I just tried mine out this evening for the first time. I used it with Sunbrella fabric and it works great! I bought the kit with the various attachments in case I want to cut synthetic rope or other similar items besides fabric. There is absolutely no fraying to the edges of the fabric whatsoever.

Looks very useful and high quality, can I cut Foam insulation with it?
@SailriteDIY Жыл бұрын
No, we do not recommend it for cutting foam insulation.

Is the smoke that’s created by cutting fabrics toxic? Probably best to have an exhaust going while cutting I’m assuming.
@SailriteDIY2 жыл бұрын
I am sure it is not good for you. Yes, an exhaust or fan may help keep the smoke from getting to you.

Do you recommend using this knife to cut nylon spandex swimwear material?

Why push into the fabric instead of pulling like an exacto knife cut?
@SailriteDIY2 жыл бұрын
If that works better for you do it.

Can this be used for PP/PET Nonwoven Geotextile ??
@SailriteDIY Жыл бұрын
That fabric has kevlar and nylon fibers. It has not been tested, so I am not sure. I know that a hot knife will not cut a kevlar rope or fabric. Since it is mixed with nylon it might, but I would not bet the farm on that.

Will it leave burnt mark on white fabrics? Like organza or chiffon?
@SailriteDIY3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nma, Hotknifes work by melting the fibers that then harden. burning the edges is what they do. If you are trying to minimize the unsightly brown crusties, then cut it face side down on a metal ruler. That side will be cooler so less brown than the other. It will still obviously brown the edge some.

Can Dura-Skrim be cut with the Sailrite Hotknife?
@SailriteDIY2 жыл бұрын
Not something we recommend. It would burn too easily.

How do you avoid shrinkage when cutting sunbrella with a hot knife?
@SailriteDIY3 жыл бұрын
I have never had an issue of shrinkage when cutting fabric with a good hot knife. Can you send photos of this happening to me? eric@sailrtie.com and I will evaluate.

cotton cloths can be cut
@SailriteDIY4 жыл бұрын
No, cotton is not a synthetic fabric and it will burn.

Another big reason not to cut vinyl fabric is because they're PVC based. When it melts, it offgases Chlorine, which can be toxic. When I get marine vinyl (cheap or upper end brand) it has a noxious acidic smell that seems to be similar. I have to unroll it and drape it out in the sun for a few hours before I can work with it. Can't imagine burning it.

Martin Tryon I'm not sure what you're saying. Are you trying to sell me a fan for $9.95? Lol
@NGinuity6 жыл бұрын
For what it's worth I do have a Hakko fume extractor that I use on my electronics bench. It works great as well (though not likely up to snuff for EPA requirements either). When I cut nylon or any of the other "meltable" synthetics with the hot knife it smells a little but it doesn't bother me at all. There's just something about the marine vinyl offgassing that just gets to me.

anybody hesitating whether to pull the trigger on getting a hotknife. Do yourself a favor and get this one . You will like it ,trust me. I find myself putting nylon strapping on everything and this thing cuts like butter
@NGinuity6 жыл бұрын
It does make super gorgeous cut lines in nylon. I'll never make one with scissors and a lighter ever again.
