were caused by pilot error. The final accident the R-1 had was after it was purchased from the Granvilles and modified with a larger fuel tank aft of the aircraft's designed CG. By the way, Doolittle had nothing but complimentary things to say about the Gee Bee R-1 with which he won the Thompson Trophy. Next time perhaps you'll educate yourself or at least hold your breath when you feel like making an ignorant statement.

The Gee Bee aircraft where never intended to be aerobatics, or low speed aircraft. They where ment to go fast. It was all about putting THE most powerful engine possible on THE smallest, most lightweight airframe possible. They only carried 30 or 40 gallons of fuel. Minimal instrumentation. And all of the balls a pilot could fit in his trousers.
@ScaleJetFred6 жыл бұрын
This one flew in the 21st century and by law had to carry relevant instruments and fuel for cross country transfer to the next exhibition.

How on earth could the pilot see anything?
@ScaleJetFred Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the visit to ScaleJetFred Chester! The answer is: not enough as I recorded before this video! See for yourself: hen he unknown to all landed without previously visiting this runway, he would not have been able to see that the concrete at the beginning of this runway is sticking out of the grass by app 30 cm. He intended to Touch down at the very beginning of this short runway. But then.....see it for yourself on this video I also recorded: Video link kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqa9daCgZ7aojpo Greetings from Dublin Ireland, Fred

WHY do air show announcers think they need to fill every second with inane chatter rather than letting people simply enjoy the sound of airplanes and engines??? They can blather at us any old time, but these are the only times when average people can hear the sounds of the past in person. So air show announcers: Go away and leave us alone!

What happened?
@ScaleJetFred4 жыл бұрын
Hi ash smitty! The runway is on top of a hill. To keep the Rw reasonably level and as long as possible the end of the concrete is sticking out - not level with the gras. The pilot landed without knowing this and the left side of the U/C hit this edge! This incredible pilot managed to keep the GeeBee from turning over or diverting from the straight line! Som Pilot!!! Regards Fred (ScaleJetFred) channel

ScaleJetFred Mate, THANKYOU so very much for the reply. Absolutely agree, amazing pilot. And to have over 1600 hours in this type of aircraft is remarkable. The Gee bee will ground loop just by looking at it. 😅

What music is this
@ScaleJetFred5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mustang 4-6! The musik is taken from the list of KZbin free available. They have an large number of different postings to be used free of charge and without license hunters nasty methods of getting payed for seconds of mucic on your video, despite it is only part of the video recording in the background.After being stung a number of times I followed KZbins advise and added from their list free melody's I thought suitable for the video... Thanks for the visit too my channel! You can visit my KZbin channel by clicking on the blue "ScaleJetFred" on top of this, my message and select from 135 postings! Not too many crashes mixed in.

You don't "fly" a Gee Bee. You just constantly keep it from crashing.

Yes Martin Carena-Santiago! If you look and view my other posting of this GeeBee flying you will see that Delmar Benjamin just about prevented a serious crash - hence the missing wheel cover on the left wheel!
