Lewy body dementias (LBD), 1.4 million in the United States.
www.lbda.org/1...
Presence of Lewy bodies
Typically progresses rapidly
Lewy Body Dementia Association
We understand that though many families are affected by this disease, few individuals and medical professionals are aware of the symptoms, diagnostic criteria, or even that LBD exists.
Lewy body dementias (LBD) are the second most common form of degenerative dementia.
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is most common.
LBD can have three common presentations
Some start with a movement disorder leading to the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease and later develop dementia.
This is diagnosed as Parkinson’s disease dementia.
Others start with a cognitive/memory disorder that may be mistaken for AD,
leading to the diagnosis of ‘dementia with Lewy bodies’ (DLB).
A small group will first present with neuropsychiatric symptoms, hallucinations, behavioral problems, difficulty with complex mental activities
The most common symptoms of LBD include:
Impaired thinking, such as loss of executive function (planning, processing information), memory, or the ability to understand visual information
Fluctuations in cognition, attention, or alertness
Problems with movement, including tremors, stiffness, slowness, and difficulty walking
Visual hallucinations (seeing things that are not present)
The symptoms of LBD are treatable
Early and accurate diagnosis of LBD is essential
Early and accurate diagnosis is important because LBD patients may react to certain medications differently than AD or PD patients.
A variety of drugs, including some dementia meds and some antiparkinsonian medications, can worsen LBD symptoms.
(LBD affects an individual’s brain differently than other dementias).
Treatment should always be monitored by a physician and may include prescriptive and other therapies, exercise, diet, sleep habits, changes in behavior, and daily routines.
Individuals and families living with LBD should not have to face this disease alone.
LBD affects every aspect of a person - their mood, the way they think, and the way they move.
The combination of cognitive, motor and behavioral symptoms creates a highly challenging set of demands for continuing care.
Physician education is urgently needed.
More research is urgently needed.
Research needs include tools for early diagnoses, such as screening questionnaires, biomarkers, neuroimaging techniques, and more effective therapies.
Currently, there is no specific test to diagnose LBD.

Dr. C. I am a retired RN worked geriatrics most of my career. Started at 19y/o as a CNA then on to RN. I have been writing to my Senators and Representatives since falls and mumbles, sniffing and stumbles, public outbursts and wanderings were seen. (I did get a form letter about covid back from 1 Senator) The current POTUS should have never stood as candidate, he was symptomatic during pre-election 2020. His wife, family and 'team' have been hiding the symptoms and gaslighting the world. It is a shame and an embarrassment. We have laws about elder abuse and vulnerable adults. Citizens of th USA have in the constitution Amendment 25. It should have been invoked years ago. The wheels on the bus go round and round...

Did you ever once consider that people were trying to keep a malignant narcissist from taking control of the US? Do you really think people didn't know? smh Come on now... Unless, of course, they're also a morally bankrupt narcissist themselves.

Same here, RN for over 20 years. I thought he was demented enough in the run up to 2020 that they'd put someone else on the ballot. I was really surprised by what happened all the way around. Now, 4 years later, when he's at the terminal end of it, everyone is catching on. If it took that debate for folks to catch on. The common person in this country really mostly cares about what is in their own lap at any given moment, that's it. People voted Joe because they wanted things to be 'normal' in a boring sort of way, but what they got was the opposite. I'd even say all the riots before the last election (even during COVID) were meant to feed the chaos so as to make Joe the candidate of 'peace and normalcy'.

I'm so tired of people saying that Biden or Trump is "too old" to run. I'm glad you mentioned that this is a specific malady, and doesn't "just come with age". Whether you like him or not, Biden is not simply "too old" to be president, it's because he's got whatever he's got, which is probably dementia.

The problem is mental capacity, not necessarily age. I understand the argument for age limits, but I think that it is undemocratic to deny voters the choice of a, say, 90-year-old who is perfectly lucid and very fit (I would still vote for almost 89-year-old Ron Paul). Age and term limits would not have prevented John Fetterman either. A simple, mandatory cognitive test solves BOTH problems of age and cognitive ability.

My mom was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia in 2017. It’s so heartbreaking to watch her decline. She also has Incontenance issues. I took care of her the first 3 years in my own home and just couldn’t do it any longer. I was exhausted. Constantly washing linens, etc. It was also affecting my marriage. I spent a lot of my time taking care of my mom and was neglecting my spouse. She would get angry with me about meals and at times hit or grab me. I finally moved her into private home care which is very expensive. I felt moving her she would get the care she needs. Praise God she lives close by me. Fortunately, me and my 3 brothers cover what she can’t monthly. I just wish they came to visit her or call her more often. Sometimes I feel all alone in it. Faith in God gets me through it. My daddy had this in the last stage of Parkinson’s. It was more than heartbreaking it was devastating. My daddy was a good man; a man of faith. At first he would see numbers “crawling” on the wall. He would freeze and get that blank look. Towards the end he would hallucinate demons. He would be so afraid, but his thoughts were about protecting us. And no matter how terrified he was he could always form a coherent prayer. It killed me to see him go through that. He was a faithful servant that was called home.

The standout for me was that she was perfectly normal with communication apart from the problems I have pointed out.

Cleverly presented and those of us watching know the bus driver has been developing problems for some time. For full disclosure, I am not a Biden supporter and I don’t care for the man, but I am a human being with compassion and I am ashamed of what they did to him. I had been wondering why in the world they had a debate this early? I mean, the earliest ever, before the conventions. I am convinced this is why: They thought, “Hey, if we have it early and by some miracle he performs okay, we’ll beg off the one in September and make up some excuse and plow ahead. If however he crashes and burns, we will use this to throw him under the bus and get someone else drafted.” Plain and simple this is all part of the conniving, scheming way these people operate. They ought to be ashamed of themselves, and his wife is a doctor and should know better.

