A friend, whose opinion I take seriously, is a successful soundtrack composer and he mentioned that it was one of his favourite hardware synths for its playability and versatility. What's interesting about many of these comments is that people will have strong opinions without trying it in person. Your opinion should be held close until you actually play one. I went out to try one and I have to agree with him. Aside from the great build quality, there is really something magic with it. It could be the high sampling rate of the oscillators and the way they interact with the other parts of the signal flow and modulators. Whatever sounds you make, they sit really well in a mix without a lot of work. I have owned probably a hundred synths over the years and you can't say that about most of them. A synth can sound great on its own but ends up being unused if it can't fit into track without a lot of post production. Nice work on the patches. You really showed off what it can do. I've gotten rid of a bunch of synths lately since some software plugins are outstanding these days but this is one I am going to get. A real joy to play with.

That white version of the keyboard shown at Superbooth did look very good.. I have a bit of a soft spot for white synths in general though.. a rare/one off white version of the JD-XA happened too. Luckily I try and keep to rack versions where available to avoid synths taking over too much.. with ivories gleaming at me from all angles :)

Torn between this and the Iridium (which seems to trump the Super Six on options for sound design). Would love to see you tackle the Iridium.
@Jexus2 жыл бұрын
I haven't played the Iridium nor any Waldorf that came out in the last 10 years, but if modern-day Waldorfs retain the Blofeld / Q sound, then I can safely bet the Super-6 will sound "softer". Also doesn't the Iridium have a touch screen? Do you like touch screens? I had a V-Synth GT once and I hated it for the touch screen. Super-6 is a 100% oldschool interface in comparison;)

I'm trying to like it, I love that its hybrid, and true stereo, the look (the blue!) the build quality, features, attention to details, updates... But it sounds to me "static" or "thin" on all demos i heard. It can be "musical" but I don't hear "weight" or the analog non linearity/Organic sound of the filters. Maybe it's too precise, I don't know if it harmonics or amplitude, maybe not enough distorted/driven or just lacking in the bass. I guess I will need to try it myself before i can understand why...
@Jexus2 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you have the chance to play one in a shop or at your friend's place, you should always try synths and judge with your ears!
@kaitlyn__L7 ай бұрын
I've noticed most demos don't use the binaural mode (though Jexus's does!), and even those that do tend not to enable the "analogue emulation" option (a lot like Sequential's "vintage" but IMO better). Also, there is something about the sonic depth which KZbin compression just kneecaps. That said, it is certainly not a particularly dirty or gnarly synth. It can get some grit from its overdrive, but it's always clean and restrained as it does-so. It can do very powerful bass and highs, if you want it to, but by default it does sit more in the mids. Of course, if you run its output into its input you can make it a lot more un-restrained, just like with an old Korg. I definitely do notice "character" to the filter IRL though, and even family which aren't too familiar with synths say filtered noise from the Super 6 sounds "alive" and "moving/dynamic" compared to digital filters. I'm not going to claim these SSI chips have quite the same "magic" as an old SSM chip, though - despite having the creators' involvement, the spec sheets says they've made what they consider to be improvements in stability (and probably linearity) so it will sound a little more "modern".
@xfghffhfg7 ай бұрын
I think I found something that has the weight I was looking for, not necessarily the best demo and maybe it's processed but the character I was missing seems to be there more. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKSveY2sqc13o5Y

I miss that too. There are several reasons I had to scale down the visual aspect of my videos. I could write a short essay on each of them (and I did on my Patreon), but I can outline them here: current state of youtube / the amount of new synths pouring into the market / the time it takes to make a video and the impact on my health / technological progress and the (in)compatibility of video footage, software & hardware, etc.

I love the looks of this and want to like it, but every demo I've heard has left me unimpressed. The sound is just not my cup of tea I guess.
@Jexus2 жыл бұрын
Hmm... Can you use some descriptive words to give us a hint of what you dislike about this sound (or what's missing from it)?
@nectariosm2 жыл бұрын
Let's see if 3rd time will be lucky, I replied twice but my posts don't show up. The synth sounds flat and lifeless to me. Its mid heavy yet the mids lack definition in the transients and the texture is just too plastic and "synthetic". Saying a synth sounds too synthetic is strange of course but some of my favourite synths have some acoustic vibes in the texture which makes the sound organic and alive. Its all subjective of course and I am using ambiguous terms to describe why I don't find this, fantastic looking synth, to sound like I would hope it would.
@Jexus2 жыл бұрын
@@nectariosm There must be a list of "no-no words" on YT because you're not the only person whose comments can't get through. Anyways, thanks for your input, this way we can all better understand what we mean when we speak about different synths and the way they sound 😎

One of my favorites in my collection, which houses many old and new. But to each their own. It’s not a powerhouse, but it fills such a unique spatial field for the sounds you expect. It’s always a joy to tweak. It’s not the greatest though, for the price-I grant, but I also just support UDO as a new player in the synth game. We need the diversity of real innovation.
@ToyKeeper2 жыл бұрын
I've often heard it's hard to make a bad sound on the Super 6 because its sweet spots are so wide. And it's good at doing the main sounds people need in music. But it's definitely not the most powerful or most flexible synth ever.
