I couldn't help but watch all of this. Demetri Martin is amazing entertainer. I thought that this would be just your typical stand-up show- but it wasn't. He put meaning into this. I thought it was really, really cool. And, did anyone else notice how the letters on his shirt changed? From "demetri" to "me tried"?

i watched this for the first time in my freshman year of college and i make sure i watch it once every semester. i always get something new out of it and whatever new part of the video i end up valuing more than i ever used to proves to me how much i've changed as a person since the last time i watched it.

"You can't figure out a person. Definitely not yourself. You can't maximize a life! What you can do is try to be honest in the choices that you make. Be true to yourself, no matter how embarrassing those choices are. Life is not a science, I realize that. But if I told you that right now, I don't have a point system of some kind. I'd be a lier. I'm a guy who does palendromes, tell jokes about leather jakets. Because that gives me some meaning at least for now." -Demetri Martin

In economics, they train us to think of human behavior in terms of constrained optimization. That everyone maximizes their own utility function subject to a budget constraint. Which ultimately means, that we all have our own internal point system that we get a perfect score on everyday, we just don't see it. If we could see it, it wouldn't matter because what we really want would in the vast majority of cases require more points than the maximum.

I am just a young kid growing up,but when I went in search to cure my boredom-I decided to look for Demetri. I expected just a little odd fashioned comeidian type act. But I was wrong.And I'm glad I was wrong. I constantly think of my life,and where I belong.If I'm good for anything.Watching Demetri.. made me comes to tears at the end. I understood every single word he said,and I've learned plenty there is to know. People who agree with me will understand why I look up to this man now.

I want to know what other people think. The messages I gather from this are: 1 You can't change who you are, you can try to, but you end up being the same person 2 Therefore you should learn to live with (but not love) your vices. You should learn to accept them, and then try to channel your vices into virtues. 3 Society judges your worth by how much you contribute to it. If you're stupid, you suck, if you're smart, you better damn well contribute. He says, fuck'em, society doesn't deserve you.
@happythoughts7792
@happythoughts7792 2 жыл бұрын
By this logic, drug addicts should stay drug addicts since they can't change -- and screw society because they don't deserve a drug addict. You can replace "drug addict" with any other thing in my previous paragraph. Criminal, rapist, murderer, etc... So I don't think Demetri was saying people can't change. I think he was saying that he acknowledged that he was weird and different and that he could have spent his time productively elsewhere. However, in the end, he does not regret his past. I imagine he doesn't regret it because he has learned a lot about himself and the world around him because of all his past experiences. At least that was my takeaway from it.

That was bloody phenomenal. I have never seen a comedian that is suited for the intelligent. He was brilliant, quirky, and insightful. I can identify with this man. I may not see the world as he does, but i can understand the underlying needs that are the foundations of this show. Again, simply brilliant.

I gotta say that what inspires me even more than watching this video is seeing how many comments on KZbin are mostly positive. It's comforting to think there's people out there feeling inspired and motivated and trying to comprehend the idea that life's about living and not just figuring every single thing out. We can't answer the big question. The best thing you can do, like Demetri said, is be honest to yourself.

This was the most interesting stand up comedy I've seen. I can hardly call it stand up. It was inspirational, open, honest. I agree with Demetri, you'll probably never figure yourself out. But I think when you can be open and accept yourself for who your are, you're able to overcome that fear of never meeting your own expectations, and just move forward with your life.
