My family lived in Rhiyadh, Saudi Arabia for several years. There it is very normal to get to 120F in the shade. You changed your habits to stay healthy - to survive the heat. 1. Do NOT wear synthetics. They are basically wrapping yourself in plastic that doesn't let the heat out sweat out. Natural fibers allow your sweat to evaporate, helping you cool. 2. Wear light colors, not dark colors. Dark colors absorb the heat; white or very light colors reflects it. 3. Don't plan to be outdoors for more than an hour in the hotter parts of the day. Plan your trips for morning or late afternoon or evening. 4. If you can, consider a two hour lunch/ siesta for the hottest part of the day. You don't have to sleep, just avoid being physically active. 5. Try to cook during the night for the next day's meals. Or use an outdoor grill. Running an oven during the day is going to heat up your house. 6. Cool your house as much as possible during the night and early morning. Then block the windows to keep the sun out during the heat of the day. Sometimes (depending on your home), hosing the roof and sides of your house in late morning will help it stay cooler. 7. Plant heat resistant trees and bushes around your house to provide shade. Or put up lattice work or awnings to provide shade. 8. Have plenty of tasty fluids around to drink - ice tea, kool-aid, flavored ice water, etc. 9. Avoid purified water that has been stripped of its minerals and electrolytes. You sweat out a lot of your salts and that can be dangerous. 10. Slow your life down.

@katiedid1851 not sure what you mean, but of course you would do much the same for your animals. Providing a child's wading pool in the shade is really nice for your pets. They can drink from it or just sit in it. We watered the bushes around the outside of our house in the morning and our outdoor pets would lie in the cool shade of them during the hot part of the day. The Arabs would hang their heavy carpets on the walls as decoration and insulation. Our floors were unsealed plaster with a drain in the middle of the floor. In the morning, you splashed a bucket of water on the floor and squeegied it to the drain. The moisture soaked into the plaster and made the floors so nice and cool the rest of the day.

Ok, and I'm a middle aged construction worker born and raised in texas and still working here. Every company I've worked for has mandated breaks, mandated water or other refreshments (you can't work outside with only water, usually 1 gatorade - a couple of waters), cooling trailer or trucks, and everyone wears gear for the heat. Every one also had yearly training on heat exhaustion heat strokes, signs to look for, responses, medical assistance, and emergency responses. We've been handling this since a long long time. We don't need a redundant bureaucrat fat cat to do nothing and suck a pay check. This is why I hate Dem Now videos, they never give a balanced view. They'd rather bring on a "journalist" from the northeast whose only lived here for like 4 years to give their opinion. This is totally normal. Not even a novel heat wave...just a normal heat wave like we get every year.

@@tylr3669 I think you are too readily dismissing Jeff Goodell's expertise. And why does it matter where he lived before or where he lives now? Suppose he never lived in Texas at all? Should we ignore non-Texans? I appreciate your pointing to the fact that the government is not needed in this respect. Even if there are employers who are so despicable as to ignore the lives and safety of workers, there are other means available to deal with them. But the state government is denying local communities the right to protect people there. Why? How is any business hurt by this requirement to provide this life-saving precaution, and why does any business object to it? Without talking about in generalities about government overreach, slippery slopes, or creeping socialism/ communism, explain why the STATE government needs to bring its own force to bear against THIS local concern? If the situation were that the Texas state government mandated the water breaks, would that be a bad thing? (TBH, I could understand objections to that better than this current matter). I just realized how outrageous this entire water breaks debate is, in the face of the real issue here. It's not Texas.

The governor signed a law that REQUIRED workers to take a break, and you pretend that he signed a law denying workers water breaks. Do you really not see the difference in the two? Lets say the governor signed a law saying Im no longer required to take a dump twice a day. How many dumps am I going to take? As many as I need.

