Lovely jar’s Mikkel, but perhaps a white clay would of been better to soak up the seaweed and corn leaves? The last time I did a pit fire was a large hole in the garden, but having a barrel is just great 😊

Thanks. Yes, thats my conclusion too. I have more details here: 120. How to Make a Lidded Jar - and pitfire it kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHunZIiLnM2GedE

Was watching history the other day and for centuries they say people fired their hand made pinch pots in domestic hearths and fire places and pits of course but woods are precious so people were practical and why not combine domestic needs with cooking a pot or two. Of course they were not doing production numbers. Once the Romans left the northern tribes people went back to local handmade wares and abandoned wheel throwing for several practical reasons. Obviously the technology of covered pots was essential to food preservation so the skills were important I’m sure. Good to see you outside in the green. 🎉

What an interesting video. Thank you for documenting and sharing your process. The color of your raw clay is beautiful. It reminds me of turmeric powder. I’m curious what gives it that color.

I have a bunch of old wooden fence panels and posts. Can you use those for pitfire or do the wood preservatives affect the results? Have you ever pit fired with treated wood?
@deMibPottery Жыл бұрын
I use all sorts of wood legtovers. Just never with paint or any toxins

I love the blue colour yoy got by additional raku kiln firing. Do you know if it's possible to get that blue colour only using pitfire?
@deMibPottery Жыл бұрын
Thanks. It is made with cobalt sulfate and to get the perfect light blue it have to reach 950 c in the fire. Usually a pitfire wont get up to that
@David-uv7hz Жыл бұрын
@@deMibPottery Do you know of anything that does give blue colours at pitfire temperatures?
@deMibPottery Жыл бұрын
Cobalt carbonate or oxide wash tend not to need as high a temperature. Another good solution is to color your terra sigilata
@David-uv7hz Жыл бұрын
@@deMibPottery Ah yes.... colouribg the base might work. Just love how pitfire "applies" the colours! Keep up your excellent videos - they are always so inspiring!
@deMibPottery Жыл бұрын
I actually had really good experience with the combination - applying a base color and then adding other colorants for the pitfire

I am looking to buy two kilns for way to cheap. What should I look for when purchasing a functional/non unit? If there’s a easier way of contacting you so I can share a couple of pics, that would be awesome! Thx!

There are so many variables and I am not a kiln expert, so you will probably get better help in some of the big FB pottery groups :-)

I think it was in this video that you mentioned having troubles with terra sig flaking off in the past but that you'd solved it. What was the problem and how did you solve it? (A common pottery problems series of videos... 😊 )

I have tried different ways to make my TS. The one I use now works best. That was one factor. Another factor is application. If it's too thick or too many layers it is more likely to flake of. The last factor is bisque fire temperature. I fire it a little hotter than my usual bisque fires - at 1000 C. The hotter you fire the better it stick but also becomes less glossy. 1000 C seems to work fine for me - for the combination of clay and TS I use. But it is something you should test with your clay and TS
@David-uv7hz Жыл бұрын
@@deMibPottery So the TS you use now is as you describe in your most recent "Making TS" video?

Not sure if anyone asked...Did this jar glaze and refire again for water proof & food safe?
@deMibPottery Жыл бұрын
No. Food safety is a complex subject. See this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIGre5mnrtN6qdE For pitfired pottery I want food safe I use this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3OWXmubnNOHh80

@@deMibPottery Agreed. The phrase is so casually adopted even large commercial glaze products are labelled as ''Food Safe''. I do read various resources concerning this topic. A good compilation of various knowledge. Good job Mik!

Yes, very complex and legally not a global standard, which many forget :-)

PS your video just ended. We don’t agree really re white. It’s all down to personal taste. I prefer the natural clay colour and would love to see the pots when you clean and polish the surface. I’m thinking they look very gorgeous. Great work as always. 🎉
@deMibPottery Жыл бұрын
Yes, it can look fine on darker clays too. Its just that many of the weaker more subtle colors from many salts and combustables wont show :-)
@awakenability Жыл бұрын
@@deMibPottery yes 👍 i did wonder why you applied a wash as I’m guessing a concentrated paste might make an impression? Also you fired the body before the wood fire, so the surface would resist change or at least the interaction between surface and substance would be less… have you tried reversing the process? Wood for raw then a low fire for glaze, tho i thot you were a stoneware potter. Earthenware might be nice for your vases and sculpture like wares with these lower fire temps. Personally i think your adventurous work needs to break free from functional domestic wares 😂👍😎👀 your spirit of adventure can’t remain contained and you are truly an artist in this sense. All best. I still would like one of your pieces here in Oz we’ll have to organise something one day. Take care.
@deMibPottery Жыл бұрын
I always bisque fire first. The way I stack pots in my oil drum makes it way too risky to fire raw clay. It works well for me. For logistic reasons - and to reduce variables, I only work with stoneware. I have personally very little pleasure in making non-functional ware :-)
