Glad to hear you are doing well. I think you skipped over some of the main points about T&T that makes it a story based game vs a tactical combat game. Rogues are nonspecialized characters. They can do both magic and fighting. Talents are the main way to individualize your character. A Talent is any learned skill set. To gain the bonus on your save using a talent, it is up to the player to describe the relevance. The kindred you pick has multipliers to your stats, some good and some bad. One of the best thing about the combat vs d20 is you can mix high and low level characters and they all contribute. Since you add the combat totals together, even a low level character is generating hits vs in d20 when they can't do anything. When distributing the damage, the losing side determines who takes it. So the tanks are always protecting the squishies. There isn't a monster manual because making monsters is easy. One stat and maybe some special abilities, you don't need a 1/2 page stat block. Also, your adds only count in combat. For a save is when you roll 2d6 and add your attribute. High level play doesn't break down because there isn't a dump stat in t&t since you are making saves on different stats. Also since you are adding one side against another, 20 orcs fighting one high level character is an even chance since they can swarm him vs d20 where it is always one on one.

An excellent, well thought-out review. The vibe is fun fantasy that can become very deadly rather quickly. In my experience, if the GM fully understands & appreciates how the system works, the players will love how different T&T is from D&D / d20 game engines.

I don't know if this is true but what I read in regards to T&T's popularity in Japan, is that T&T was in Japan before D&D. Additionally the information I saw said the solitary play nature made it more appealing to the population in Japan. Now take all of that with a grain of salt but it's what I've read in the past.

@@Thegaminggang I'd not heard that story, though it doesn't surprise me. The magazine replay that would eventually become "Record of Lodoss War" was supposed to help sell D&D to the japanese audience, they were using the 1983 Mentzer basic set. TSR didn't want the setting so it was added to the new Sword World RPG. What I have heard though is that it really comes down to dice. Until D&D became popular, d4, d8, d10, d12, and d% were hard to find in the US, let alone overseas. The d6, meanwhile, was widespread for everything from gambling to board games, so the Japanese could easily get enough six-sided dice to play Tunnels & Trolls. Likewise, this is part of why other Japanese-made RPGs tend to use d6 systems as opposed to polyhedral ones.

I really enjoy your videos and your perspective on games. Deluxe Tunnels & Trolls has been on my radar for a while and your insights on the system really were useful to me. BTW, a year later still in print and ALSO the Flying Buffalo folks now have an online store option you can utilize PayPal. Good gaming and God bless!

Sad that Flying Buffalo is gone. Love to see what Ken St Andre and Steve Crompton are doing with "Monsters! Monsters!". Also interested to see what Rebellion will do with their ownership of "Tunnels and Trolls".

You throat is irritated due to the insertion of the endotracheal tube (breathing tube) and remaining in place during your surgery. You could try some ice cream or lozenges to ease the irritation. It should go away in a few days...

Good review and I'm glad you're feeling better. HOWEVER, I'm sorry to see you didn't mention that there's no bestiary/monster manual/monster section for DT&T.

Hello Gaming Gang! Where did you buy the T&T Deluxe Edition physical book? I can't find it anywhere! 😢

It was sent to me by Flying Buffalo Games back before Rick Loomis passed. You'll be hard pressed to find this anywhere but the secondary market or in PDF. ~ Jeff
