Hi, I really enjoyed this. I’m touched you think it has some of the soul of the Jupiter. Inside they are nothing alike, but we did try to distill the “essence” of the playing experience associated not just with the classic JP8 but with other classic poly synths .. watch this space as the super 6 will keep getting better!

My wife is fortunate enough to play one of these. It is a remarkable sounding synth that really encourages experimentation - it is so tactile and hi-fidelity. A touch of reverb on some patches make this probably the nicest sounding synth we have. Just wondering, does it have the processing capacity to indulge us with a splash of reverb in addition to delay (maybe click Shift+delay params) in a future firmware update?

I am interested in hearing more of your patches! I really like the UI and layout of this instrument. However in most of the sound demos I've heard, I heard it sounding either like a VA, or hybrid PPG-like. I would like to see if it could hit some of those vintage analog tones convincingly.

Digiphex, man... killer channel. Thank you for all the hard work you put in to find these now-classic tones. I'd love to know your opinion on the ultimate polysynth for BOC style compositions. Clearly the monosynth is the SH-101, but the poly eludes me. Is it the UDO? Prophet 5? A Juno perhaps?
@Digiphex3 жыл бұрын
I think their equipment was AN1X, Crumar DS-2, SH-101 and sampler with primarily a Jazz Brush kit. I would say for currently selling synth today it would be the DeepMind, which is a Juno clone, and I do have a video where I did all of Sequoia on the DeepMind, showing each patch. I have a large patch set for the DM on another video. The UDO is fun to make some of these vintage sounds on but probably not as many as the DM. The DM also has FX, a large display and various ways to get a vintage sound with oscillator slop settings and general slop of the whole instrument.

Love Boards of Canada
@kujumz6 ай бұрын
Do you really still feel like this is a perfect board? Do you plan on making more than one video with it?
@Digiphex6 ай бұрын
I sold it. My current thought is that it needs more effects to be perfect. And now it needs the poly aftertouch update board. I would look hard at the Summit today before buying because the Summit is also FPGA chip into analog filter but has more features. It doesn't have the binaural though so if you were really into that, I wasn't.
@kujumz6 ай бұрын
@@Digiphex I’m interested in the Super 6 because of 1. Rolandy envelopes and filter. it can sound really snappy. 2. Jupiter pads 3. Stereo phase modulated pads Couple questions: 1. Do you know if you can do PWM and the stereo phase modulation at the same time? It seems like both need to be done with LFO1 2. Can you modulate oscillator pitch with a noise source? It seems some of your patches do this. Is that a mod matrix thing?

how does the sound of the UDO Supe 6 differ compared to the analog sound of the DSI OB-6?
@Digiphex3 жыл бұрын
The FPGA could sound like anything, it is so advanced. But they have not yet implemented any "slop" or "analog" mode, so compared to the OB-6 it sounds a little more clinical, less loose and organic, and a bit Roland Jupiter sounding to me. Though there has been talk of a "slop" mode.

@@Digiphex what's so different by an FPGA from a DSP?
@kiko19353 жыл бұрын
@@bluename4 I believe FPGA chips have much higher resolution which means they can put waveforms on it that don't have traditional aliasing. But someone feel free to correct me, I'm basing this off of my limited knowledge of the Novation Peak/Summit

For whatever it's worth, I've owned a Juno 60, juno 106, alpha juno, prophet 6, rev 2, deepmind 12, model d, nord lead 2x, nord stage 3, jupiter x (pretty much immediately returned it) and played many more. I still own the OB6 and Juno 106. I went to perfect circuit and played with the prophet 10 rev 4, the novation summit, nord wave, prophet 12, moog one, etc for several hours. I was absolutely blown away by the super 6. It drew me like no other, prophet 10 and moog one included. It felt like everything I love about classic roland synths taken to a new modern level with an intuitive interface. The sound quality and experience was an amazing experience. I've ordered one. Time will tell if I'll hold onto my ob6. As lovely as it is, I often feel I have to fiddle/fight with its envelope amounts and filters to get any tones other than the classic oberheim sounds. I'm one drawn to analog warmth, and I didn't miss it at all with the super 6, and I felt it sounded better than anything, summit, moog one, and prophet 8 etc. The only thing I'd hold up to it are the junos for pure beauty of tone. I've never played a real jupiter 8 or 6, but I'd imagine I'd hold them up to it too. It was very impressive (hence why I've bought one). And it can pull off classic juno/jupiter sounds, fm like timbres, and of course its own dreamt binaural patches. Hopefully it arrives soon. Time will tell if the honeymoon lasts. My only request at this point for them would be to make a Super 61 (61 key version). I would like a simple lcd for patch names, bpm, etc, but thats a specific design ethos decision they made.

@@FakeGlasses From what you say, it seems fantastic, I hope I can try one for real some day. But do you have any idea why it sounds so flat and sterile in 100% of KZbin demos ?

I love my Super 6, definitely an outstanding synth. But it is totally different from the Jupiter. Apart from its Rolandesque looks, there are no particular similarities other synths don’t share already. And they sound different too. You’re paying too much attention to aesthetics.

I suppose you have not watched this video because I show convincingly the opposite of what you are saying. The operation of it is almost exactly like operating a Jupiter.

Great channel... really. But not for me... When will this analogue vintage madness ever stop??
@Digiphex4 жыл бұрын
I think there is a group of people right now that grew up watching fading TV broadcasts of imperfect media that fluttered, warbled and phased and all the electronic equipment in their lives had large knobs and sliders all over it. I am one of those people (grew up in the 70's) and that explains why I like Boards of Canada and playing it on this type of instrument. To answer your question directly, it will probably be generational and in a few decades will fade.

@@itsdrawkcab5899 Virus synths absolutely... or the Korg synths pretty much all of them. At the moment i work with the Roland FA 06 and Korg Kross 2. I have a ton of software synths also. JP8, OBX, Prophet 10, Nexus, Kontakt 5 etc. I also have a hardware Juno-60 . I never use it though. I use the Integra 7 engine loaded into my FA with all the vintage sounds in there. The "analogue" software synths i never use either. There is also one more thing ..i do pop or dance pop songs. It is hard to squeeze in a synth brass sound in the mix or a polysaw. Pianos, organs and some acoustic string is the only thing that works.
