Thanks for the excellent video Yes the glymphatic system and the lymph nodes in the neck clear waste from the brain optimally when you sleep on your side. As soon as I learn this I bought a medcline pillow and switched from sleeping on my back to my left side. Sadly enough I sleep doctor was not aware that the glymphatic system existed, and don't routinely test people on their side in their sleep lab. My AHI on my back is 47, on my side it's 2

Introduction The position in which you sleep can significantly impact various aspects of your health, including digestion, heart health, and overall comfort. Sleeping on the left side or right side each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, backed by scientific evidence. This comprehensive analysis will delve into the pros and cons of each sleeping position, provide a detailed comparison, and offer recommendations to help you make an informed decision. Evidence, Pros, and Cons of Sleeping on the Left Side Pros: 1. Improved Digestion: • Evidence: Anatomically, the stomach and pancreas are on the left side of the body. Sleeping on the left side allows gravity to aid the movement of food waste from the small intestine to the large intestine. • Benefit: Enhances digestion and promotes regular bowel movements. 2. Reduced Acid Reflux and Heartburn: • Evidence: A study published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology found that left-side sleeping reduces the likelihood of acid reflux. • Benefit: Helps prevent stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus, providing relief from heartburn. 3. Enhanced Lymphatic Drainage: • Evidence: The lymphatic system predominantly drains toward the left side. Sleeping on the left can facilitate this drainage. • Benefit: Assists the body in filtering toxins and waste fluids. 4. Heart Health: • Evidence: Left-side sleeping may reduce pressure on the heart by allowing gravity to promote blood flow. • Benefit: Potentially lowers the risk of heart-related issues. 5. Pregnancy Benefits: • Evidence: The American Pregnancy Association recommends left-side sleeping during pregnancy. • Benefit: Improves circulation to the heart, fetus, uterus, and kidneys, while reducing pressure on the liver. Cons: 1. Pressure on Internal Organs: • Issue: May exert pressure on the stomach and lungs. • Impact: Can cause discomfort for some individuals. 2. Shoulder and Hip Pain: • Issue: Prolonged sleeping on one side can lead to musculoskeletal pain. • Impact: May cause stiffness or soreness upon waking. Evidence, Pros, and Cons of Sleeping on the Right Side Pros: 1. Heart Comfort: • Evidence: Some studies suggest that right-side sleeping may reduce heart electrical activity. • Benefit: Could be more comfortable for individuals with certain heart conditions. 2. Improved Circulation for Certain Individuals: • Evidence: Right-side sleeping may benefit those with specific circulatory issues. • Benefit: Alleviates pressure on the left side of the heart. 3. Snoring Reduction: • Evidence: Side sleeping in general can reduce snoring compared to back sleeping. • Benefit: May improve sleep quality for both the individual and their partner. Cons: 1. Increased Acid Reflux: • Evidence: Research indicates that right-side sleeping can worsen heartburn symptoms. • Impact: May lead to discomfort during the night. 2. Lymphatic System Efficiency: • Issue: May not support optimal lymphatic drainage compared to left-side sleeping. • Impact: Could affect the body’s ability to filter waste. 3. Pregnancy Concerns: • Issue: Sleeping on the right side may put pressure on the liver. • Impact: Less ideal for pregnant women seeking optimal blood flow. Comparison • Digestion and Acid Reflux: • Left Side: Aids digestion and reduces acid reflux. • Right Side: May exacerbate acid reflux symptoms. • Heart Health: • Left Side: Potentially reduces pressure on the heart. • Right Side: May benefit those with certain heart conditions. • Lymphatic Drainage: • Left Side: Enhances lymphatic drainage. • Right Side: Less effective in promoting lymphatic flow. • Pregnancy: • Left Side: Recommended for improved circulation and reduced organ pressure. • Right Side: Not generally recommended due to potential liver pressure. • Comfort and Musculoskeletal Health: • Both positions can cause shoulder and hip discomfort if maintained for long periods without proper support. Summary and Recommendations Summary: Sleeping on the left side generally offers more health benefits, particularly for digestion, heartburn relief, lymphatic drainage, and during pregnancy. However, individual health conditions and comfort preferences play significant roles in determining the ideal sleeping position. Recommendations: 1. For Digestive Health: • Opt for left-side sleeping to enhance digestion and reduce acid reflux. 2. During Pregnancy: • Pregnant women should sleep on the left side to improve circulation and support fetal health. 3. Heart Conditions: • Consult with a healthcare provider to determine the best sleeping position based on specific cardiac issues. 4. Comfort Measures: • Use supportive pillows to alleviate pressure on the shoulders and hips regardless of side preference. • Consider a mattress that offers adequate support and cushioning. 5. Personal Preference: • Ultimately, the best sleeping position is one that provides comfort and meets individual health needs. • Alternate sides if prolonged sleeping on one side causes discomfort. Final Thoughts While left-side sleeping has notable advantages backed by scientific evidence, it’s essential to consider personal comfort and any underlying health conditions. Consulting with a healthcare professional can provide personalized advice tailored to your specific needs.