IN BOCA RATON FLORIDA, IN THE LAST HALF OF JULY, THE AVERAGE HIGH IS 90F AND AVERAGE LOW IS 78. RIGHT now it is 84F and the low tonight is forecast to be 80.6 F.. This pretty much normal for our area. Be careful of the meteorologists who now like to bump up the temperatures by using the "It feels like" temperature scale. A few days ago I saw for our area that the temperature was 79F outside. I went for a long run outside and barely broke a sweat. I saw that the weather people had 104 F on our weather report. They said it feels like 104F. I want to know what the temperature is outside. I do not want to know what it feels like!!! In Florida this time of year we normally get some rain in the afternoon. So with the current new meteorologist mindset the average afternoon temperature would feel over 100 degrees. This is a huge distortion in the forecasting. Stick to the actual temperatures and provide the humidity index. That is honest reporting.

There was the Tuskegee experiments in which people of African descent were infected with sexual diseases and allowed to transmit it within our community. There was the secret sterilisation of the Ethiopians in Israel. There have been numerous aid packages to Africa with clauses that contain family planning recommendations. In fact Bill Gates, who is a strong advocate for population control, was recently in Nigeria…. Africa’s most populous country for reasons yet unexplained. Also, in the UK, record breaking temperatures are often reported from airstrips with large expanses of tarmac which absorbs and retains heat. One 'record' was recorded within moments of the arrival of three Eurofighter Typhoon jets. The temperature was already skewed by the proximity of the airfield, then there was a leap of 0.6C on the arrival of the aircraft, then a drop of 0.6C immediately after. But the record temp in between was still published.

He unhitched from the trailer where he was waiting for a mechanic and drove to a gas station to warm up even though the company told him to stay. Gorsuch ruled in favor of the company that fired the trucker for not freezing to death for them. Gorsuch ruled that if the company orders you to freeze to death then you freeze to death. This is the same thing if your ordered to allow yourself to die of heat stroke then you die of heat stroke. Its not about the job or profits or smart business, it is about the corperations having total control of labor able to force them to die. It is a philosophical battle and the workers are losing.

In the Spring 2021 heat dome event in British Columbia - Victoria BC - which normally has a temperate climate - was over 40C (104). There is constant high humidity here, as we are on the tip of an island. In the Island and Lower Mainland 719 people died during the event - and the Goverment cynically clawed the number down to 619 actually being 'heat related'. Most were elderly and/or disabled who lived alone in non-air conditioned apartments. Many were long term care residents - as the facilities were not air conditioned. The 911 system broke down - people died on hold to 911. People waited 16 hours for the ambulance to arrive, and died waiting. It was horror. The Premier opined that 'mortality happens' and that people have 'personal responsibility'. (He later walked back those comments.) I am in my mid 60's and not used to the heat - I stepped out of my sweltering apartment, onto my shaded balcony - in the hopes of catching a little coolness. It was 40C in the shade on my balcony. My pet rabbit was splayed, panting, on the carpet just inside the door. I thought we were both going to die. The sense of desperation I felt - and how hot and sick I felt - are feelings that i will never forget.

Every one also had yearly training on heat exhaustion heat strokes, signs to look for, responses, medical assistance, and emergency responses. My point is, this is normal. i would agree that unions can help however unions are just as much at fault for this mess. they aligned with Reagan and the Republicans to help destroy union power and influence from the 1980's on losing any influence they had trying to keep their organizations white male only. they were easily used by the corporations to give up their seat at the table and for a sense of individialism rather than solidarity.

