The real winner here is your audio filter. You need to get an affiliate link and send them this video as an ad. Literally cannot hear the airport behind you and it sounds like you just recorded a perfect voiceover.

For anyone else looking to switch - ask whatever airline you are switching to for a "miles challenge" or "status challenge". Tell them you would love to align with their company, but you need them to match your current status level with Delta. This technique works for hotel chains, car rental companies, airlines, and others.

Apparently the execs at Delta never read PT Barnum's books. Among other things he said "Never insult the rubes. If they get upset they won't come back." That's from the man who put up a big sign in his exhibits saying "this way to the egress!" and then charged them a second admission fee to get back in.

The issue was never just the changes; it was also the intention. Delta can walk back the changes (even though they haven't really), but they can't unshow their true colours. A breach of trust is extremely hard to recover from, regardless of the response afterwards. The reasoning is simple: the attempt at doing the wrong thing was either intentional or unintentional. The entity is therefore either "evil" or incompetent. If they are not willing to make changes to prevent more incidents AND issue costly signals to back up their commitment, this sort of thing is likely to happen again... In the context of Delta, this would mean a leadership change AND a legally binding commitment; neither of which they're willing to do.

Thanks for the heads up that Alaska Airlines flights are gonna be full all the time. At least from Seattle. For those of us in the 49th state, going between SEATAC and ANC, we'll probably still have a few open seats on flights.

Last week I was delayed on my delta fight because the Memphis crew couldn’t get a ride from the airport and when they arrived the baggage handlers had left. I got to LaGuardia to make my very tight connection with 3 others. 10pm last flight to Boston. They rebooked us on the app for the 6am at a different gate. So we ran there instead. Rebooked seat was not comfort + like my original. You’d think they would have called to hold. I should have stayed an extra day and gone direct on Jet Blue like I did on the way down.

Groveling to keep customers from kicking your can down the road is never a good thing. For those that decide to leave Delta, the competitor airlines should offer a frequent flyer match program. That would change the landscape of loyalty programs.

I think the biggest thing is there is so many airlines with great service and they all offer more or less the same, with Netflix it's the network effect in action, A lot of what people watch is Netflix Originals, so either you pay Netflix to watch their originals or you risk getting a love letter from some big legal firm when pirating their content. There is a great talk about enshittification that relates greatly to it, if I find it I will put name and link in a comment below.

I think its a great lesson to be learned for any service providor that even in the world of massive consolidation of services to a few companies, customers can still have an impact even if it is too little too late. And other service providors can benefit not from following the trend of the failing company but accepting the customers from that failing company and use that as a growth opportunity

I do wonder if the flights cancellation fees (I think it was ~$200) that were eliminated "forever" as Ed said at the beginning of covid will rear it's ugly head again soon. For me, the ecredit system is great and hope Delta doesn't touch it but if there's another revenue stream needed then the cancellation fee will be back for sure.

Agree, they backtracked a little, maybe their whole plan was to go PAST where they wanted to go, then pretend to "listen" to customers by backing down to where they ACTUALLY wanted to go. Whatever the case, I don't fly as much as you and I'm only Platinum, but maybe I should look at Alaska and the One World Alliance. Sadly, Delta flies more routes we fly than anyone else.
@redtela

Re your point on "50 USD for the sky club" - I fly a fair bit from Manchester UK, whenever possible, I pay 42 USD or thereabouts for the general access lounge at that airport. Why? I've not seen a cheaper deal, and for the ability to get a laptop out, do some work, get some "free" breakfast - and more importantly, LEAVE the laptop on the table while I'm getting food/drink, knowing it won't be touched... that makes it worth it. Sure, I don't get 42 USD worth of food or drink. But I do get space/time away from the masses, some comfort to work in, free wifi (with VPN) - which I could also access sitting in the terminal - though it's better bandwidth in the lounge. I fly the same route often enough, that I don't need to look at the boards for gate timing info, I just set an alarm on my watch. Without fail, the gate is announced when the alarm goes off, so I pack up work, walk to the gate, and sit waiting to board (I like boarding last). I get on the plane, wait until the seatbelt light goes off, and get the laptop out to do more work. By the time I land at destination, I've basically done a whole days worth of work. THAT is why the 42 USD for the lounge is worth it - for me.

I'd check myself into a ward before flying often enough to worry about this. I dunno how you can stand it. When I fly, I'm only concerned with getting through the ordeal. I'm not even thinking about snacks or cocktails.

They don't mess around, it works great.

Appreciate your opinion and you are much more of a Delta flyer than me, but I think you are missing the credit card angle. I think Delta has made it easier to get status now with the 2500 point head starts they have added to their CC's, now gets your closer so that when adding flying and spending it is not that different or even easier now. But I agree if you are generally against the credit cards, there is not much good to find in the changes. I don't think Alaska is going to be any better with their limited footprint but maybe they have the flights you are looking for from Seattle. Again, awesome videos and I always like those not afraid to give a real opinion.

Capitalism means the provider of a good decides the terms they offer and the consumer gets the option to say "F*** no!" Unless Delta is in breach of contract, I see nothing wrong (also likely nothing smart) in them changing terms moving forward. If the consumer doesn't like the new terms they can do without or change vendor (I actually _prefer_ Alaska), that's why an anti-monopoly is one of my few unconditional political opinions. I wonder if someone pushed some numbers and realized that, even as a loss leader, the program was loosing money and they are trying to chase off enough members so they can kill it as "not very popular". If that's the case, just say that!
