When he won the IndyCar title, Alain Prost was STILL busy racking up points at the final race in Suzuka against Ayrton Senna. So, legally, for several days, Nigel held the IndyCar AND Formula One titles at the same time!! I wish he had stayed in 1995 as Paul Newman was able to get a better chassis and his team scored three wins. Mansell would have had a better shot at the title. His 1994 season was in some ways a dud due to the new Reynard and Penske chassis simply being better than everything out there.

One interesting thing about Paul is that he'd raced Formula Ford and had a great sense of how to steer the narrative of the race broadcast. He knew how to lead Uncle Bobby and get the best out of him. In a 1989 race Paul talks about how Porsche had let him lap the Nurburgring in Teo Fabi's IndyCar, which I had to rewind a few times because he was talking so casually about it. I remember following both Nigel, and Michael's progress in 93. I am a Ferrari fan, but kept supporting Nigel after he left to go back to Williams. It's too bad that Michael couldn't wrap his head around F1, and perform like he could have. For Nigel to hold both the F1 title, and the CART championship, was a pretty special thing.
@SchumiFan922 жыл бұрын
F1 were too snobby and wouldn’t give Michael the time he needed to adapt. Mario eluded to that fact that McLaren weren’t doing him any favors either in Beyond the Grid. That aside, Mansell Mania was truly something. Doubt we’ll see it again since no top level F1 drivers are leaving for Indycar any time soon it seems.
@Spike-sk7ql2 жыл бұрын
Michael was partly at fault there too though. He thought he could do like his dad did, and fly home to the states after the races, and just do engineer meetings over the phone. That, at a time when F1 was in the middle of the most technological boom they ever had up until 2014. I seriously think that if Michael had stayed in England, and worked more with the team, at the factory, they would have gelled better, and he would have been better adapted to the car. He could have ran lap after lap in those years, as there was no limit on testing. Schumacher used to do so many testing miles, that he did more than the dedicated test drivers at Ferrari. Probably the same at Benneton. Michael should have done well in F1, but he shot himself in the foot by basically just showing up for the races. It wasn't the 70s anymore. Senna started the very physically, and mentally fit driver era, and Schumacher perfected it. Michael would have done well to follow Senna's lead. Senna didn't see Brazil until the season was over (except for the race weekend, of course).
@jeffa41332 жыл бұрын
@@Spike-sk7ql There are different sides to this story as is well documented. The current 'trend' with fans that often gets repeated is the "he failed because he flew back and forth" angle. It really just depends on who you want to believe. All I know for sure is MA was one hell of a driver in CART, I think that speaks volumes and carries more credibility when considering which theory one chooses to believe.
@Spike-sk7ql2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffa4133 I never said that was "the reason" he failed in F1. Honestly, he started to come to terms with F1 by the time he left, and was getting better results. Had he stayed another year, a lot of the tech was stripped from the cars, and I think he would have done better. Yes, he was a very good driver in CART. No one can take that away from him. The F1 cars of the time required a different driving style with the active suspension. Mansell explained it when asked why he was so much faster than Patrase in 92. With that stuff gone, I think the cars would have suited Michael better. Let's not forget that he came back to CART in 94, and dominated the first race at SP.

A couple of interesting things here: Mansell actually was both the reigning F1 World Champion and the IndyCar World Champion at the same time, since the Indy season ended before the F1 season did. I love the sound of these 2.65L engines. The were not reliable, but the CART engine and chassis development gave this era a extra dimension.

I wonder what all the other drivers thought of Mansell coming in to indy car and winning on his first ever race in a car and track he was classed as a rookie

“Hey y’all make sure they go slow in the pit area right?” “Yes of course. We only let them go 100 miles an hour.” 😂😂😂😂

There was more action in this race than in an entire modern IndyCar season.

Actually, Emmo overtook him before the start-line. I think back in the day that was still a breach of the rule.

You may think that a pit lane speed limit in the pits of 100mph is crazy but at the time there was no pit lane speed limit in F1. At the European Grand Prix a combination of that and the pit lane entry cut off the last corner allowed Senna to set a lap record (despite not actually being set on a full lap). I believe there was discussion about denying the record but it was allowed to stand.

Correct,I was there in a support race.Despite the torrential rain ,working on the race under an awning, soaked to skin it was a memorable weekend.

Fun fact, this was the first podium for AJ Foyt Enterprises in 11 years. (Milwaukee 1982 was the last)

I went to this race and at the start, Mansell didn't get a good start because he didn't realize that you could speed up the second the safety car pulls off. He thought you could only speed up at the start line. Hence, a lesson learned and didn't make that mistake for the resto of the season.

Its normally the rule that you have to wait until the start/finish line before you can go. i think Fittipaldi broke that rule.

Mansell's reputation for going on charges was legendary in F1. He really should have won more than just the 1 title. I remember watching the 1986 Australian Grand Prix as a 16 year old and my heart sinking when his tyre blew up. He was on course to win the title until that moment. Turns out that had he deliberately hit the wall, the race would have been red flagged and he'd be world champion because 2/3 of the race had been completed. That wouldn't work today. Insane what drivers could get away with back then.

I don't see yellows posted at the 2 marshal stands before the pass, only the one after the move was made, and even then the marshal indecisive about it...

1993 was the first year CART had a pit speed limit, and yeah it was 100mph. USAC, always more willing to copy from NASCAR, had introduced one at Indy for 1992, which I believe was also the first year USAC implemented closed pits when a yellow comes out. CART didn’t start closing the pits until 1997 or so, and it kind of took a lot of the fun out of pit strategy.

I believe that was the last year of no pit road speed limit. After Senna died the next year was when different series started implementing speed limits.