My thoughts on global warming, I leave exhaust emissions/greenhouse gas out of the equation. Only the heat caused by the use of fossil fuels and the products they make. Heat energy cannot be destroyed, only transferred, firstly to the air. The more humid the air, the more it efficiently it holds heat. Similar to your furnace that heats the air in the house, and then circulates. There is just over seven miles of useable air above us. If I drive my car to my next nearest city that is the same distance, it is a short trip relative to the scale of the planet. If I instead point my car skyward I will be at the end of useable air. It is like the thin outer skin of a large onion. The troposphere starts at ground level and extends on average 7.5 miles above our head. The troposphere is warmed by heat from the Earth’s surface, and as we know warm air rises. This is exactly what happens in the troposphere, great columns of warmer air rise from the surface to higher altitudes cool off and sink down again. Effectively the troposphere is churning like the fluids in a lava lamp, hence its names, derived from the Greek word trope, meaning “turn” or “overturn”. Its turbulent nature means that the upper extent of the troposphere (called the tropopause) varies, over the chilly poles it reaches 30,000 ft and a height of 56,000 ft at the warmer equator. It is cold up there at the tropopause perhaps −76 °F. Let us start with cars, there are over a billion worldwide. The following numbers are in degrees Fahrenheit. Brake temp 100-200, downhill 200-400 Exhaust Manifold 1200. Four tires 50 above road temp. equals 4 billion tires. Muffler 300-500 Catalytic Convertor starts to operate at 400-600 goes to 1200-1600 Tailpipe exhaust 200, Radiator/engine 195, also heat retention after shut off producing continued warming. Driving a car is like driving a furnace and its heat exchanger through the air, that does not shut off until you get to your destination. There is also frictional heating of the air moving over the exterior of the car. When cars are parked during the day: At 70 on a sunny day, after a half hour, the temperature inside a car is 104 . After an hour, it can reach 113. When temperatures outside range from 80 to 100 , the temperature inside a car parked in direct sunlight can quickly climb to between 130 to 172. The darker the exterior color of the car dictates how hot the surfaces are. If that car was a large green shrub, almost no passive solar heat would be created. A house has about 20% heat loss, there are about 1.5 billion households worldwide for now. The old expression, do not leave the door open, am I paying to heat the neighborhood? Many modern houses have much more square footage than is needed, needing more heating, and also more cooling. Air conditioning creates heat, adding to warming, thus needing more cooling (vicious cycle). Most houses have an asphalt roof, passive solar heat as high as 170, white 23% lower. This heat retention gets released overnight, average house has 7,000 pounds of shingles in one layer,14,000 with two layers. The United States has pavements and other impervious surfaces that cover 43,000 square miles, an area nearly the size of Ohio. Deforestation, everything that was green and is now something humans paved over or built upon is making passive heat from solar radiation. Asphalt and concrete roads have solar heat retention, and then radiate overnight. The expression, you could fry an egg on it. But not on the grass next to it. Passenger planes 600-900 exhaust. Factory exhausts (steam) 200. Cooking stoves. Clothes dryers. Exhaust heat from ships, trains, large construction machines. On my daily bicycle ride I encounter pockets of heat from garbage trucks and other vehicles. If the air temperature is at 65 degrees, the pocket feels like 95 degrees. Multiply these warm pockets of air by billions everyday on the planet. Many exterior lights are on all night. LEDs are much better than incandescents. 7.7 billion people create some heat at 98.6 degrees. Compare the planet to a human being, a one degree permanent rise in air temperature for the planet, a human would be at 99.6, on the way to having a fever. Arthur C. Clarke in his final Space Odyssey novel- 3001: The Final Odyssey, postulated that if humans were to harness the power of dark matter/energy we would probably heat up the world to our demise. One cup of it is enough to bring all of the oceans to a boil. Albedo is a measure of the reflectivity of the earths surface. Ice-albedo feedback is a strong positive feedback in the climate system. The melting of the ice sheets increases the absorption of heat energy from the sun onto the darker ocean water. Which in turn causes the ice sheets to melt at a faster rate. Exposed tundra also releases methane at a faster rate. NASA believes that variations of solar activity play a small role in global warming. For 40 years the suns energy output has gone up or down by less than 0.1 percent. Global warming is creating climate change, I do not believe there is a viable solution. There are 1.4 million more people on this planet every week. Money should be spent on getting prepared for its effects on us all. It is going to be exponential, if not already. I repeat, heat energy cannot be destroyed, only transferred, firstly to the air.

