The main thing that upset me about Zurg’s big twist in Lightyear was the fact that the trailers all seemed to paint Zurg as we expected him to be. An evil and malignant being that truly embodies the evil emperor moniker. When the actual movie released though he’s just a scary looking guy who in all reality would cause no harm except when absolutely necessary for his plan to undo his woopsie from the past.

@@Larka661 one of the supporting messages was to give yourself a second chance. old buzz inadvertently did just that to present buzz. buzz was doomed to be arrested upon his return. he wouldn't have learned from his mistake. he'd continue to obsess over it. that's just what old buzz did. however, by traveling back in time and attacking the turnip, he distracted them from present buzz's arrival. old buzz created an opportunity for present buzz to prosper. the first time around, he was confronted by star command. the second time around, he met izzy and learned from his mistake.

Old Buzz lived the exact same life as Present Buzz up until Present Buzz was saved by Izzy. The only reason he was saved by Izzy is because the robots and Zurg ship were attacking Star Command. Once you introduce time travel you can pretty much explain away anything, or just leave it to the imagination and you’re in the clear. There is still one HUGE question that I havent seen many theories on….. HOW IS ZURG BUZZ’S FATHER??? It’s part of the toy story cannon, it was programmed into Zurg’s fictional toy “I am your father” and his actual real-life toy too…. My theory is that Zurg’s true form is something we havent seen. “Old” Buzz stole his ship and the real Zurg is looking for it. This same Zurg is a time traveler (this could help explain the “abandoned” ship) and through his time travels he fathered Buzz, or at least in one of the realities he visited he fathered Buzz. We know time travel exists in this universe, so why would the humans (who have already been using hyperspeed for years without problems somehow) be the only ones to have it?

The robots looked pretty run down, so it could've just been audio distortion from lack of maintenance. Another thing I noticed is the subtitle captions on different platforms. Some captions say 'Zurg' while on another, 'B-Zurg' is emphasized. Old Buzz was pretty young when he claimed to have just found the ship and the suit. Maybe he left out the part that he killed the real Zurg and took the tech, but since it was so advanced he didn't have the knowledge to up keep with minute repairs.

There would have to be a Zurg to make the armor in the first place for the older Buzz to find, armor doesn't just appear. Potentially Zurg could have been apprehended by Star Command at the time with this being one of his weapon stashes and Buzz could have told the truth about stumbling upon it. Overall having another person being Zurg fits and was most likely the intention, though older Buzz certainly wouldn't have been able to overpower or remove the original Zurg after his jump, so most likely it was probably abandoned

I was thinking and I have a theory. I think this isn’t the real Zurg. When the Evil Buzz found the ship he probably found the Zurg suit , I don’t think he made it. I think suit was already there and a person who had his own conciseness was wearing it. Maybe they’ve created a new version of the suit like Mark 2 and that person is wearing it right now. That person left the ship and never returned. But why wouldn’t robots wait for their leader? I think they thought Evil Buzz was their leader. In the scene where Evil Buzz is first introduced , our Buzz thinks that Evil Buzz is his father. This indicates that Buzz and his father lookalike. And it’s a clue that the real Zurg is Buzz’s father like in the original canon. But real Zurg left the ship and then Evil Buzz found it and took it. You may ask why didn’t robots thought our Buzz was their leader. There’s a simple answer , they were programed to attack him. If they weren’t programmed maybe they would think our Buzz was their leader. All in all I think the real Zurg is still alive and he is Buzz’s father who looks like him. And he calls himself Zurg. That’s why robots call Evil Buzz “Zurg”. And probably these Z’s on the patterns of the robots were already there(I’m not sure I couldn’t see them at the flashback , it’s just an idea) This is my theory and I hope we would see the real Zurg. This villain is awesome but still I wanna see that man and I want him to say classic lines. Plus , at the after credits Zurg’s suit restarts itself. Perhaps the real Zurg activated it.

I think this theory works perfectly and even allows the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command series to continue. The armor could come from after the TV series when Evil Emperor Zurg had already been defeated. Though, one little problem is if you listen to the robots they call both Buzz's Zurg so it couldn't just be the guy in the armor that was Zurg. Also, if you listen carefully they actually say "Buzzerg". But I think these can be overlooked.

Or what if, since there's time travel involved, Zurg's, armor, weapons, robot army and ship was a bootstrap paradox existing only in a time loop? There's nobody who created that stuff. Buzz just discovered that stuff when he was sent to the future, and he brought it all back to the past, and when he died in the past, his ship remained abandoned until another Buzz discovers it, becomes Zurg, goes back to the past, dies, rinse and repeat. I think you're a bit off on the time. Old Buzz was able to go back to before he tested the Crystal, just not far back enough to prevent the crash. That's why in the 22 years it took Buzz to get back from Hyperspace Old Buzz was able to launch an attach on the settlement, and why old Buzz implied that he'd been waiting for Buzz to return from the crystal test.

There are defintely unanswered questions. I'm sure in the Toy Story universe a Lightyear 2 exists so hopefully we get a Lightyear 2 and get more answers. They have to address the I am your Father line from Toy Story 2. Personally, I love Lightyear and what Pixar is doing. I hope they get to do a Lightyear 2 and I would love a Woody movie too. I think they could get meta with it and instead of it being an old movie in the Toy Story Universe take jabs at Hollywood and say that they're bringing back old franchises to modern audiences lol hopefully they give Andy a cameo, maybe a post credit scene of him leaving the theaters.

