Elon Musk, the tech billionaire and unelected adviser to President Donald Trump, is asserting control over much of the federal bureaucracy and sensitive government computer systems despite lacking clear authority. The highest-ranking career official at the Treasury Department was pushed out after refusing to hand Musk's team the keys to the government's entire payment system and the $6 trillion in payments the system processes annually, including Social Security checks, tax refunds and Medicare benefits. Musk and his team have also seized control at the Office of Personnel Management and the General Services Administration, key institutions that function as the central nervous system of the U.S. government. "In any other situation, this would be called state capture, and people around the world would be condemning it," says Democratic strategist Waleed Shahid, who writes in a new blog post that "Elon Musk is staging a coup." We also speak with Lindsay Owens, executive director of the Groundwork Collaborative, who warns that Musk could be laying the groundwork for major tax cuts Republicans have promised that will disproportionately benefit corporations and wealthy people like him. "Elon Musk is going to pay for his tax cut with your Social Security," says Owens.

I'm a software engineer with 35+ years of. experience. When I read details of Musk's takeover of Twitter, it became very clear to me that his notions of coding and design are very outdated. This is common for anyone who moves from coding to management to company ownership, there is a transition in that career path where that person no longer writes code, and they quickly become outdated in their coding skills and knowledge. I was horrified by some of the details I read as to how he assessed code at Twitter and the decisions he made that left that app insecure. He is too arrogant to consider he should have experts that are current not only code, but assess code and manage teams. Musk is grandiose much to the detriment of 'X' and any tech he gets his hands on. I'm not exaggerating and I know I'm correct on this assessment.

Trump gave Elon Musk access and power over the Federal Treasury through Executive Order - that is why the staff couldn't stop it nor could the police make arrests. When this order was actioned, Trump breached democratic procedure and policy which has gone without response (government did file breach of privacy legal action but nothing against democratic breaches). As such, Trump has brought the US into the early days of being a dictatorship. Trump has secured the boarders with Mexico and Canada through tariff talks - what keeps people out also keeps people in. Trump has called for the names of every FBI agent involved with all investigations into him requiring questionnaires to be filled out - FBI filed court action regarding this - this places them and their families in grave risk - estimated 6000 FBI agents are affected. Trump is dismantling the CIA offering severance packages of 8 months pay to leave now - places the US at risk of international attacks (increased risks now that he has announced plans to take over Gaza). Trump has alienated the US on the world stage and removed the US from international protective groups, including removing the US from the UN Human Rights Commission. Trump has removed inspectors and stopped the flow of information such as food recalls.

Trump's presentation this time has been very different - he has been schooled. He has taken the steps to alienate the US, removed it from international protective bodies including the UN Human Rights commission, secured the boarders (what keeps people out will also keep people in in this case) and through executive order gave an unelected billionaire access and power over the Federal Treasury in conflict with the democratic process in place - he has brought the US into the early days of being a dictatorship.