I was a wildland firefighter for 12 years, resigning favorably from a Captain's position. Your organs will fail before your tissue breaks down. **The biggest symptom, in going from heat exhaustion to heat stroke (which is life threatening) is that you have been sweating like a horse all day, and then in some of the hottest weather--YOU STOP SWEATING. You may also feel dizzy, nauseous, or weak. If you don't get out of the heat, strip off some layers if you are wearing a lot of clothes, and start getting some ROOM TEMP water in you, you are at great risk of suffering a heart attack, stroke or death. Do NOT drink ice water when you are critical---your body has to heat it to metabolize it, so it takes longer for body to absorb it in your stomach. Room temp or even warm-ish (body temp) water will be absorbed fastest. And no, gatoraid is not a substitute for water. It's hard for liver to process, especially in the concentration at which its sold. Drink one small bottle to one quart of water. Double the water you drink with it or dilute it with 1:2---1 part sports drink to 2 parts water. And it only takes 1 small bottle. The rest should be water. Watermelon and most melons are natural electrolyte replacements. Another thing to understand: Your body absorbs water slower than it sweats it out. So even if you are fully hydrated on day 1 of your outdoor work week, and sweat a lot at work on Day 1, you will start off on Day 2 more dehydrated--even if you drink a gallon or more of water in the evening on day 1. It takes 24 to 48 for your body to fully absorb all the water you sweat out in day 1. See how by day 4 or 5 of a hot work week will put you more at risk? You simply cannot absorb water fast enough to replace what you sweat out in an 8 hour work day in high heat. But here is one factor that impacts all this: Your cardiovascular fitness is linked to the efficiency of your body to cool itself. So if you are out of cadio shape you are more at risk of heat illness. It's one of many reasons wildland firefighters spend 2 hours each work day they are not on fires, doing very challenging workouts which involve running miles, up to 10 miles, with lots of steep hills and at high elevation, and doing death march hiking a lot. Their cardio fitness protects them from heat illness.

The fun fact that I heard from scientists who study Antarctica is that this severe heat since late June--has nothing to do with El Nino. The El Nino heating will kick in later, on top of whatever is happening now. Data from the Antarctic (sea ice formation, it is winter there now) and the world wide heat dome temperatures, when you see them plotted against all previous years--look like an aerial view of a train derailment they are so far away from the well-worn path made by the previous year's data. The wheels came off this month.

I suffered heat exhaustion & ultimately heat stroke in my 20’s while working road construction around GA/AL. Within 10 yrs of that incident & coincidentally during a rare heatwave where I live I experienced an ischemic stroke.Over 20 yrs on & I’ve never recovered from that initial heat emergency & I know that I never will. I am extremely sensitive to heat now in a way I wasn’t prior to the GA/AL heat stroke events. I’ve even spent about 14 weeks summer to Fall in the south central Missouri Ozarks beforehand & fared just fine. After my heat stroke though, heat is a no go and humidity w/heat is like breathing soup. This summer (and it’s not actually summer yet yikes) has been rough in the PNW w/the unusually high heat we’re having. It’s wrecking me personally. It’s much hotter longer in the PNW than at the turn of the century.

Calculate Tipping points heat increase in Celsius in the next 5 to 20 years: Artic Sea Ice Loss:: 2 Degrees, Methane Burst in the Permafrost: an immediate 0.6 Degress, Coral Reef Die, AMOC halts: Southern Latitudes heat increase 4 degrees, Greenland Ice sheet collapse 2 degrees, Death of the Amazon Rain forest 2-4 degrees, Multiple Antarctica Ice Sheet Collapse 4 degrees. There are 61 more Tipping points not mentioned happening simultaneously. Also calculate, the Green House gases from underwater Volcanoes, Water evaporation worldwide. Multiple El Nino due to come in every 3 or 4 years. Oh and yes burning of Fossil fuels. By the Way to make the Electric Cars you need Coal to run the Factories. There is already 2 degrees cooked into the Atmosphere and we should expect ongoing thermal wars. The Rich the government prefer for Civilization to disappear than part with there money and status.
