DELTARUNE Chapter 1: The Story of Toby Fox and the Impossible Sequel

When Toby Fox releases a new game, the world stops and takes notice.
We weren't planning on making this video until this afternoon. When Deltarune was first revealed to the world, we thought, "huh, that's cool, but it'll be a while before there's enough information to do a video about it".
Toby Fox is normally a pretty secretive guy, so we were hardly expecting an in-depth interview as we've managed for Temmie Chang and Magnolia Porter.
But, Toby clearly had something he needed to get off his chest, as he provided an excellent insight into his thought process while developing the game in the form of a lengthy blog post on Twitlonger.
Once we saw that, we knew we had to cover Deltarune as a priority.
We had been planning on a video about Stewart Copeland and his work on Spyro the Dragon, but we'll have to cover that next week instead.
There's just one problem: BretonStripes is currently sick. You'll probably be able to tell from her voice.
So she struggled through recording the audio, and Kotor blitzed through getting all the pictures done. Apologies for areas where things are a little too static, but we wanted to get this out while it was still relevant.
Of course, what we weren't expecting was for Toby Fox to keep talking about Deltarune, and bringing us some additional fun information on Twitter even after we'd recorded this. We were tempted to go back and record a little extra about the work of musician Laura Shigihara (who we've spoken to about possibly doing an interview in future, but we haven't had the time to talk with her recently), but in the end, we figured we'd have to leave it out of this video. BretonStripes is tired, and there's no sense squeezing in every piece of information when Toby will probably reveal more in the near future.
So, this might well be a two-parter, although we don't want to commit to a second part just yet.
For all those who saw the (still as-yet unedited) description for our last video: thank you for your concern and best wishes, we really appreciate it. This has been a really hard week for personal reasons that we don't feel comfortable sharing just yet, but we want you to know that your kind support means a lot to us.
In other news, Kotor is still trying to find a place in the channel, and our latest poll suggests that you basically don't want to hear much from him anymore. So we're not sure what to do, but he has too much time on his hands at the moment and he's starved for creative projects. He'll figure something out.
Anyway, we love you very much. Hopefully you've enjoyed Deltarune, and hopefully it hasn't completely wrecked your computer. GameMaker Studio 2 apparently has some quirks, to say the least.
Just be warned that if you're on Windows and you're trying to uninstall Deltarune, you need to do so VERY CAREFULLY.

I appreciate toby fox so much. He didn’t have to make delta rune. He didn’t have to make more main characters. He didn’t have to make a more complicated battle system. He didn’t have to make a more intertwining story. He didn’t have to make another game. But he still did. I fell in love with undertale 3 years ago and to this day I still listen to the music of it. Even now I get chills down my spine when I hear the music or remember my first time experiencing it. I’m excited to when delta rune will be finished and I already know it will be beyond awesome

He didn't have to do anything really but he loves games so much that it just made sense to do that, but he knows how in over his head he is as the fact remains that this is a hard thing to do on his own and he has to now hire others to help him and even then it may take a lot of time to finish Delta Rune as he acknowledges. Undertale took a few years and this one will go through a more similar but harder process.

It seems to Deconstruct the entire Premise & everything that made Undertale what it was; In a Way, It's sort of the Opposite, such as there being those who was the Viper to the Farmer in that Fable(Spade King = Viper; Farmer = The Fun Gang), Discarding the Created Vessel from the very beginning of the game; etc.

For this game, Toby realized the value of teamwork. He realized that just him programming and Temmie doing some art that he could not finish Deltarune, and there's a whole list of reasons why on his Twitter. It's amazing to see him grow as a person and a game creator. He can't do it alone. And if Undertale was a game created without a team, I can't wait to see what Deltarune brings.

Coming from Toby's own mouth (Well, he said it online, so maybe not mouth) Deltarune is not a sequel, nor prequel. Deltarune is its own game, the characters from Deltarune are their own characters with different back stories than the ones in Undertale. So, the Sans in Deltarune is a completely different character as the Sans in Undertale.

correct me if i am wrong but i am under the impression that Deltarune came first. it was his original idea and he created Undertale from concepts and elements of Deltarune as a test game. so Deltarune isn't a sequel, a prequel or an AU of Undertale. Undertale is an AU of Deltarune, it just so happened to be released before the original that it was based on.

