Magnesium Oxide is known to cause diarrhea. This is the most common form found in low quality multivitamins.

I have much better sleep than I did 10 yrs ago. I use to be considered a noght owl BIG TIME. I take iron because I developed deficiency after menopause 3 years ago. I take vitamin D because I don't get out much anymore and I started magnesium to help me use the bathroom easier since I am disabled. So, it sounds like me adding those 3 supplements to my day has also helped me in a different way. I use to stay up until 2 am. all the time and now I usually head to bed about 9 or 10.😀

Hi! Thanks for watching and for the input! You’re absolutely right-many people may need more than 800 IU of vitamin D, especially during winter. It's always a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the optimal amount based on individual needs.

Blood magnesium does not measure available magnesium since most is locked in bone. The form of the magnesium supplement matters magnesium oxide is poorly absorbed, magnesium sulphate causes diarrhea and only magnesium threonate and glycinate get into the brain. To get vitamin D3 from sunlight you need UVB that varies by latitude, season and time of day and whilst this may raise your blood level to the 40 - 80 ng/ml adequacy band it tells nothing ot the levels of active vitamin D3 after conversion in the kidneys with the elderly often producing an inactive isomer. A daily supplement of 600 IU is laughable since it is what was determined to stop rickets at the start of the last century. The dose needed to raise you r blood level is 5000 to 10,000 IU per day and you can go as high as 30,000 IU per day for a month if it is very low. Care must be taken with iron since is a very strong oxidizing agent that will damage arteries.

Very hard here in UK to get Magnesium Gly, well know health shop here does not do their own but do supply from another company. This is the only one I have found that I would trust to buy. But it is always out of stock wonder why. As for Oxide , you can get it in all stores that sell vits and mins wonder why!? It does cause very loose stools but as I take Amplodine and side effect of that for me is constipation that's fine. One question Can you take both Oxide and Glycinate ? Taking Vit D and Mag Oxide my sleep has improved. Have ordered K2 so will see if that makes it even better.

AI doesn’t agree with what you said about magnesium supplements being ineffective if your blood levels are normal. Here is what AI said: Yes, magnesium supplements can potentially help improve sleep even if blood magnesium levels are within the normal range. Magnesium plays a role in relaxing muscles, supporting the function of neurotransmitters like GABA (which promotes relaxation), and regulating the body’s circadian rhythms. These functions can make magnesium helpful for improving sleep quality and reducing insomnia, regardless of current blood levels. For people already within a normal magnesium range, the benefits can vary, as sleep effects might come from magnesium’s impact on calming the nervous system rather than correcting a deficiency. Forms like magnesium glycinate and magnesium threonate are especially noted for their sleep-promoting properties due to their high bioavailability and brain-targeted benefits. However, it’s always wise to consult with a healthcare professional to determine if adding or adjusting a magnesium supplement would be appropriate, particularly as excessive magnesium can cause side effects.

Morley Robbins (of 'Root Cause Protocol" fame) cautions against excess Vitamin D. According to him, 5,000 IU of supplemental Vitamin D (taken orally, daily) would be very much in excess of what is healthy. Admittedly, he holds a minority view of this subject: best amount of Vit. D to get every day. He recommends trying to get it thru sun exposure, and/or getting small amounts of it thru taking a high-quality Cod Liver Oid (food based, natural source ... as opposed to where supplement manufacturers typically get large quantities of Vitamin D from), or other foods.
