Can you elaborate more on delusional jealousy disorder? The last 7 months I went through torture dealing with someone who exhibited this condition, but there were other delusions and paranoid behavior. Noone was believing me until I recently was allowed to record her. She's in the hospital now. But I'm not sure if I'll ever recover or if she'll ever get better. Noone understands what I went through and how much I was suffering in silence. She was just committed on the 22nd of this month.

I’ve come from Shaun Atwood’s channel after seeing your chat with him about your new book that is coming out early next year. I’m off to order it now Sohom. I mention in my comment on your chat with Shaun that I wish I’d gone into psychiatry instead of law but here I am living my medical degrees vicariously through people like you. I really enjoyed this and have just one piece of advice for those of us who are watching to learn and not just for entertainment. Slides showing how the various diagnoses relate (or don’t) to each other would be super helpful. Seeing the key requisites and specific things hat separate one from another in black and white as you move along the spectrum of disorders would be really good in my opinion🤷🏻‍♀️👌

When I was nursing in Scotland a patient who had a mood disorder was becoming hypomanic. She was feeling great so decided to go on holiday. Two members of staff had to meet her and bring her back from Vienna. I think she had a great time

I was once given atypical ones for over half a year (to temporarily prevent my panic attacks) and only now have I heard of the side effects.

Doctor, dear doctor! Your Russian patient might not have opened up to you because of your fabulous clinical skills or blisteringly good looks, but I don't think you were a random choice. Patients prone to delusions, psychoses -- when their minds are hijacked by fantasy -- they become victims to the worst in human behavior in other people, including among hospital staff, and certainly among prison staff. Once the worst of their episode is past, they seem acutely aware of the motives of those around them. When these patients sense a genuinely genuine individual who genuinely wishes to help them, and who genuinely tries to understand them, and who genuinely respects them, they see someone they can trust to genuinely help anchor them to reality. They see perhaps their only ally, and certainly their only ally on the locked ward or in prison. The Russian woman saw in you a genuinely genuine good guy, there to help her. Genuinely!

My son believes he can go through "portals" into other realms. He also sees demons in his peripheral vision. Otherwise, he is healthy, has been self supporting for 20 years and you would never know he has these thoughts unless he admitted them. He seems normal, hard working, and humorous. What do you think?

A really interesting subject - delusions. Do you think it’s on the increase due to external circumstances (social media or family breakdowns) or is it primarily suffering that’s internal? Are they all behaviours which deflect from trauma for instance? Are they triggered from external circumstances? Or are these delusions simply emerging from over valued ideas ? Why do delusions persist even when patients are medicated ? Can therapy work alongside meds effectively ? And work better ? Why are some people prone to delusions as opposed to those that aren’t ? Can someone with chronic delusions be treated successfully as an outpatient in a failing nhs appointment system ? Or are there better results when treated as an inpatient? Thank you Dr Das. I think ur the best psychiatric Dr by far with ur podcasts I have a few MH diagnosis including Borderline personality disorder, was diagnosed with BPD 20+years ago and caused me alot of problems and consequences I even suffered psychotic scale end of BPD a few yrs ago where I had Hallucinations high as a kite, no sleep seeing beatles stuck to my feet Also other weird stuff and voices which felt i needed to do which were very unrealistic I was reading ppls minds I had to be given anti psychotics to calm it all down Also have Eating disorder, OCD, GAD, Social anxiety, Body dismorphia and my, life is torture 24/7. I find ur videos So helpful Thank you for sharing them

I’m a former psychiatric nurse. Close working relationships help, especially when there is tension in the air. And to be honest, many of us have quite a dark sense of humour. I think that is the case for many people working in stressful

What happens if a person with "body dysmorphia" *is* actually ugly or deformed, when considering conventional beauty standards? Consider the hypothetical case of a person with a significant facial, dental, or skeletal deformity. Suppose that, as a result of this deformity, the affected individual is extremely self conscious and avoids social interaction. Would this count as body dysmorphia?

Not if he actually HAS a deformity. It’s only dysmorphia if the belief is unreasonable/untrue.

Is there much you can do to comfort some one from distressing delusions if your not a doctor but a loved one?

From personal experience, there's very little you can do regarding comforting them. You can, of course, be caring, sympathetic to their distress and show affection if it's appropriate, but the delusion will still cause them distress and no amount of logic will dissuade them of the delusion. The best we could do was to keep a close eye on them to make sure that they didn't self harm, let them know we cared and loved them and get them professional help.

I have a question I know I am late to the video but I just found you. My brother I am almost sure has schizophrenia but refuses to ever be truthful with doctors. He believes his in-laws and the police have implanted mind control chips. This is just one of his problems. My question has to do with drug induced psychosis. If the patient still has delusions while off of drugs is it still called drug induced psychosis? He is a methamphetamine addict and has fought with it for a long time. So when he was in his 20's he thought someone had been in his attic and got a shot gun out and ran around his house with it, pointing it up at his ceiling while his wife and 2 young kids were absolutely terrified and crying. After this he was admitted to a mental health facility for 2-3 days and they said he had just been up to long and was having drug induced psychosis. This was like 10+ years ago and after this he just basically never returned to what or who he was. He still has delusional thoughts even during his sober times and after years of hiding how he truly feels he is not getting any mental health except for very basic depression medication from his primary doctor. Mental illness and addiction is a huge problem in our family history and sadly my brother has told himself that he is only normal while abusing drugs. I have no idea how to help him he is absolutely terrifying at times and I am constantly afraid I will get a phone call saying that he hurt his wife and kids or even our parents. He is in his early 30's now and any time we have got him to go to a mental health facility he completely lies to the doctors and just talks his way out of the facility. I just have no idea what can be done.
