"Cobalt Red": Smartphones & Electric Cars Rely on Toxic Mineral Mined in Congo by Children

The Democratic Republic of the Congo produces nearly three-quarters of the world's cobalt, an essential component in rechargeable batteries powering laptops, smartphones and electric vehicles. But those who dig up the valuable mineral often work in horrific and dangerous conditions, says Siddharth Kara, an international expert on modern-day slavery and author of _Cobalt Red: How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives_. In an in-depth interview, he says the major technology companies that rely on this cobalt from DRC to make their products are turning a blind eye to the human toll and falsely claiming their supply chains are free from abuse, including widespread child labor. "The public health catastrophe on top of the human rights violence on top of the environmental destruction is unlike anything we've ever seen in the modern context," says Kara. "The fact that it is linked to companies worth trillions and that our lives depend on this enormous violence has to be dealt with."

I do global supply chain management. Trust me, the senior management in companies are well aware of the nature of the sourcing of input materials. The use of third party "cutout" companies that will provide "proper documentation" is common. Tim Cook was confronted by a reporter on the subject of cobalt mining and he literally turned his back on the reporter and walked away like a coward.

Commenters upthread are saying Samsung smartphones are manufactured in Vietnam using Australian cobalt, which is mined to higher safety and environmental standards. Another suggestion is to change your phone only when necessary. I had my first smartphone for 12 years. But consumer choice can't do much, especially when industry systematically encourages, even forces higher consumption by making phones that can't be upgraded so as to be able to receive new software updates or install new apps.

Lithium Iron Phosphate/ LFP batteries that go in to >60% of all Tesla vehicles made contain zero cobalt. Tesla has also joined agreements on ethical sourcing of cobalt. It’s important to note that the second largest reserves of cobalt are found in Australia, which has some of the best mining practices in the world.

The good news is that EV manufacturers are aware of the problem, and most are solving it by removing cobalt from their batteries. Some already have cobalt free battery options and most other manufacturers will most likely have made the switch within two years. The problem is that the switch will only lower the value of cobalt and unless the people of the area find a new way to make money this will only make them poorer. I suspect that cobalt in five years will go back to the previous use, as a catalyst for removing sulphur from fuel and use in the cheapest of lithium batteries.

The companies at the top may not be able to trace the source of the cobalt they buy from China. To change the situation, either China has to change, or the Congolese need access to alternate depots that pay substantially better and offer tools and protective gear, to gradually improve conditions for the Congolese. The Chinese would either have to raise prices, or their supply would dwindle. What China is doing isn't capitalism. The solution I have described is true capitalism. Whichever country or company does this would directly gain access to the cobalt, thus cutting out the profits to China and using part of the savings to lift the Congolese people. Paying more money to the Congolese is necessary to convince them to travel further to these alternate depots (China will block them from being nearby).

Patrice Lumumba was murdered by Belgium and the CIA. Ken Saro-Wiwa was executed, after criticizing and opposing Shell. These events underscore the basic principle: Powerful interests in "the West" own and control the world. They do not allow the poor to organize and demand better conditions. There are two ways to respond. One is to boycott their products. The more effective way is to support political candidates who would not support this system. Candidates who would not interfere when someone in another country is organizing to get a better deal for their people. It does take a little work to identify who the good candidates are. And of course it's not always black and white. There are many shades of grey in politics. But change is possible.

I must say my husband and I were just 2 people producing and exporting clothing in Nepal and India.We required they pay more to workers our producers hired than the going rate of $2 a day 25 years ago. We gave the children--formerly snot-nosed and running under the looms where the boss stood far too close to the married women weaving in the dark, as far as my intuition told me----a chance, because I was raised to tithe first, not after. We used Swiss dyes not harmful to environment. We became the largest clothing exporter in Nepal doing this: I required lighting, cooling, tea breaks, that the women not have to sit on cold concrete to knit, and for wovens, that women were staged in their factory roles apart from men as is proper in those cultures. We gave scholarships so children of the textile workers to go to school, first generation --even girls were recruited (rare) and children were seated together (unheard of) despite their various castes. Bhaktapur, in those years, became the most literate city in Nepal.(1995-2005) Migration happened, and I had to think of more product for new employees other than clothing--quilts, dolls,ornaments, blankets, pillows, yoga bags, handbags etc. If 2 little people can do this with a better vision for the public health of emerging nation--specifically women and children-- just imagine the tech giants when they get "struck by spiritual lightning", and the possible cultural change making and joy that might be. It was wonderful to see the children's proud, sweet, smiling faces as they decorated us with marigolds in their ceremonies. --Let your expose leave these tech manufacturers showing no value for human life be brokenhearted. And, though not truly possible regarding the public health of women and children already corrupted by their bloody greed, may they make amends. Thank you for whistleblowing, Brave Heart. NEVER STOP. P.S. I want to know if these survival-mode women are also sexually exploited--such as in the tea industry there--just to get a horrible job like this, from male overlords. P.S.S. @@kiticanax1421apparently, most cobalt is used to refine fossil fuels (petrol/gasoline, diesel, kerosene etc.) and has been for decades. The Labour conditions look terrible but I'm suspicious as to exactly who is pushing this narrative. I hear no mention of fossil fuels here.

We don't actually need coble. We've proven that several times they choose to do it because of the cruelty. Corporations know we have alternatives but they prefer to do This because it makes them feel powerful. It's why we need to re allocate all the wealth back a total economic reset. An actual economic reset.

It’s important to note that the second largest reserves of cobalt are found in Australia, which has some of the best mining practices in the world.
