The Delta Works is what happened when the dutch became tired of coastal flooding and did something permanent about it. It took decades but the results are IMO worth it. One reason the dutch have been able to do this is the existance of water (management) boards, which are independently elected and funded by their own separate taxes. Tjese taxes didn't (and don't) fund all water management but provide a basis which the government can allocate additional funds to.

You know that the Dutch people helped New Orleans when it was flooded, and helped with a lot of issues around the world. Greetings, Roelof

We Dutch also made plans for the US southern and eastern coast and offered them for free, engineers included to then-president Bush. He of course refused but it would have prevented the damage from Katrina.

A river delta is a landform shaped like a triangle, created by the deposition of sediment that is carried by a river and enters slower-moving or stagnant water. This occurs when a river enters an ocean, sea, estuary, lake, reservoir, or (more rarely) another river that cannot carry away the supplied sediment. It is so named because its triangle shape resembles the Greek letter Delta. The size and shape of a delta are controlled by the balance between watershed processes that supply sediment, and receiving basin processes that redistribute, sequester, and export that sediment. The size, geometry, and location of the receiving basin also plays an important role in delta evolution. River deltas are important in human civilization, as they are major agricultural production centers and population centers. They can provide coastline defense and can impact drinking water supply. They are also ecologically important, with different species' assemblages depending on their landscape position. On geologic timescales, they are also important carbon sinks.

The Deltaworks were realized at tremendous costs, howeverit provided the Dutch with excellent knowlegde on how to carry out these projects. Watermanagement and engeneering now also is a Dutch export product. Numerous big industires have grown out of the experience. The Dutch have reclamed land all over the world, build an artificial island in Asia, to provide space foe an entire airport. So knowledge gained pays out. It is like space exploration, it is very expensive, but look what technologies have emerged from it, I really like these reactions. Thanks from a proud Dutchmen,

Its bizar you see so much flooding around the world but very few country's will do something about it. You do not need high tech equipment only reletive simple things people money and time. It took us almost a century to complete . but we did complete it and there are no more floods if you look at a elivation map of holland you would see why it was needed .

And we've been doing things like building dykes since the Middle Ages. Hell, it's one way the Dutch managed to work together when The Netherlands wasn't even remotely a single country. Local lords who do actually fight wars against one another had to work together to make sure they didn't all drown. Dykes, polders, it's all pretty simple technology and doesn't even have to be that expensive. Dunes keep a large part of our coast save and just making sure there's enough vegetation on them helps a lot.

I'm not proud of achievements of my country (I didn't do anything towards these achievements), but it's one of the few times in our history that a long term solution has been implemented. That alone makes it special for me. I wish politicians around the world would have a bit more of a long term vision, instead of only filling their bank accounts.

People are often confused about it. It's not the only mistake he made. The country is called The Netherlands, Holland are just two provinces. And Lelystad isn't the largest city of Flevoland, that would be Almere witch is about two and a half times bigger and still growing.

But it is. The fact the Netherlands has slowly lost land in major flooding events from the early middle ages until we started to reclaim and protect land, is very much a function of a slow but steady sea level rise. And in the millennia before a recorded history of the Netherlands existed, a large part of the North Sea used to be land (we call it ‘Doggerland’ nowadays, look it up). This gradual end relentless sea level rise is caused by a changing climate associated with the end of the last ice age. Which meant that temperatures rose, ice melted while land was subsiding. This is still an ongoing proces which is worsened by the onset of anthropogenic climate change in the last few centuries.

@@StefanVeenstra we’ve deforested almost half of the planet, burnt millions of years worth of fossilized carbon, created a mass extinction that might include ourselves (top predators are specifically vulnerable) and that’s all you can say? Of course we need to adapt: it’s either that or perish. But there are still several ways to do this, very important choices to be made. The very first choice is acknowledging we are not passive bystanders.

@@StefanVeenstra you said quote:"Climate has always been changing, there's no stopping it." with your logic you could say that ppl are always dying, there´s no stopping it. thats why we should allow murder. or how about this: ppl will be always sick, there´s nothing stopping it. So why do we make medicine? only because something will always be there doesnt mean you cant make it better, especially when you made it worse over hundreds of years.....

Ah, so this is why the Afsluitdijk needed to have pumps installed instead of the previous Lorentz locks, because the water levels aren'r changing. The Lorentz locks are no longer effective enough due to the sea level rise. Outflow from the IJsselmeer was no longer fast enough to keep up, creating risk in the surrounding areas.
