Thanks to MacDac for aft fuselage mounted engines on the DC-9, MD80 series, MD90 and the B717 that allows us engine sound nerds to have audio/video to soothe our souls. Beautiful sound of the V2525(28?) of this flight!

4:48-6:10 is one of the best engine sounds I've heard. The way the engine starts up while the other spools up to taxi. It's so melodic, sounds like a chord progression of some sort. I wish I had flown this plane some more.

It's fascinating. Those engines turning so fast and such a machine going so quickly. Takes a lot of training with a certified aircraft mechanic to work on one system of many on these. There is a whole mentorship and training program that goes into making sure they are maintained to be safe. The rest is left to the pilots...

Can anyone explain that loud tone in the PA sound system when the flight attendant has the mic keyed up? I've noticed the same tone on pretty much all aircraft and it's always the same pitch. Just wondering what the cause is. You don't hear that tone in other PA systems, like in stores for example.
@Elhombresombra
@Elhombresombra 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's an interference (technically called "crosstalk") from the 400 Hz AC power bus of the airplane onto the PA system. It's not the same on all aircraft, and it may change considerably even between different machines of the same make and model. It depends on how the 400 Hz AC cables can couple (crosstalk) onto the 28 VDC or the audio signal cables. There is also another possibility: if the PA system is powered from the AC bus, the filter after the rectifier in the power supply section may be defective (or may have lost some efficiency over time) and so you would find an audible ripple on the audio lines. The same 400 Hz tone could often be heard over VHF radio communications, essentially for the same reason.
@BadDriversOfNapa
@BadDriversOfNapa 8 жыл бұрын
Elhombresombra Very interesting. I figured it was some sort of interference, but didn't know the specifics.
@Elhombresombra
@Elhombresombra 8 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. There is another instance, even more interesting, where an interference may become noticeable over the PA system. Go to the video umfxwirWgPA. There are two points, at times 12" and 39", where you car hear (in addition to the 400 Hz interference) a siren-like tone (sort of whoop-whoop). That is the interference produced by the ignition exciter during the startup sequence of the engine(s). The base circuit of the high voltage generator is a self oscillating voltage booster, the same type used in electronic flashes for cameras. You know, when the flash is charging you hear a whistle becoming more and more high-pitched as the capacitor builds up voltage. Here is the same. The instant when the tone changes abruptly from high to low pitch is when the ignitors fire (capacitor is discharged). On some planes it could even be heard over VHF transmissions, when "Continuous Relight" is selected and the ignition units are firing all the time.
@BadDriversOfNapa
@BadDriversOfNapa 8 жыл бұрын
Elhombresombra Interesting. I have heard that before in other MD tail-mounted engine aircraft where the videographer was sitting in proximity to the engine during the startup process.

what seat were you in on this flight? I really want to fly one of these. I've flown an MD-88 before to Atlanta on Delta a few years ago from Milwaukee, but I've never been on an MD-90. I know that MKE-MSP serves the MD-90 currently.

36 has 2 windows while allowing you to look into the engine. 37 just has 1 window, however not misaligned. though with the engine view of 37, it doesn't block the window , but you can't really see inside of it much. I'd go with 36. trust me, you'll be glad you chose 36.
