I understand that Demeter just wants to protect her daughter, and considering how Despina (Persephone's sister) came into the world I don't blame her, but she needs to understand that Persephone isn't a weak, naive little girl anymore who needs constant supervision and protection. She's a grown woman capable of making her own choices and falling in love with whomever she chooses. And to be honest, out of all those suitors whom she handpicked herself for her daughter, Hades is more mature, intelligent and honest than all of them combined. I mean, Ares, after having more than a few drinks I'm sure, had just tried to assault her in her own garden. Gods only know what would've happened if Hades hadn't shown up and kicked his *ss when he did. Is it really that hard for her to not have her daughter under her control?? She legit forces her to leave her loving husband and two beautiful children for six months of the year at the end of each winter, tearing apart her family thereby hurting Persephone in the process. I doubt Demeter's even seen her grandchildren, let alone spent time with them.

For that reason, i think that Demeter is even worse than Hera, because in defense of the former Queen of Olympus, Hera become a piece of work only because Zeus was constantly cheating her, breaking her heart all the time, turning Hera in a bitter, paranoid and vengeful goddess. Even, during the Season 2, Hera showed a more wiser, merciful and selfless side, implying that she used to has this personality, prior to be cheated by Zeus, showing that Hera was a more considerated and caring goddess in the past. Unlike Demeter, who was an awful goddess since the beginning, to be too much possessive and controller with her daughter Persephone, to the point of forces her some suitors that Persephone didn't want. Adding that while Hera generally limits to harm only who are involved with the cheating of Zeus, Demeter hasn't qualms in put in jeopardize innocent bystanders from her personal issues, only to fulfill her shenanigans; like threat with a permanent winter that would leads to famine to the mortals if Persephone wasn't returned, or unleashes a plague to weakens the gods, disgarding the genocide against the mortals, making Demeter worse than Hera if you analyzes it.

@@StarScar-44 You're not wrong but it's not really something that's totally confirmed in order to put it the mainstream Greek Myth knowledge base. Mostly because the records of these two are few and far in-between and the time period of these records are problematic to figure out. For example: In the earliest mention of Zagreus, his mother is Gaia, and his father is only called the "highest" god, which could be Zeus, but could be Hades as well. This due to the fact at this time that Hades' identity is as Zeus' katachthonios (as in Underworld, so while he's in the Underworld) alter ego Melinoe, on the other hand, is much "newer" in terms of where she pops up (2nd or 3rd century AD). So, we can't say for certain the Ancient Greeks even knew of her existence. She appears to be a much later addition to Zeus' children, but a lot of scholars have noticed her similarities to Hecate. So, she might actually be Hecate in a new form, which happens with cultural drift.

In the myth by Persephone’s own account too she was not happy at all with what happened. Demeter also was very protective but rightfully so for the time. Of course Demeter would fear a similar fate befalling her daughter and assuming the worst, especially since Poseidon also raped her soon afterwards leading to the birth of Arion. Her thought process was probably something like, brother 1 & 2 cornered and raped me why would brother 3 be any different except this time he targeted my daughter and imprisoned her in his home. Demeter had ample reason to assume the worst, her mistake was continuing to assume the worst and pushing that narrative no matter what, then proceeding to hold the whole world hostage to force Persephone to be returned to her.

I kinda dislike how a lot of medias drag Demeter through the mud by portraying her like an evil hag who disapproves Hades x Persephone relationship 😭 while canonically she’s one of the chillest Olympians and Persephone rejected Hades vehemently when he kidnapped her, Demeter did neglect her duties of governing the seasons when looking for her daughter but a lot of medias escalated it to her doing it out of spite which bothers me a lot
@girl12133 ай бұрын
You've heard of Demeter's curse? It's literally starving to death. That's why people can dislike her because even she took punishment too far to the point a man killed himself by eating himself alive. She truly is Zeus' sister in that sense. And then there's Demophon...Demeter had no right to NOT explain herself for burning him alive and get mad at his mother for not understanding what she was doing. She kidnapped that child after all. Truly...the chilliest Olympian is Hades, and he's been done dirty because of Christianity wanting to associate him with Satan. But his only true crime is Demeter's kidnapping, something that was sanctioned by Zeus himself. Even the story of the pomegranate is looked upon as a later addition rather than the original story, and even so the reasons why it is there has been lost to time.

After centuries of constantly misrepresenting Hades and all that, a show finally makes Hades properly nice and gives Persephone agency
@jish555 ай бұрын
What's interesting is how this is more accurate to the Gods than people tend to believe. Persephone was always portrayed as intelligent (which is why she was the one who was responsible for cursing those who wronged the Underworld). Add in how overbearing Demeter was, Persephone would have known about the pomegranate before eating them, because Demeter would have most likely warned Persephone about what would happen (since she didn't want Persephone to leave her side). Finally is Hades, who wasn't a horrible God, but instead someone who did his job and only once ever showed any signs of doing wrong (kidnapping Persephone), which isn't really kidnapping in ancient Greece since he obtained permission from Zeus, which was the equivalent of marriage back then.

Then let's not ignore how overbearing Demeter was, where she kept Persephone in consistent isolation until Persephone was taken to the Underworld. @@vladimirdaudier6253 from the Homer’s Hymn of Demeter: “Hermes did not disobey, but straightaway he headed down beneath the depths of the earth, rushing full speed, leaving behind the abode of Olympus. And he found the Lord inside his palace, seated on a funeral couch, along with his duly acquired bedmate, the one who was much under duress, yearning for her mother, and suffering from the unbearable things inflicted on her by the will of the blessed ones.” Persephone also tells Demeter she was taken against heed will and cries during the abduction. I hate the overbearing mother archetype Demeter gets. Its inaccurate and takes from the actual mythology. the way it acknowledged the REAL truth of daughters being kidnapped, mothers being torn away from their children

This was accurate to how Demeter was so protective of her daughter from other gods

Boo! Stop romanticizing a myth about a man kidnapping a young girl and forcing her to be his wife and turning the main character, Demeter, into the villain. It’s so overdone and not even a Greek version of the myth.

If I was Demeter I would've not agreed not for half of year, not for more or less. Let the desolation consume the earth. Judge me all you want but If I was in Demeter's shoes, as god I would've refused to fulfill my duties so the world may feels my pain.
