Democracy Now!

Күн бұрын

democracynow.org - On Monday, over 2,000 people packed into Riverside Church in Manhattan to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Democracy Now! It was an historic occasion in part because it marked the first time Noam Chomsky and Harry Belafonte appeared on stage together in conversation. The two have been longtime champions of social justice. Chomsky is a world-renowned political dissident, linguist and author who gained fame in the 1960s for his critique of the Vietnam War and U.S. imperialism. He is institute professor emeritus at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has taught for more than 50 years. Harry Belafonte is a longtime civil rights activist who was an immensely popular singer and actor. He was one of Martin Luther King’s closest confidants and helped organize the March on Washington in 1963.
Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs weekdays on nearly 1,400 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday. Watch our livestream 8-9AM ET: democracynow.org

Ashamed of myself for not knowing about this talk until Mr Belafonte's passing. Wonderful seeing him and Professor Chomsky together. Rest in power Mr Belafonte; I hope your legacy, politically and culturally, is re-awakened to a new, wider audience now that you've left us.

All the nay sayers are the ones who probably living a privileged life having no clue what Harry Belafonte paved the way for minorities to have a fraction of what we have today. Nor even care or give a shit about the stark differences Harry and other leaders like him have made in our lives. Having the ability to say those terrible things is exactly why thought leaders like Harry need to stem the tide.

Well, in case Brain Phelps was referring to me, the non obvious point is that with Noam Chomsky (and Zach Galifianakis) one needs eyes to see. Just saying. Noam being the 'honest' WOOD yang (who refers with blunt to heavy [Read: Seth Rogan]), and Zach being the 'earnest' WOOD yin (who refers with tight to coarse [Read: Heath Ledger]).

Makersplore, those are the exact reasons why Chomsky will never be seen on mainstream media. as well as the possibility that most TV viewers would be intellectually incapable of understanding what is being discussed. This content does not excite the dumb (m)asses like shows such as Duck Dynasty or Honey Boo Boo.

Nellie I was born in 1961 in Germany. 1 month before Obama. My father was a war veteran and my mother was german. My father could not bring us to the US because it was still illegal in many states for blacks and whites to marry or live together. We moved here in 67 after the supreme court decision of loving v VA. I am extremely disappointed in Obama's presidency because of his lack of progress on most issues (climate, health care, TPP, wars) He continued most of the policies of the Bush administration and implemented Romney care so at 55 I am humbled by these elders and democracy now for there continued optimism with this struggle of humanity.

I was born in 1981, and moved to the States in 1994 at age 13 from Brussels, Belgium. I had a slight culture shock. I'm also disappointed in Obama, and other world leaders, being an independent and global citizen, voted Green this time. I've been to Germany only once, to Aachen.
@noviceprepper5397
@noviceprepper5397 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Nellie. I voted Green in 2016 and 2012 but so few other Americans did that the Green Party has gained not even the 5 percent votes Dr. Stein said were needed to apply for federal money available to major parties. With President-elect Trump winning, the Green Party may gain some votes in 2020 but it's very hard to know. I actually thought the Greens had a shot this election cycle to reach 5% but the Obama's are so well liked (I like them myself), that they were able, with Mr. Sanders, to woo citizens to the Democrats who probably would've voted Green. Now Vice President Biden may or may not run in 2020, or Mr. Sanders may run again, I don't know. But I hope the Green Party gets 5% in 2020. P.S. And Mrs. Clinton may run again in 2020. She's probably exhausted now, campaigning through pneumonia (poor lady) but she may be willing to try again. It's hard to say. She did win the popular vote by over two million so she definitely has a base. I was going to vote for her but I was highly concerned about her campaign stated intention of establishing a no fly zone in Syria, and I didn't want the potential for a direct war with Russia, I just didn't want the world to have to deal with a world war. I considered President-elect Trump after I decided against Mrs. Clinton, but in the third Presidential debate he stated his intention to put forth a supreme court justice who is pro-life and I'm strongly pro-choice. I think that right is still trying to be wrestled away from women, and many women around the world don't even have a pretense to choose to bear a child or not - the world is largely patriarchal, a fact I dislike - women should share power in our world, so after I decided against either of the two major party candidates, I decided on Dr. Stein after viewing her stand on the issues. I especially like her stated intention to move us away from fossil fuels (Mrs. Clinton had also stated her intention to do a much lighter version). Now with President-elect Trump, we'll have to wait and see what he decides. As he is strongly pro-business, I just hope he doesn't kill the Paris Agreement, which isn't even an aggressive Agreement but is at least something. He may soften is position because the Republicans will want to win in 2020, and the Democrats will rally for the Senate and House in 2018. Unfortunately I'm pretty ignorant about Senate/House races across the country. Post election some media outlets are saying it's looking Red across the nation. I think I need to learn more about Senate/House races across the nation but I have health issues so it's hard to do in depth research but I'll work at reading more articles on the subject. Best regards.

