Because of her registration, she was referred to as “The 747 From Hell”. She was believed to be the oldest flying -400 in the world, until her recent retirement.
With nearly 30 years of usage, this beauty was delivered to Northwest Airlines in August 1989.

I was the Captain on that flight .I did the landing in LAX. . Hand flown, no autopilot. (DTW-LAX) didn’t know it at the time but it was my last time flying a 747. Delta retired the fleet a few weeks later I was a Captain on NWA and then Delta’s ( airlines merged in 2009) B747-400 from 1999 to 2017 when the plane was retired. I have just under 8000 hours as a Captain on the plane. What a plane…elegant and every one just loved to fly it. Flight deck had three rows of seats. Super comfortable. Nice bed room just behind the flight deck for the pilots on break. The best thing about the interior of the plane: Lots and lots of room for passengers to stroll around. Bathrooms were large…and plenty of them. Overhead bins always and I mean always had plenty of room for passenger carry on luggage. The passenger upper deck was just pure luxury.14 passenger seats. (Was certified for 60 coach seats) 2 bathrooms. 2 Flight Attendants. And upstairs…away from any hulabalu. My most memorable flights: We ferried the plane (just four pilots…no crew, no flight attendants and no passengers…well …had just one passenger…my youngest daughter Elena) from Singapore where it had undergone maintenance to Anchorage and then Detroit. My daughter loved it.The only passenger on a 747-400. Another flight : From LAX to Victorville Ca.Another ferry flight. Brought my son Andrew along. He got to log some 747-400 time! I put him in the right seat! The planes were painted in Delta colors at Victorville after the NWA- DL merger. I often flew the Detroit- Shanghai route. We normally burned about 51,000 gallons of fuel. For that one flight. We often flew within 20 miles of the North Pole. As I flew that route for so many years, I could see the effects of global warming. My first years, the North Pole was always frozen solid, even in August. At the end of my career the ice would be broken in August. We always looked for Santa but never saw him🤣 I flew the first Delta 747 on the JFK Tel Aviv route and the very last JFK TLV flight by a Delta 747 My last flight on the 747 was in Dec 2017. DTW to LAX.We brought the plane empty there for a 747 farewell party. I flew the 777 after the 747 at Delta. Definitely a downgrade. Like going from a Rolls Royce to a Volkswagen.

All of Delta's 747 are former Northwest planes which were the best choice for the long trans pacific flights. I flew them many times between Detroit and Japan then on to Manila. In my life there have been three aircraft, all from Boeing that have impressed me. My first ever international flight, a Pan American 707 next, the 747 on different carriers, KLM, Northwest, Sabena, El Al, Air France, and Philippine Airlines. Finally, the 777, most spacious twin engine plane in the sky. I hope that Boeing comes out with something fantastic in the future.

I cant imagine for a video of this type that its a reflection of your performance, as its just not type of video. Its a sentimental and factual piece, not an Airshow recording type of thing if you follow. More like its the usual silly people that like to down thumb anything good. I see it all the time on You Tube videos and my mind never ceases to boggle on the Troll and juvenile negative comments. But I am happy that you benefit numerically from responses to your channel. I think you made a very good video. If I have any criticism, I’ll just say that it would’ve been better to conduct a formal interview with the first officer. You asked some good questions and he had some interesting answers. But you said ‘Wow,’ when you had an opportunity to follow up with further facts. Just my two cents! For the record, my first 747 flight was in 1974, latest was 2016. You can find my 747 landing on Newark’s 6000 foot short crosswind runway - it’s on KZbin, but the video quality is crap (I used my iPhone). So I could use some constructive advice too :)

Flown on a 747-400 a couple of times now. Smoothest airliner I've ever been on. Both during flight and incredibly during the taxiing on the ground. On my first ever 747 flight I was busy queuing up my videos on the IFE and didn't notice we had actually pushed back and were headed for the runway!

I've been a Captain on the 747 for over 20 years..both the “generic 100 & 200” and the -400 for Northwest and now Delta. So sad to see the Queen taken to the bone yard and chopped up for scrap. Best aircraft I’ve ever flown by far...and easy to fly. Miss her already.

Master Warning sir I respect your career and I respect that you flown a 747 im 46 yrs old and I have been to Honolulu round 8 times but I've always wanted to take a747 there and to know they are scrapping this god of the sky brings me to tears i think each Airline should save one and use it my heart and soul goes to each person in the aviation industry no matter what your job is some people in life that was their dream but never got it if I just had one small button from the cockpit I would wear it as a necklace as a souvenir I usually fly to Honolulu once a year but never had the chance to take the king of the sky and my hat comes off to all is staph that has been keeping the 747 in the air and I salute each one of you

Master Warning sir(or madam)...a question I've always wanted to ask a 747 captain...do you get a thrill every time you throttle up those 4 huge engines? Can you describe the feeling?

