the delorean was ahead of it's time in style and construction. had he waited until maybe 1984 for the economy to improve and attitudes to change it likely would have been a success. unfortunately the British wanted the unemployment problem solved as soon as possible and delorean could not have known the economy would be down when the product finally launched.

For the record the Delorean was never a blunder. It was competition to various other heavy automakers. GM and Chrysler specifically were threatened by Delorean Ford didn't really give a shit. It was also a new type of car so flaws were given. Fast forward to 2014 and the cars have proven to be decent vehicles over the years thanks to a new Delorean motor company and owners. No nothing was really wrong with the vehicles they were just average pretty good sport cars that suffered from cruel Auto industry competition and politics

It was a massive blunder. The first 200 production cars were rebuilt completely in the USA at 400hrs a piece. Quite a number when it took only 50hrs to build on-line! It had a hideously underpowered engine giving it 0-60mph times of 10 seconds... Hardly a sports car. The Ford Cortina brakes on the car were nothing special either. In short, the car was rushed to production and short cuts were made. It's still and incredible effort however. To actually have built a plant from scratch in Ireland and mass produce a stainless steel body car, was an amazing achievement essentially driven by one man.

I actually thought the car was pretty cool when I was a kid. I wrote to John Delorean and he wrote a letter back to me. I also have a couple of the brochures including the one where they offered three colors. The red was the nicest, but I had no idea how to clean it. I wrote to a number of automakers, designers and CEO's. I put one of my brochures on the inside of my locker at school and somebody broke into I and stole it.

Anyone who says the DeLorean runs like shit, or that they are not true sports cars have NEVER owned a DeLorean. I have one, and it runs beautifully, and while it doesn't have the power of a Ferrari or Porsche, it still has great pickup. It was built for cruising, not speeding! Besides all that...People who say that miss the point entirely. EVERYONE knows the DeLorean when they see it!!!!!

If I know politics in the USA I would guess that when the people who decide what flys and what dies asked for their unfair share and John being an honest business man who believed things could happen without greasing the palms of greasy polititions....he soon learned the ugly truth and they did everything possible to make sure he went down with the ship and then still tried to frame him up on more trumped up charges and thank God for their sloppy performance and under estimating his ability to sway a jury towards truth he atleast avoided prison :(

I seriously think that John stuffed up in upping the workforce. What he should have done was invest in reversing the dash and either make, or convert already built cars into RHD cars. At least that way he could export some of those masses to the UK, Japan, Australia and other developed nations that drive on the other side of the road. He put all his eggs in one basket and that is what failed him. He could have shipped those already built cars to Europe too.
@bsklasika7 жыл бұрын
he gave jobs to these bums who should never be even considered as work-force in such high technological facilities, he put all his money and health in such a risk and made so many people happy. and when it all went down these bums who had nothing before he came - turned against him. and the only blunder about DeLorean was made by British Government. they did not do any type of research, did not do any checking, they trusted only on John's idea and ability to sell it. now you can do that with your private money and be investor, but the idea of government means that you have right people in right places to do right things. yet its so often that we see that because of Government's involvement so many countries have so much things going wrong. embarrassing.

exactly, i recently drove one, and my dad said that it is no good, until we went for a ride. it had excellent pick up, and it cruised like it was on a cloud. it was also a stick shift, and i must say, it was the easiest car to drive with stick. every other time, i killed the car, but the DeLorean never died on me.