BLM is a movement for people without privilege of an equal justice system that practices oppression for the corporate criminal industrial complex. As for Soros Trump just appointed Steve Mnuchin for Treasury a guy who worked for Soros I assume with all your wisdom you looked into that probably not..... How about 60% of the American workers make less than 40000 a year cant wait for Trump to fix that by lowering Corporate tax rates. Its not like that didnt work in the last 8 years. And Democracy Now is the best source for real news, in my opinion. That talk with Chomsky and Bellefonte gave me hope because they were able to put our very current events into a much broader context to show that our country has indeed been in worse shape, and it's not beyond the grasp of the left to set all of us on a better path. Don't worry my fellow Chomskyites concerned about the mortality of our good man, a young Glenn Greenwald is sharpening his blade for the next forty years.

i don't think greenwald is ancap, i always thought he was just a run of the mill liberal but with a conscience, but maybe he is a anarcho-syndyclist ?

@rossmeroe...There's an unsung (s)hero here. And that's Julie Robinson Belafonte who, like Mrs. Winnie Mandela, stood by her man during some awfully critical times in history by way of a marriage that, like a gay one, was not supposed to be, this despite the fact that Zipporah, wife of Moses of the Old Testament, was a Kushite who bore him two sons. A magnificently talented human being in her own right, she stood in the shadow of her then famous husband, never trying to take the limelight from him, all the while enduring racially charged and often cruel times. As many have posted before, it was therefore quite a shock to read that the proud Jamaican American had divorced such a woman, a shock equaled by Mandela's divorce from a woman and champion human rights activist, Winnie Mandela.

I agree with Chomsky a lot. But when it comes to practical implementation of those, it is a very different world. Sure you can tell a lot of things when you theorize something, and could be very logical. But when it comes to real world, you have to deal with a lot of imperfect conditions in order to implement those ideas. I like Bernie's ideas. But had he been elected, he will be countered in every corner just like it happened to Jimmy Carter

I can't believe Noam's wife was more cynical than he is! Although I know this is the hard facts we need to know. He is a legend if only we could hear these views on the BBC and the rest of terrestrial TV. We should all keep emailing them to ask to hear the great Noam Chomsky on mainstream media for a lengthy debate and not the usual rightwing 20sec speech on Question Time(BBC).. How can you ever explain a real intellectual politic point of view away in that time? Nae chance!

Eartha Kitt shared in her book "Confessions of a Sex Kitten" regarding her encounter with Harry: "During the time I was at the Village Vanguard I met Harry Belafonte. I thought he was very handsome and someone I would have liked to get to know better, but at the time our relationship remained quite formal. He seemed to busy catching little white flies, as he proved to me later in Philadelphia where, getting up from my bed, he said, 'I don't want you to take this seriously. No black woman can do anything for me.' There went my heart right into my feet." Eartha Kitt

RIP Mr. Belafonte you were a true shining light for all of Humanity. Here we are in 2023, it's not only horrible hate groups like the KKK, but people in our own Government Bodies at the US & State level, are trying to suppress progress of societal changes. Think as a Nation and world, political labels need to be put aside for HUMANISM!, Can be done, hope for the next generation, just watching the two Justins in the Tennessee Statehouse, standing up bravely and with maturity not seen with older adults. Hope Mr. Chomsky is doing Ok now himself, he's about mid-nineties himself.