As much as I don’t like Joe Biden that was just sad last night. We with the ability to have watched him over the last 4 years. He is rapidly declining now and I can’t believe they had the nerve to put him on that stage last night. Shame on his wife for then taking him off stage, took him to another one and praised him like he was some little child saying you did so good you answered every question right. He just stood there and smiled, probably wondering when he could have an ice cream cone for being such a good boy. Dr. Campbell to me this is eider abuse. Biden just liked so hollow. Just a shell on stage. I have to say I felt bad for the guy. He should be in a home on a memory floor and given the love and support he really needs. Shame on the democrats too putting him as their front guy even in 2020 but especially now in 2024. I think congress should invoke a section of the constitution and have him removed as president now. Now of course Kamala Harris will take over and she doesn’t have both oars in the water but anything is an upgrade from Joe Biden. Biden is the leader of the free world???? No wonder this world is in such a mess. Taking advantage of a situation knowing just how weak America looks and is right now. Please pray for America, please pray for Joe Biden. You don’t have to like the man, but we should all have compassion for him in this state.

I applaud you, Dr. Campbell. I was snickering throughout your video. Although this is a very serious subject, I’m in the U.S. and as my fellow friends across the pond and around the world now know, a large majority in our country has been VERY concerned about this long ignored issue…going on four years. Many deny the problem but it’s so important to bring it into the LIGHT. God bless you, Dr. Campbell-you’re a treasure. 😊✨

It’s lovely of you to reach out to the people. I’ve struggled for years to understand what actually happens to give us the leaders we get. I meet such brilliant people with strong values and I wonder why they aren’t part of our government? It’s like there’s a game and most of us aren’t invited to play. There are requirements for entry - connections, willingness to compromise ethics , being related to another player, men over 1.8 m, who can raise a million dollars in a day etc. At some point, when you can’t play the game on your own, the other players use you as a dust rag and clean the floor and mold with your nearly finished body. You can’t go anywhere to leave the game because you have nowhere to go. You know they will either celebrate you or dispose of you. They can replace you, too. None of us regular people can match them. We know who some of the people are. Compared to us, they are untouchable. They each live in multiple hemispheres. They’ve somehow obtained much money. People who oppose them go missing or get suddenly suicidal or other things can happen that make you consider taking up gardening or perhaps knitting. I stopped being curious so I don’t have new info, but I’m guessing it hasn’t changed much. We would like regular people too. Trump is the closest we have had to a regular guy. I think other businessmen should try, too.

@@Sunset553 I understand exactly your very good point, but unfortunately I can’t put forward a solution because I don’t think there is one. Of course every society needs a leader to set and enforce the rules otherwise it’s anarchy and chaos. Back in the day it was the strongest. Now it’s the richest and as we know “The rich get richer and the poor get poorer”. However I do think that our democracy is the best worst option. I certainly don’t want to live in China, Russia, Iran,The DRC, or Saudi Arabia to name a few. I’m afraid all we can do is go to the ballot box to make our mark and hope that there is somebody on the paper who is actually of sound mind and mentally healthy.

Dear Dr. John, my husband had Parkinson’s Disease - no shaking but the “stone face”. Fortunately, we had a marvellous neurologist who recognised early on that he had Parkinson’s with Lewy Bodies and during our regular consultations (in South Africa) chatted to us about the progression of the disease. Although worrying, this information was essential for both my husband and myself to face the coming problems. It’s really important that neurologists are open and honest with their patients and families. Not easy but necessary.

Thank you for this talk! My wife was diagnosed with FTD (same as Bruce Willis) about 8 years ago at age 56. We went to MANY doctors before we got the correct diagnosis. He gave her a cognitive test and a brain MRI to complete his diagnosis. He was the only Doctor to do these 2 simple tests. I feel that had we had a more timely diagnosis we might have been able to slow down the process with dietary changes and a solid vitamin regiment. It's disappointing that the medical community isn't up to date on Alzheimer & Dementia.

Dementia is not always irreversible. Long term exposure of severe hypoglycemia can lead to dementia. Over 25 years ago, I did not even know how to spell my brothers name anymore, nor did I know the names of people I had previously worked with for over 5 years. My short term memory was at times reduced to zero. If you placed more than 2 pills in my hand, I now was no longer able to recognize the quantity. Thus staring at a mere 3 pills now meant an unrecognizable quantity to me. My eyes took up to 2 hours to respond to change in light intensity. I had to read sentences over and over to grasp their meaning. Eventually I could no longer recognize all words as words, but now had to read them letter by letter to recognize them. Even when located in previously familiar places, I was completely lost since they were familiar to me no more. These are just a few examples of the much longer list of symptoms that had lasted for years. The hypoglycemia came about due to my sensitivity to mercury. I am sure you can guess what the sources of the mercury were, which by the way were all eventually completely removed. This was then followed by a slow 8 year recovery..

I am a mental health therapist but have worked with dementia patients who have mental illness. I was very unhappy that we have been asked to ignore characteristics of some form of cognitive and physical decline. We are asked to ignore what we know is a problem. I was very sad for what occurred at the US debate when everyone knew it would have some consequence. There are Federal laws in the US that determine course of action with this type of disease. It is medical but also safety and legal liability. If there are no changes in direction for the candidates it puts unnecessary focus on symptoms and everyone will be looking for them and doing their own assessment of them. Any symptom of illness then becomes part of the political game. That is a terrible thing. Thank you for the information.
