Voices of the Unhoused: Poor People's Army Sets Up Encampment Near RNC to Protest GOP Policies

In Milwaukee, Democracy Now! speaks with members of an unhoused encampment that's been set up just minutes from the site of the Republican National Convention to protest policies that have exacerbated poverty and a housing crisis nationwide. The encampment is organized by the Poor People's Army, which is also set to host a protest rally and march on the first day of the convention. Cheri Honkala, the national spokesperson for the Poor People's Army, also joins us in Milwaukee. "People are not surviving poverty in this country," Honkala says of the motivation behind the march, in which hundreds of protesters, many of whom are themselves struggling with homelessness, are expected to join.

Greetings from Berlin/Germany 🎉thank God, we have a functionating social welfare system here in Germany and I would advice America to install one, too !! For example I get 1230 EUR every month from the social welfare as a disabled person, so I can pay my rent, food, nearly everything. Poverty and homelessness anyway are high in Germany but the state helps you to get a hotel room for example and pays for it. I am very glad and thankful to be born in Germany, love my country, and wish the great America to be up to date with social Infrastructure. To have a SOCIAL CAPITALISM, as we have. Homelessness in America is almost entirely the result low wages and expensive housing . Since the minimum wage was created, and up until the early 1980s it was regularly increased, so that someone earning minimum wage could always afford a 1br apartment almost anywhere in the US, except the most expensive areas, like Beverly Hills type areas. Today, in 98% of zip codes, no housing is affordable on minimum wage. Most homeless people have jobs, but they just can't afford housing. At the same time, there are 33 empty homes per homeless person in America. In some states, TX and FL, there's 70 empty homes per homeless person, and in Miss. there's over 250; empty homes per homeless person. Peace ✌️

Luckily, my spouse and I were able to pay off our mortgage early. We took the money we were spending to accelerate our mortgage repayment and invested it right away while we were both still working. I don’t know enough about Jill Stein to really form an opinion but Cornell West seems to be a little too out there for most Americans. Besides Joe Biden did a fine job in his first four years it’s just that he is fighting against a very strong cult figure in Trump. Trump is horrible but he’s got the charisma to get the people to follow him and that’s a pretty strong hard thing to fight against but I think he’s done pretty well considering what he’s up against. He’s brought this country back from Covid which was quite a struggle considering what Trump left us. Most economist will agree that Biden has done an outstanding job with what he’s had to work with and it’s just that the propaganda from the right it’s just so hard to fight against that it really nobody really realizes it other than us Democrats. I don’t care about Biden‘s age we all age but it’s his heart and his will and his tenacity to do something for this country and he really that he really cares about rather than tearing it down like Donald Trump wants to do it when we’re having no part of that the Democrats that is.

@@jerrylyns7331 those aren’t reasonable arguments. I asked a legit question. She certainly is articulate enough. So, you can’t say she’s uneducated. Are they all her biological children? Are some foster kids? If so, is she providing a safe, loving environment for those kids? Even with all the financial/racist inequalities in our society, we are responsible for our choices. Stop with the victim mentality. I’m old enough to remember how The Black Panther Party set up education and health centers in Oakland on their own. Incidentally, their early education program became the model for Head Start. It’s easy to complain why aren’t there more programs, etc. Fact is, while there could be, currently they’re not there. So why not bring all those people encamped, and volunteer their labor at Habitat for Humanity,and build/rehab housing.

Amy why are they still saying Trump moved the embassy to Jerusalem? All he did was hang a plaque on a already existing US office there! The poor have been made homeless and working poor have moved into the slums where the poor once lived. And the middle class has been cut in half since Reagan. I became homeless twice with 2 small children under Reagan while living in AZ. Once I moved to Missouri I've never been homeless, cost of living varies from state to state. Trump just lost picking J.D. Vance for his VP. LOL