I think he got a basic concept for Deltarune first, but maybe had been able to come up with fully fleshed out ideas for Undertale first, and worked more on that so it made sense to make that first. They're intertwined for sure, but only Toby can know which is the "original idea", if either of those even can be considered such.

For how hard he worked, Deltarune needs more respect. Me and my friend decided to do a group cosplay of Kris and Ralsei for halloween, thinking everyone understood. No one did. People either thought I was an ordinary teen with some sort of mental disorder, since my face looked like it was covered it ketchup, or just said "hey Chara!". People told my friend that he looked like a leaf, not a goat, and asked why he had a scarf. More people need to play Deltarune!

Okay I'm trying to imagine this possibly from his point of view, but think of it this way: You become a fan of a game series (EarthBound) that while the fanbase is small, you talk with a lot of cool folks online and at some point, end up making a name for yourself within that small fanbase when you release a rom hack online. A lot of folks within the community play it and enjoy it (especially the soundtrack) and later down the line, one of your friends is making a webcomic series (Homestuck) and wants your help with the music for it. Being great at making music already and wanting to help your friend out, you jump on it and again, despite the small fanbase, you still make some folks happy with your contribution. Then one day, you decide that you want to make your own original game from the ground-up, probably expecting fans from both the EarthBound community and the Homestuck communites to be the only ones interested in it. You get to work and decide to release a demo for your game, as well as launch a Kickstarter to help with funds. Probably not thinking too much about it, you call it a day and go to sleep. But you wake up the next morning, check out your Kickstarter to see what the progress of it is and to see what folks thought about your game, so far and well... you definitely got support and it seems that it's not just from the EarthBound and Homestuck communities, either. Long story short, you and a cool talented artist named Temmie Chang work together and release the game to critical and commercial success, even for an indie game. All that success was something you didn't see coming, the internet is showing tremendous love for it, etc. And at some point when everyone calms down, you want to make another game, but much bigger than your previous work while also trying to make fans of your previous work happy, but at the same time trying to keep their expectations in check because well, making two masterpieces in a row is easier said than done. In other words, I can imagine him feeling like "failure is something that I don't want to deal with. I have an idea for something with a lot of potential, but I don't want to screw it up."

Well, a strong foundation has already been built for Toby it looks like, so perhaps building a demo instead of the whole game was a really good idea. It helps to get started. I have a feeling he has the potential to finish it in maybe a year over the time of Undertale, maybe a few months, but nevertheless I'd understand if he took really long to finish it. After all I'm not a programmer, and Delta rune chapter 1 in my opinion is enough to last for years. So good luck to him

aww this was so sweet, thanks for making this, it's people like Toby and Scott Cawthon that put a smile on my face and makes my heart both happy and yet envious that they have taken the plunge all by them selves to create something that i enjoy, i have big game ideas too and one way or another i will make them, so for now while i'm figuring out what i need to do i hope Scott and Toby continue to create such wonderful and thought provoking games and i hope to join them on the road some time soon

Undertale will always be my favorite indie game (Asides from the iffy fanbase but im just a normal UT fan) his game went very popular to so many cosplays, music, fan games, fan art, to even figures and plushies undertale was the most popular indie game out there maybe even more popular than fnaf (Sorry fnaf fans) Deltarune will be a great game to be a great sequel for undertale

I think I might like Deltarune even more than Undertale. It's got my head spinning with theories. I love it and can't wait for more. (Especially if my current theory turns out to match Toby's plans. If that's the case then I think this game definitely will be better then Undertale.) The thing about Toby and making lightning strike twice. I don't know why but it made me imagine Toby standing in the middle of a thunderstorm, holding a lightning rod and standing on a spot where scorch marks from lightning forms the word Undertale. Scared, nervous and yet determined. (This could probably work as an analogy.) I wish Toby Fox all of the luck he'll need for Deltarune and I hope he doesn't give up on it.

