Might be a long shot, but hopefully she gets an Oscar nomination for 'The Substance'.
@stickynorth3 ай бұрын
I sure hope not! She should be a LOCK for an Oscar with this performance and should this film for Best Picture because it truly is the best horror picture in a generation... It makes Hereditary and Antiviral (both great films) look and feel like Child's Play... This is a grown up adult CLASSIC horror film that gives us Shining, Rosemary's Baby, Carrie, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane meets The Fly vibes all while feeling like it was directed by a disciple of Tarantino, which she most certainly is... To me this is the slam dunk best feminist films ever much less horror films ever.. It just works on every level... And the acting is the best in the business all round... I mean nobody is ever going to forget Dennis and Demi's cocktail shrimp scene EVER...

Unfortunately I doubt that, when Toni Collette didn’t even got nominated for Hereditary then I don’t think Demi Moore will either
@jonathann52052 ай бұрын
@@AHORAN02 “The Substance” is much more critically lauded and psychologically incisive and overall the better film. It’s not unprecedented- Sissy Spacek was nominated (didn’t win) for ‘Carrie’. Demi’s role here absolutely 💯 deserves the Oscar over Jolie’s rote, by the book turn in that dude’s constant cookie cutter annoying-ish female biopic films. Your comment won’t age well, I think. Plus, frankly, if Moore is not nominated, and if truly iconoclastic performances and films are not continually honored (Yeoh, e.g., EEAAO)- I personally become less and less interested in what the Academy does or does not choose to laud or not laud, as does the general public, as evidenced by the Oscar’s tanking viewership.

@@jonathann5205 I don’t think you understand who or what I’m talking about here. I’m talking about Toni Collette who gave the performance of a lifetime in Ari Aster’s Hereditary from 2018. Nothing to do with “Jolie’s rote” (???) or “cookie cutter annoying-ish female biopic films”. I’m so confused where you got that idea. Hereditary was on the same level of horror film (though not body-horror) as The Substance, and was not acknowledged by the Oscars for its brilliance
@jonathann52052 ай бұрын
@@AHORAN02 Fair enough- “Hereditary” does have about an = Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score as “The Substance”, so I stand corrected there. I was referring to Demi’s main competition most likely- Angelina Jolie, for this year’s “Maria” film.

I mean do whatever makes you happy but also it seems nobody is immune from body dysmorphia and the pursuit of youth and beauty especially in Hollywood and especially women "of a certain age" as they used to say... Or as DQ in the movie puts it, when their "stuff" doesn't work anymore...

To address the elephant in the room regarding plastic surgery and beauty standards, I think we need to stretch our accusatory prism a tad to be able to understand that having plastic surgery doesn’t correlate to some sort of magic doorway to permanent youth. You still age, and if you’re getting it to begin with, you are probably, with a minimal amount of self-awareness, better positioned to convey the message this film seeks to deliver, no?
@stickynorth3 ай бұрын
I think most people in Hollywood and now to a larger extent Hollywood-influenced pop culture that people see and treat plastic surgery as "good grooming" as another movie on this topic so eloquently put it... The Neon Demon which to me is the closest spiritual twin to The Substance other than maybe Death Becomes Her... Aka they see it like getting their teeth deep cleaned and bleached, their veneers swapped out, their hair plugs topped up, their ears pinned, new tater tots, etc. in equal measure. It's no big deal... And I guess when surgery is becoming more routine and affordable in an industry with access to buckets of cash generally speaking this whole films concept is par for the course... I mean you could strip away its cotton candy surrealist aesthetic and light and film it like Precious or The Wrestler and it would be probably just as impactful because of the acting, the concept and the script in general just work. It's intelligent, wry, sophisticated and timeless... Hence why it feels like it was set in the 1980's OR an an alternate timeline/reality that is just a few shades off our own...
@solarflaresoftruth2 ай бұрын
@@stickynorth totally agree! 🙏🏼 Of course it is all normalized here in Los Angeles. Trust me! Whenever I step out of this bubble I am confronted with the horror of seeing how warped my experience of life has become as a result of being submerged in it. Your perspective on the era is interesting. I’d add that when Death Becomes Her was released what made it so effectively comedic was that it was derisively exaggerated in its eventual unraveling. It’s one of those unique films that has lost its phantasmagoric edge with the passage of time due to the exact mainstreaming of plastic surgery you refer to. It’s a bit like Sex And The City. It’s as if everyone forgot that it was originally conceived as satire.