David Cole it is exactly that-a thrilling experience. You evenly push the throttles together-to 1.1 EPR and let the engines stabilize-then push the auto throttle push button on the throttle and the power automatically advances to takeoff EPR. Depending on the weight and outside temperature-varies the acceleration felt. Imagine about 440 tons or 850,000 pounds at takeoff and 40 minutes later Your over 5 miles up and traveling Mach .85 or 85% the speed of sound with 420 other people with you.

What a great airplane the 747 was. Recently retired in May 2018 after 38 yrs of flying from American had the pleasure of flying the 74 with TWA. It was truly a wonderful a/c to fly but with the new advancements in aviation Im looking forward to the future.

I flew a Northwest 747-400 from Detroit to Tokyo-Narita back in April 1990. I was relocating to Korea (work related). I remember then that the plane was new. The flight was 13.5 hours to Tokyo. Wonderful experience on the 747. As I see all these ex-Northwest now Delta 747s retire, I wish I had recorded which one I flew on the initial flight to Tokyo and the final leg to Seoul. Could very well have been this one. At that time I flew to Tokyo, NW only had 3 or 4 of the -400s I believe. I flew NW and their -400's many many times back and forth across the pacific during my 4 years in Korea. I most likely flew on this one at one time. I love the 747. So sad to see it leave passenger service.

Flew Pan Am 707's then 747's yearly to Honolulu from 1963 to ?2000. In 1974 another nurse and I treated ourselves to PanAm 747 to Honolulu 1st class and ate lunch upstairs with Fresh flowers on our table and lots of pampering by flight attendants. They thought we were wealthy actresses even though we told them no, just hard working RN's. Someday I'll tell you about my ride in a P51 Mustang out of Chino, CA.

I remember when QANTAS flew their first 400 from London to Sydney NON-STOP. They needed special permission from the Russians to fly over their airspace and the crew sent their luggage on a different flight just to save weight. Got them into the Guinness record book too.

Thank you for sharing this touching tribute to our beloved queen of the skies Ryan...I find is so hard to hold back the tears...As Dana noted so eloquently, this iconic, graceful aircraft is filled with many stories, excitement, and the infinite promise of adventure that comes with the lure of the world..That is why it holds such a special place in our hearts and ALWAYS will... How can one forget the throttle and the thrill of the sound of those 4 engines during takeoff?!...not to mention the beautiful vision of the QUEEN gracefully coming in for a landing..So many MANY wonderful memories.. Yet one question remains unanswered...Why? Why didn't the US carriers keep using them? Operation wise, they were dependable and scored high on the customer satisfaction side. However, if it boiled down to 'cost' then why not at least retire her with DIGNITY in a museum, or even back to Boeing HQ, instead of scrapping her for parts!? I was so down when I learned of the fate of the old PAA clippers...Why can't we learn from that? Why is everything about cost and $$ in this life? Damn...Am I glad I wasn't a part of this "Celebration"; more like a funeral of a majestic bird that represented open skies, dreams and freedom...

This particular aircraft was approaching thirty years of active service for Northwest & Delta. Most 'modern' airliners are only expected to fly in passenger service for about twenty years. In some cases, like with the A380, six aircraft have already been stored, and keep in mind, the earliest models only date back to 2005, and weren't even introduced into airline service until relatively recently, in late 2007. By comparison, the earliest 747-400's (including the one in the video), date all the way back to the late 1980's.

Northwest was launch customer for the 747-400 with orders for 10 jets delivered in 1989-1990. The planes were numbered NW661-670. NW661 was not the 1st 747-400 delivered to Northwest although it was the 1st one Boeing produced. Boeing held onto it for a while. After flying some domestic routes the planes were 1st assigned to NW17/18 - JFK-NRT.

You have one hell of a great flying history! The 727 (as a non-pilot) was the greatest airliner ever built, in my opinion. I remember talking to seven-two pilots about the limited angle of attack being a factor on landing, which lead to some rough touchdowns. Then to go out on top in a seven-four is legendary. yes on the stretch three holer you had to watch the high angle at touchdown...you basically would slam the mains into the concrete..the short version , we called it the "stubby" was easy....same on the stretch DC8 61 and 63

yes indeed; well, I taught a lot of new guys how to land the three holer correctly ... now, that pertains only to the stretched version. The short -100 (we called the stubby) was straight forward; the stretched version was different. I used to gently push forward stick once the descent was halted; this raised the tail , then slowly milk off thrust and wait...usually I could get them on good. I used the same trick in the Stretch DC8-63 and 61 worked !!

MAURICE MOTON I did too back in the 90s. All the majors suck today less carriers to choose from and the best ones are gone to acquisitions and mergers. When I was at Northwest we got four brand new 747 400 to 1997. Those airplanes are good today 20 years is nothing for 747 400. Delta ruined the northwest pacific network and Northwest cargo by selling it off and they upended the hub at Narita. Japanese have never been happy with Delta. Much of this falls on old NW CEO Richard Anderson.

Einhander49 look at the long list of problems for the 787 and compere it to the a350, even right now air new Zealand has had to ground all their 787s and lease a heap of airbus aircraft off other airlines to replace them while they are repaired.