i loved undertale gameplay it was funny,original, had obsession with the tracks to this day, some unexpected moments, some scary things and mysteries, it was just perfect undertale is in my heart forever, i love deltarune just slightly less only one thing to be complete for deltarune ( all the things i said about undertale here count for deltarune aswell ) it was.....Sans. im sorry, but i think sans has to be one of the best characters in video game history right next to sonic and ness. i loved his appearence in deltarune a lot. if sans would appear like a random guy on the street on the beggining had some dialogue with puns, that's what sans is about. then i would rate deltatune like undertale and i assure you that those game would be one of the best games that had ever hit gaming. end of communication.

It's hard to imagine what people have to go through to make things like this. I have tried to animate, and it was really bad. Even so, it was hard and took a long time. I eventually gave up. Something like a videogame, in which you have to code in the animation and not just make a singular line of movement, must take a long time. Not only does it take commitment, it take time. You don't even know if people will like your work, struggling to keep going as you hope it will be good, especially when people have high standards set for you. In otherwords, thank you, Toby. You have done so well. There's no way to express our gratitude.

Delta Rune is another brilliant creation by Toby Fox and this new game brought even MORE magic to the game, the characters, colour, battle mechanic, new worlds, music and fanart! I love the game. There are so many more secrets to explore and I'm glad to see that Toby kept on going through tough times. Beautiful video as always ❤

PSA: The uninstaller just deletes the folder it's contained in. It is very lazy, but as long as you are a sane individual that keeps each piece of software inside their own little folder instead of a psychopath that lumps an installation on top of the previous one in some junkyard of a common master folder you should be ok

@@kingchickenwing4887 Very obvious, he is aware that sometimes the fanbase can get pushy into throwing spoilers or telling what to do since day 1, so people who would find out about the game would get the chance to experience the game completely free of backseating and spoddle bois who spoil everything like what happenned with the whole Harry Potter drama back then (The whole snape killed dumbledoore thing being yelled at people on stores before they could even buy the book). For me it was a blessing since I also could enjoy Undertale before it became popular, so I could enjoy a blind playthrought knowing my very spoddly friends who throws those without warning at my discord as PMs.

Toby Fox really is my hero. I work day after day working on ideas for my game, and no matter what I do, I struggle with feeling overly-inspired by Toby's work (Which is likely true in many regards) and being held back by my currently low knowledge and skill with programming in Game Maker. I let my procrastination and self-doubts overwhelm me, and I've been in pre-production more or less for almost four years now, allowing myself to push it aside by expanding the rest of the universe the game is connected to. Every time I learn more about this man, the more I believe we truly are one and the same. I wish I could meet Toby and truly thank him for everything, but for the first time, I look up to someone so significantly that I'm afraid to meet them at the same time.

I loved undertale, yet I only watched a gamethrough 2 years after it's release, and everyone had forgotten it by then, almost everywhere I looked tons of people had forgotten about it or just called it dead, yet, after deltarune came out I was happy to see that people started talking about Toby again, and, even my sister who didn't like undertale in the slightest actually planned to get deltarune for me for Christmas. Yet she then found out it was free and got it on her computer, I then watched her play it, I was happy to hear her laugh, smile, and just enjoy parts of the game. After she was done deltarune I asked her what she thought of it, she said it was fun, I was really glad she was able to enjoy this game even if she didn't like undertale and thought the whole "Sparing" thing was pretty stupid, last year, she said it was dumb to talk your enemies out of fighting you and that if we ever got the game she would just kill all the monsters she sees, but, once she played deltarune... She went pacifist, and I'm so glad this game came out. Sorry for the long comment.

i loved undertale, the characters the story the setting the gameplay the music all were so great it made me feel happy thinking about it. Deltarune came and i have experienced all those emotions all over again. it doesnt have to top your previous work for it to be great, you just gotta make it another masterpiece all on itself. Thank you Toby for Deltarune, i enjoyed it AS MUCH if not MORE than Undertale.
