Thank you Prof. Harvey for further clarifying the weaknesses of radical capitalism and the need for lasting regulations.

What I find heartbreaking is that in many if not most places there are sufficient idle manpower and underutilized resources to develop and provide truly affordable housing for all that want it. The obstacles therefore are entirely in our minds.
@baka_ja_nai3 жыл бұрын
Not in minds - this is idealistic anti-Marxist view on the world. Obstacle is logic of capitalism that demands you to create scarcity and unemployment for the sake of merket manipulations and maximising profits.
@fcvgarcia3 жыл бұрын
That is the essence of capitalism. Nothing is ever planned having the wellbeing of people in mind, only profit matters.

Agreed, for-profit private implementation will lead to price gouging and gentrification by land lords. Thank you for the talk.

Housing market in China dropping a lot actually. In shenzhen almost 20%-30% at least. Xi said: Apartment is for living,not for speculation. And he means it. But managing property market is a very complicated and difficult task, even for the China government. Now the CPC is investigating on State-owned financial institutions lending money/financing to all these huge private enterprises (from 1 to 10 billion USD and more), quite a few in very shaky financial situation now. Wallstreet also has quite some money tie up with Evergrande.

Prof Harvey, now you should discuss modern-day dilemmas like the examples above that will apply to the modern-day socialist living environment, what are the contradictions and those that are applicable, etc. Less Marxist theory, and now how to apply them these theories with practicable examples are more important Now than ever.

I think one of his weakest point as an author and lecturer is that he has never clearly ellucidated his alternative mode of production and social relations. But, the closest he has got to actually delivering an alternate is in his lectures on capital book 1, where his point was that the main problem regarding the USSR and communist China was that they didn't account for the totality when they were building their societies. He puts tremendous amount of emphasis on the concept of analysing the class structure, production modes, our relation to nature etc and he thinks we need to adress all those when reshaping our society. I haven't heard him once talk about overthrowing the bourgeousie by the workers taking over the means of production so maybe it is not something he subscribes too. But he does talk about many issues you outlined in his many lectures that are avaialble online.

Its typical of Western socialist Great at theory not so much on Actual solution on the ground that is practical. China is implementing Government owned Housing for ownership and rental. More or less the Singapore model. Dual track property market one Owned and operated by Government the other private market. On current Housing bubble first step has already been implemented which is cooling. Banks are instructed to stop lending and strict lending measures has effectively stopped 2nd hand market transactions by as much as 80%. 2nd step or phase is what we are seeing now. Controlled demolition one by one to deflate the Bubble for soft landing. Bondholders is likely going to either get wiped out or significant hair cut or both while buyers of single units would get protection while multiple unit holders would have to take the losses. This is a Creative destruction phase whereby only the financially sound and well managed Property developers will survive and consolidate the market. This will take a couple of years after the storm what is left is Smaller Private property market that is healthy and sustainable while Government owned Housing starts kicking in changing the Housing Structure into Majority Publicly owned and operated and a minority Private sector market. As all Capitalist says. If the problem can be fixed with Money then its not really a problem at all. But Socialist Government too can do this as long as they have Money and turn the tables around against Capitalist Monopoly LOL. Its easy to become a Socialist when you have Money. Black cat, White cat so long as it catches mice its a Good Cat. Instead of being stuck in an Ideological level just do what is Pragmatic Regardless of what ideological method it is called. Labels are meaningless. Great for Debate and talk only with no meaningful Substance in affecting Reality on the Ground.

@@weiskl887 Wow what a reply, I read through from start to finish. You must know the situation in China better than some pundits or China experts. Similar to you the property market will be solved with a soft landing. for society to progress there must be more pragmatism rather than excessive ideology that is what is happening in the US NOW.
