Where the EX really shines is on the huge cinematic sounds like the pad at the 7 minute mark here. It also has the warmest filters I've heard on any rompler and considering it has the same virtual analog engine in the legendary AN1X (which is the best sounding VA ever made in my opinion) this thing is a beast . And FDSP is incredible too. Presets do not do this machine justice. Put in some work programming and this thing is INCREDIBLE

The EX5 and EX5R were the same internally, the only difference is that the EX5R was a rackmount version of the EX5. The EX5S was a limited-edition color (the S on the end is for Silver), but otherwise the exact same keyboard as the EX5. The EX7 is an EX5 minus the Virtual Acoustic modeling (VL) technology, and lacking the "AN+FDSP" sound generator combination. The EX5/EX5S have 76 keys with aftertouch, and the EX7 has 61 keys without aftertouch.

Minor nitpick: the EX7 has aftertouch too. Also worth noting that the EX7 has half the DSP power of the EX5, so you are more limited in the combinations of effects and synthesis engines you can apply simultaneously esp. in the multi-instrument Performance mode, less polyphony, etc. Tbh, both are somewhat lacking in DSP power (especially by modern standards), so you'll quickly find yourself working around limitations on either if you want to use them as all-in-one workstation. As well as the fantastic sounding internal synths, the extensive set of editable hardware controls (bend, 2 x mod, AT, touch-strip, 6 custom knobs + multiple pedals) makes them a great live-performance master MIDI controller for other synths/VSTs too.

That sound at 7:00 sounds like EnsembleMix (although I stand to be corrected), which is by far my favourite preset of the EX5.

Mine just arrived by fedex a few days ago. I had one back in 2000 but it was stolen. The Ex5 is an amazing piece of hardware and I love mine. I’ve missed mine and I had back in 2000 so long and I finally said it’s time to get another And I am most certainly glad that I did. I have several synthesizers. I have a Yamaha GX7, the Yamaha GX7S, Behringer deep mind 12, novation mini nova, an Ensoniq sq1’plus Behringer model d and k2. Is a comment mentioned before, it’s good to see a real keyboard player demonstrate a truly amazing and real instrument. Thank you again and I hope you’re safe.

You've done a great job with the demo and you're also a fabulous player. In 1999, I was really tossing up whether to get the EX5 or the then newly released Korg Kronos with MOSS board. I ended up going with the Korg because of its touchscrern user interface and the fact that the EX5 suffered from midi timing issues and its DSP resources were quickly maxed out in certain circumstances. The newer Motifs didn't have these problems. I must admit that I found many of the acoustic instrument sounds in the EX5 superior to the Triton but I found the Korg much easier to use than the Yamaha. Sadly the EX5 wasn't a great seller compared to other workstations at the time and they were selling them off at half price even before they were superseded.

Alex Fedoseyev Not true, the montage have a powerful 8 operator, 88 algorithm FM synthesis engine. The montage is conceptually similar to the great sy77 with FM+awm2. The montage is a great improvement over the boring motifs!

EX5 sound engines were warmer than Motif. They just abandoned it. Made no sense. They were winning with this keyboard.

The EX5 is an excellent synth, but it sucks as a workstation. The reason is that it has two CPUs and two DSPs. One DSP takes care of the memory; the other is connected to the CPUs and peripherals such as SCSI and floppy. There's a single connection between the DSPs to transmit data. This means that all data from and to SCSI and floppy goes over a 1-bit line. This is why it takes *45 minutes* to load the full 64 MB of memory, which is crazy. (My 1987 Amiga loaded 1 MB per second from SCSI.) Since the market was swinging towards workstations at the time, Yamaha needed to come up with something better, and that was the Motif.