The thing is, in 1 of the toy story movies a toy zurg says 2 a toy buzz that he is his father, something that's played on in the movie when buzz says after the reveal of who zurg is, as he says "father?" and zurg just says to guess again

Ah so here's what I think about Old Buzz, he found the suit offline along with the robot army, after booting the machines back on they started to call him Zurg and not his real name (probably because they believed Zurg was back online), and decided to keep it as his identity. Also, could the REAL origin of Zurg be that he was actually a rogue AI created by humanity along with the production of robot soldiers but was scrapped and left abandoned? So yeah, Zurg was in fact, in sleep mode the whole time during the movie, and after Old Buzz died, the AI woke up. If this ain't true, I want to believe the REAL Zurg is actually the Space Emperor we all know and might have created many big armored suits in his likeness to lead his army across the galaxy.

I think a good plot would be buzzurg trying to get Sox from star command, because Sox could have a memory file of the finished formula, (that was destroyed). Only remember when Sox was dropped by moe, and he needed a reboot. What if it altered the memory, so sox can’t remember the actual formula. Still, Buzzurg make a functioning hyper space crystal, but when he tries to go to the past, it sends him (and buzz and the space rangers) back to the future where he stole the zurg suit from the real zurg.

I think it's clear that Old Buzz created the alternate timeline of Young Buzz by traveling to it. The Zurg attack weeks before Buzz' landing now caused Buzz to not get noticed by the police and thus staying

So, here's the thing... The original Ghostbusters movie didn't have a toy line, that came from the TV series, The Real Ghostbusters... Liikewise the toyline that Buzz was a part of in Toy Story was not based on the film but the cartoon, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command... This IS the film Andy saw, the toy line was based on the simplified characters of the cartoon... The end!

Before I start watching this theory, I actually had theory of my own... My theory was that abandoned ship actually belonged to the one and only Emperor Zurg...Evidence of this is not only obvious fact that every robot on the ship can only say "Zurg" in a distorted voice, but also the fact that all the robots have "Z" logo on them. I'm saying that now, so I can see If this theory has similar idea. Also, I would personally prefer to have Zurg as independent character rather then Buzz from the future. I think Zurg is interesting enough on his own, and that entire plot twist kinda ruins the entire fun of having the interesting villain that's just that, an evil incarnate. If they TRULY needed some kind of huge plot twist, why not have main characters think that it has to be a guy in a mech, only to learn that Zurg was just a robot the whole time. Machine that views himself as superior to other humans and machines... It would play nicely into Buzz's hatred towards machines, but also would function nicely with the entire opinion Buzz is having on rookies being weak. I liked this movie. Honestly, I had awesome time watching it, but I do understand some criticisms it's getting. I think movie would be more enjoyable, If people who made it just leaned into the idea that they were making movie that Andy saw, putting themselves into the shoes of a sci-fi movie director in the 90'. Pixar has already showed us how real they can make their animated movies, why not show us they can do it in reverse,...make a movie that feels like it walked out of 1995.

Comment 1) I 100% agree with your theory, Deluxe. However, we have yet for Buzz Lightyear of Star Command to be recognized by a Pixar film. Though, I refuse to see it as non-canon as the movie had the characters of Toy Story make a cameo. Comment 2) I loved the mechanics and functions of Lightyear and Zurg in the Toy Story films. Sadly, the real toys didn't ever work the same way. the magnet gadgets in Toy Story 2... those not working irl is acceptable. It's just a shame the helmet thing, the arm communicator, and the wings didn't all function correctly. for the helmet thing, the helmet only opens halfway. for the wings, those only pop out slightly and don't actually fold open or closed. for the arm communicator... well that did exist for some of the toys. just not all. the anti-gravity belt thing never worked, though. the belt buckle didn't light up or make a sound. as for Zurg, as far as I know, he never got a slightly screen accurate toy. there was a shitty transformer and a kind of statue thing where we pressed a button and it talked. Nowadays, I don't play with toys. However, if they made a buzz lightyear game with CGI and graphics as good as the intro sequence of Toy Story 2... I'd play the hell out of that. Though, now I want the designs from the Lightyear film as well. For a slightly more "real" feel to the game. Hell, I'd love to create my own custom space ranger. In which case, they could take inspiration from Bethesda RPGs and The Outer Worlds. complete with races to choose from that each have their own bonus, an entire universe to explore, etc. Starfield, btw, while the hundreds of worlds in that game may not be entirely filled with content... they are perfect places for modders to place things and even involve in dlc-sized stories. Back to the hypothetical Buzz Lightyear game. Starfield is partially what I imagine a good Buzz Lightyear-universe game to be.

Its an interesting plot twist, but it kinda throws everything out of wack. I mean in the Light-year movie Buzz didn't even know who Zerg was, but in the toy story movie he said he: "protects the galaxy from the threat of invasion, from the evil emperor Zerg" the character we've come to know as "Zerg" was pretty much thrown out the window in the Light-year movie. 🤷‍♀️

The theory goes "We know Old!Buzz found the stuff abandoned... so where did it come from?" Basically the idea is the _real_ Zurg is actually around, and the Old!Buzz, whom traveled into the far future, found the abandoned stuff and took it for himself.
