The DOJ Special Prosecutor had a fair deal in place to resolve the Hunter Biden cases. When the judge said there was a technical problem with going forward with the deal, the Right Wing put so much pressure on the case that the fair deal was withdrawn. What followed was an unfair political prosecution intended to mollify the Right Wing. Under these circumstances, a pardon is entirely appropriate. The fact that the Special Prosecutor was a Trump appointed US Attorney and the judge hearing Hunter Biden's tax case was appointed by Trump are points also worth considering.

I think if the pardon extended exclusively to the tax evading and gun charges wouldn't be as offensive. Obama pardoned or commuted the sentences of like 250 people, most of which were unfairly sentenced under federal drug laws, and it took him twice as long to do it. Even by the pardons divided my time metric it's clear Trump pardoned more people per year of being in office, and there's a big difference in the types of people in these two groups.
