Delta 6 inch jointer restoration. Quick and easy rust removal. Well really I just sanded some rust off of some metal. But I made this video of me restoring this delta 6” jointer so that people can see that although a woodworking or any tool that looks like junk can usually be restored and brought back to life. This rusted delta jointer is still a very useful woodworking tool. It had just been neglected. You can find a lot of the woodworking tools you need fairly cheap online if your willing to put in the work to restore them. I enjoyed watching this rusted over delta jointer transform into a great running woodworking tool. Tool restoration is a very rewarding process and at the end of it I was left with a Delta Jointer I never thought I would be able to afford.
TEXAS CANVAS WARES (shop apron)
If you liked the shop apron, made by Texas Canvas Wares, I was wearing during the video you can get one at either of the links below. Neither of these links are affiliate links. So I have nothing to gain by recommending it as a good buy. This is a well made, quality apron, at an affordable price.

I just picked up the same model, same price too!. Same condition as well. I am using Rustoleum's rust remover. Saves on sandpaper and is gentle on the top. So far it is looking good!

They make a "naval jelly" which if i remember correctly is basically a gooey phosphoric acid..... works great esp for large pieces and is fast but i hate using it due to the smell. The vapor even bothers my eyes sometimes

My table saw had a lot of surface rust when I got it, but I first just sprayed it down with wd-40 then put a red scotch-brite pad on the table and sat my random orbital sander down on top of it and went to town on it. It took the better part of a Saturday afternoon but it eventually shined up enough that I then just put a well worn 120 grit used sanding disc on the sander and finished shining it up with that. Afterwards I just put a coat of Johnson wax on it and it has remained in good shape since.

Its not bad. Changing knives can be tough but not impossible. That is an area tho where more modern jointers outshine older ones like this. Give and take

Picked up a rusty version of this exact unit from someone off FB marketplace for a song. Weirdly the brand name was ground off the front plate and back tag. No idea why. Glad I know I got a Delta now. 😀

Hey Brad. I just picked up a Delta 37-190C. I got it for free. So I'm kinda doing the same thing as you just did. The thing works great but I'll probably put some new knives in next week. Very happy with the deal I scored. :-))

I liked it. I ended up selling it for $235 and buying a ridgid for $200.... one thing I learned is newer jointers are much easier to set up after installing new knives. But once u get urs set up, you’ll enjoy it 👍🏼

Great video thanks brother. I like the old Delta. I had a 9 inch table saw years ago and got rid of it just because. I have a Craftsman joiner I hate it. I don't use it much. They make a jig for the blade swap. Great job not much different than what I do. Keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks again brother
@BradsWorkbench
@BradsWorkbench 5 жыл бұрын
Yea, even after the video the blades still weren’t good enough so I ended up making my own jig out of some scrap cherry and magnets that I epoxied in. Basically just copied the jointer pal that is like $50 on amazon. To hell with that lol

I have been looking for a deal like that since you bought it. Maybe the spring will bring better luck. I like how you took your time instead of grabbing the wire brush like a lot of people would. Then you have too much material that was removed for sure.
@BradsWorkbench
@BradsWorkbench 5 жыл бұрын
Yea, I was pretty worried about removing too much and then the tables having big valleys. But theirs many out there that would say I shouldn’t have even used an orbital at all. 1000 ways to skin a goat

Just picked up a 1950’s vintage Delta jointer for real cheap. The rust was worse then this one, but it looks great now. I just used white vinegar, it dissolves the rust. I also used course steel wool and will finish up with 500 grit sandpaper.

I had one of these, but the tables weren't coplanar and there was no adjustment that could bring it into spec. I ended up selling it for 50 bucks. I told the guy who bought it that if all else failed, it was probably worth that much in scrap metal alone.

hey i saw this being sold and wanted to buy it but not sure it has dust collection or away to catch the shavings like other models
@BradsWorkbench
@BradsWorkbench 4 жыл бұрын
I cant remember for sure but I believe the shavings just fell underneath. I will warn you theres no adjustments on the outfeed table or screw adjustments in the cutter head cylinder like more modern jointers which makes setting the knives a real pain. If its $100 or less I would say consider it. Otherwise hold out for something a little newer

Hey Brad, I just picked up the same model at an auction. Very clean. Only concern is the wiring inside was disconnected. Having a hard time looming for a wire assembly guide. Any chance you can snap a quick photo of your jointer motor wiring?

can you explain the blade adjustment that was hard ?
@BradsWorkbench
@BradsWorkbench 4 жыл бұрын
Well in general changing knives is a pain. Most things are a pain when dealing in the thousandth of a inch. But this jointer did not have an adjustable outfeed table or any adjustment screws under the blade. Its doable but not easy. The ridgid jointer i have now has the adjustment screws and outfeed table and i can get the knives set in about an hour.

@BradsWorkbench

If you want the original its just gonna take time. There are groups on Facebook but still a long shot. Ebay will be expensive.... fb marketplace another long shot but worth checking over the long term. The easiest way would be to cut a notch in a flat board to go over the blade and clamp right to the table.

Hi Brad, I just bought the same model, not as good deal as yours,!!! It was mounted on a stand, I dissembled it for transport and now the motor is hanging at the bottom, I cant figure how to replace it where it should go.....any idea that could help??? Thanks
@BradsWorkbench
@BradsWorkbench 3 жыл бұрын
Well it is belt drivin but unfortunately I can remember where the motor mounts were exactly. I only used this jointer for about 6 months before I can across another good deal on a larger one. I cant say 100% on this particular machine but I know many others use the weight of the motor itself as an auto belt tensioner of sorts. I know that probably doesnt help a ton. There are some good groups for tool restoration on facebook that might be able to give more help and you'd be able to show pics of exactly what you're dealing with.
@onetakeonlycom

@@BradsWorkbench thanks, I’ll check, maybe that the motor should be lower then the tool instead of my idea that the motor should go completely inside the casing.
