@WolfbloodJakeWilliams9 ай бұрын
Copyright wouldn't be involved, its just trademark law; she was probably the first to officially register the trademark in the domains of catering and clothing, but if it actually went to court the other party would easily be able to show prior use. I was wondering how much of the actual story they would tell. I read about Denise and Cafe Hon in a newspaper in Illinois back in the 90s when the whole Hon debacle happened. Her restaurant was never a success in the beginning. She was a successful caterer that deicded to open a restaurant. She saw the name wasnt trademarked after seeing it on several items at a souvenir stand at a high traffic area for tourists. Immediately after trademarking it she made all of the same items that were selling at the souvenir stand. Then went to the souvenir stand which was just a simple one person business that was barely making it and had her lawyer threaten them by sending a cease and desist letter. The souvenir stand went to the newspaper and the city blew up at her. She could have apologized for it and let it go but instead she acted just like she first did with Gordon. She refused to admit what she did was wrong and would not let up on the souvenir stand. It got really bad for her when the souvenir stand had to close and she basically said she didnt care and was not backing off her trademark. The newspaper ran the story again with her quotes after the souvenir stand closed and Baltimore absolutely hated her after it all. That is pretty much the whole story or what I remember of it from 30 years ago.

I have never heard Gordon Ramsay speak so beseechingly to someone. Denise made a lot of people hate her and actually threaten her and somehow did not understand how her suing people caused that over the exclusive use of one word that is so beloved. It represents an entire culture and only she is allowed to use it and it was around everywhere before her trademarking it.

This is the favorite episode I've watched so far. Something similar happened in the gardening community when a family trademarked the words "homestead," "homesteader," "homesteading," and "urban homesteading." In fact, they trademarked about 20 commonly used gardening words and started sending out C&D letters, forced people to take down established websites and even take books off of shelves. The problem was, they did this to the wrong person, a lawyer who was determined to defeat them. The whole gardening community got behind him and financed his lawsuit. He won! The trademark office cancelled all of his trademarks. Then there was Mark Zuckerberg, who tried to trademark the words "face" and "book." Talk about an uproar from the internet community! He got knocked down too. Just don't be an asshole in pursuit of profit and you'll be fine.

I love Gordon Ramsay of how he tackles the difficult situations he meets and bring out the joy in the staff to work in a better environment. I always follow his wise words of saying things with the right solutions. He is magnificent and worth to watch such episodes of his as we all learn so much. Gordon Ramsay is a great asset to such delusion owners who think they are doing the right things and are in denial. The way he handles them with so much prudence, and straightforward truth makes GR a mastermind for restaurateurs, bravo!

Denise was a selfish gold digger for copyrighting the word "hon" and it boggles my mind she was able to legally own it as the word was being used by the general public way before she copyrighted it. Glad that Chef Ramsay caught her lying about the copyright issue. I LOL when he caught her doing 86 this, 86 that schtick. To big an ego for owning just a restaurant in a minor city like Baltimore.

Hot steaks can continue cooking once pulled and plated. But not an excuse, you should be served what you order. Canceling menu items, ridiculous, if it doesn't work, then your recipe needs changing. I go to restaurants where I like what I'm served.. I tip my servers, if food is comped for any reason I tip including comped food items.
@Saiya477910 ай бұрын
The biggest issue here is there should not even be a method of which anyone can trademark a word or common phrase. The word "hun" can't belong to any one person or corporation. Language can't be owned like that. You can trademark a selection of words that directly correlates to your business or IP. Cafe Hun can be trademarked, but cafe and hun individually... can't. It seems like that would be common sense and our legal process needs to get a grip and not let things like her trademarking hun as a possibility.

The fact that she was switching between crying and not crying so quickly during her "apology" makes me not believe a single word of it. Plus, people like her are never that easily changed. I'm glad she changed enough for the business to do well though
@Hedning13908 ай бұрын
Well, you're just about as much an idiot as her. You don't understand how basic emotions work. Switching between crying and not crying is normal. She is probably mostly sad that everyone hates her, but it's still real sadness. Also the show is heavily edited with absolutely no regard for continuity.
