So here we are, it's Halloween at last -- and so today we look at a game that has thoroughly grabbed my attention in recent years: the delightfully bleak game that is Delta Green The Roleplaying Game.
This game started life as an incredibly good supplement to Call of Cthulhu in 1997, winning numerous awards and widely considered one of the best CoC supplements ever written. Fast-forward to 2015, and Delta Green is revived as a new game in its own right, one based on the BRP framework but incorporating its own unique tweaks. The result is spectacular, and the game line has released not just these fantastic core books, but a series of outstanding supplements, adventure compilations, and outrageously good campaigns.
Having said that, this game is likely the bleakest Mythos game out there, and by quite a margin. 'Purist' Call of Cthulhu games can go pretty dark, but Delta Green one-ups them by showing not only your Agent's slow descent into madness, but having you roleplay the gradual implosion of your personal and family lives as well. The adventures and campaigns can go extremely dark as well; for an example, look no further than the most recent campaign release, God's Teeth, which is both wonderfully written and conceived and yet so chilling, so grotesque, that some players might simply not be able to cope at all with even the first chapter. Delta Green campaigns are the only ones that have legitimately creeped me out when simply reading through them.
So, while Delta Green is perhaps my favourite Lovecraftian game of the moment, due to its focussed setting reinforced by its mechanics, fantastic presentation, and diamond-hard nihilism, it's not necessarily a game for everyone. I'll unpack that a bit more in my next video, where I'll compare the Lovecraftian games we've looked at this month, and I'll try to explain why each of them might deserve a place on your shelf, depending on your group.
Happy Halloween, everyone! Stay safe out there, and if you see something Unnatural, try not to take it out on your Bonds, OK?

I do have a Discord, but it's just for friends and family at the moment, where I'm gradually introducing them to these various games 🙂 if there's interest I'd happily open a new/bigger one for the community!