I have never understood why 'they' think you stay in one position all night, and I shall never understand why they sell mattresses that 'memorise' your sleeping position. Awake or asleep, I change position several times over the night, especially if I'm having trouble sleeping, which happens quite frequently now I'm over 70. And the aches and pains that come with age must also have a lot to do with how we sleep more comfortably. This info about dementia may have an element of truth, but it is totally impracticable.

I was always told that sleeping on your left side is not good as it puts to much pressure on your heart
@DavidMartz-e2d2 ай бұрын
Interesting. My understanding is the opposite. On the left, the heart pumps blood upward and outward and gravity aids in bringing the blood back (after the capillaries, the blood is much harder to push). Sleeping on the right side means the heart has to pump blood down (easily through the arteries) but there is little pressure to move it back up through the veins. So, on the right side, the heart has to work harder. There are pros and cons in these differences as well as the tendency toward stomach problems when sleeping of the left side (poor drainage).

Then you don’t know anyone that actually has dementia and it’s not funny at all! I was seriously worried that I had early onset dementia! My neurologist did nothing for me so I bought a glucose kit to look at my blood sugar because all my symptoms I googled said diabetics. Sure enough when I tested I had a morning fasting bloodsugar of 200 and 120 and up is diabetic. I found it sad that I had to research and figure it out on my own when my neurologist just wanted to keep making appointments to talk to my family and as he said is there anybody else I can interview that knows you well! So he was just bilking my medical insurance. So on my own I made great Headway with my memory, my balance and my sleep. Sleep is so important because that’s when the brain cleans the gunk out ( I think they call it plaque like the crud that get stuck on your teeth and the dentist needs to scrape it off) and also reorganizes your memory. It’s like shutting off your computer so it can reorganize its files and run better when you turn it back on! That’s what sleep does for our brain!

Sleep SEVEN hours a night!!!! How? My brain awakens when it wants to, typically after five hours. I can’t make myself not wake up!!!!

You must do some workout especially weight lifting, It will help you. But!! If you feel good after 7 hours of sleep then don't do anything. Actually our sleep depends upon our lifestyle that's why don't listen anyone. If you are feeling healthy it's normal. One more thing please smile every day 😊😊

Doctors have changed their mind a few times on how a baby should be put doen to sleep. When I was a baby, they were telling mothers that babies should sleep on their stomachs, and I have always done so. If I turn onto my side, I wake up. If I sleep on my back, I get nightmares and bad sleep paralysis. I dare say that others have preferences, depending on how they were trained as a baby. I can't imagine how you could train yourself to sleep on your right side if you weren't used to it already.

I sleep in my recliner, modified to hold my head erect. Good lumbar support. Best thing ive ever done. Zero back pain. 👍😎 Placing a belt loosely around my knees prevents rolling my leg/hip outward, and stops hip pain as well as rolling on my side. Best thing ive ever done.👍😎

When asleep I turn on my back, and on that position, my mandible opens and my mouth gets dry. That can ruin the teeth

I dont know WHY most so called DOCTORS on youtube insist that people need to sleep on their left side ,while the gentleman in this video is recomending to sleep on the right side which is 100% correct!

Wrong! No evidence There is currently no conclusive evidence directly linking sleeping supine (on your back) all the time with an increased risk of dementia. However, research into sleep positions and brain health is ongoing, and sleep quality and certain sleep disorders are recognized as important factors in dementia risk. Here’s what current research suggests: 1. Sleep Quality and Dementia Risk: Poor sleep quality and disruptions, such as insomnia or sleep apnea, are associated with a higher risk of dementia. Sleep is essential for the brain’s “glymphatic” system, which helps clear out waste products, including beta-amyloid and tau proteins that are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Sleep disorders, which are sometimes more common in certain sleep positions, can potentially interfere with this clearing process. 2. Supine Position and Sleep Apnea: Sleeping supine has been shown to increase the likelihood and severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in people prone to it. OSA reduces oxygen flow and interrupts deep sleep, which may lead to cognitive decline over time. Chronic, untreated OSA is linked with increased risk of developing dementia. People who are at risk of sleep apnea might benefit from sleeping on their sides, as it may help reduce apneic episodes. 3. Side-Sleeping and Brain Health: Some studies in animals suggest that sleeping on one’s side might promote better clearance of waste products from the brain than sleeping on the back. While more research is needed in humans, this has led to the hypothesis that side-sleeping may potentially be more beneficial for long-term brain health. 4. Other Factors in Dementia Risk: Sleep position is just one small aspect of sleep hygiene. Many factors, including duration of sleep, diet, exercise, social engagement, genetics, and overall health, play a much more substantial role in dementia risk. Takeaway While supine sleep is not directly linked to dementia, if it contributes to poor sleep quality or untreated sleep apnea, it could indirectly influence cognitive health over time. For those at risk of sleep apnea or poor sleep quality, sleeping on the side may be beneficial.
