In both parties, a grassroots candidate arose and overthrew the orthodoxy...or came damn near doing so. In both cases, the party, going forward, will HAVE to change, and be more receptive to the base, or perish. SO, I think things are going to begin to get better, though I think the next 4 years may suck. American politics is actually really really predictable and that's whats wrong with it. The video is basically analyzing the crisis to come by observing the trend that's been ongoing since 1945 where power is traded based on public observation of who is in the white house. America's politics would be way better if it were actually unpredictable, like in those more progressive European countries where odd ball parties come to power when people get upset with the status quo, instead of just having some slightly odd candidate for the centrist parties like in America.
@adrianlowenberg8 жыл бұрын
Just one comment. I am from Spain, and have a lot of contact with people from both Germany and the UK as well. For us western Europeans, the GOP is not near centre, it's more ultra liberal hardcore right. Not far-right in most cases, but far from any mainstream party here in Europe like the ones in the European Popular Party, which are the classic centre/right parties here. edit: sorry, liberal as we understand it, so liberal in the economic sense, you could simplify with 'small government'

No. It's not. 2008 was said to be the beginning of a progressive era
@TC-st9nt8 жыл бұрын
I'd say that started with Clinton. Dubya was a Progressive too. Almost all of Obama's policies started with Dubya and he's done very little different. Even Obamacare isn't all that different from what McCain was going to do. In reality what we've had for the last 20+ years is Progressives on both sides of the aisle pushing Progressive ideals. Those on the Republican side pay lip service to non-Progressive ideals, but never actually try and stop them, just like Dems pay lip service against a lot of military interaction, but then still continue those policies. This election is the first time since Perot in the 90's that there's a real candidate who is not a Progressive. Whether Trump will win or not remains to be seen. If he does, it's the end of the 2nd Progressive Era, if he doesn't then it continues.
@BollocksUtwat8 жыл бұрын
president camacho He defines it by ignoring the staunchly radical neo conservative economic policies that have dominated since the 80s and does what everyone else does which is look at social values because that's what many of the modern western democracies have done -- separated economic inequality issues from social inequality and as we've progressed one end we've regressed in the other. Never forget that half of Bernie's platform is middle 20th century Republicanism but is seen as socialism today.

Sociologist have been charting the California and New York exodus to other conservative states or else foreign states for years now. California and New York have huge public debts, very large structural deficits, and are finding it hard to find ways to increase their critical infrastructure's population capacity, workers in those states suffer huge commute times as a result that steals on average two or more hours of each day in transit (time that could be spent with family, friends, or at work, or something else) both States risk insolvency if the exodus continues, and due to climate-change over-population and over-industrialization of Californian agriculture, they continue to deal with a long-drought. A drought which they are probably never going to make up for. New York is mostly only a powerhouse due to NYC which routinely has republican leaders, LOL.

IMO the Republican party is in a worse position. Half of them are staunch right social conservative christians and the other half are mostly just fiscally conservative only. The Moral rights want a nice, Christian nation and the fiscal rights want a small, unintrusive government. Both those ideologies are bascially competing with each other and each one just has to accept the other's wants in order to stay in power.
@TrevorVaubel8 жыл бұрын
Sure, but they vote for each other. They don't care until they're in power.
@philipmcniel49088 жыл бұрын
It's true that the Republican party is a combination of two groups who want some of the same things for two different reasons: Christians and hard-knocks/social-Darwinist conservatives. However, the reason why Christians want a small, unintrusive government is that they see a powerful government as tending toward regulating their ability to live in accordance with their believes (e.g. on the issue of being forced to attend and serve at same-sex weddings, e.g. in the case of Elaine Photography). The Christians really don't want an overbearing religious government; they just want the government not to enforce a society in which everyone is expected to set their faith aside when they enter the public square. All desired regulations to the contrary are seen as advancing a cause in which government has a legitimate interest, and which does not only flow from their faith (e.g. abortion--it's not just people of faith who believe government should regulate murder).
@Pinksugarelephant8 жыл бұрын
Fiscally conservative see their "not very oppressive" government as super oppressive.
@philipmcniel49088 жыл бұрын
Pinksugarelephant Compared to the tax % that we used to pay 100 years ago, and how much lower the bureaucratic barriers were to doing business and whatever else you wanted, I can see where they'd get the idea. Basically, the system we have right now is this: The Democrats want to act as the European governments do, and take half the people's money in taxes and use it to buy them stuff so that everyone has the same access to it (after skimming a lot off the top for themselves first, of course). The Republicans want to drop taxes so low that most of us could buy anything we need and just about anything we want, and voluntarily help each other obtain what they need. For now, we've reached a compromise: We have the high taxes (well, not quite as high as some European countries, but we're getting close to that neighborhood) and none of the benefits that Europeans get. The surplus money goes toward supporting the behemoth of our federal bureaucracy, supporting the care and feeding of 2.6 million employees, not counting independent contractors. We debate whether our government can and should tax us out of 2/3 of our income like Norway's, or whether we should go without being given stuff by the government, and have lots of money. We've compromised--higher taxes without the services!
@BeastinlosersHD8 жыл бұрын
The problem is, America needs more bureaucrats (not a more intrusive government, but we have lots of land, people, and resources that need to be managed). We have roughly reached a decent balance there, but some Americans don't want to participate in the work force. In my opinion the best social aid you could provide citizens, is the ability to find a job they want to do (for example the people who want to be NASA scientists, and truly are smart) should get money for college, in turn for a certain number of years working at NASA (like ROTC).

@777DrFeelgood7778 жыл бұрын
Ty Noguchi You’re just trading one form of big government for another. The Rand Paul types are vastly outnumbered by the moral policing types like Huckabee and Pence and the warmongering types like Lindsey Graham. The Republican party loves beating the drum of small government but they aren’t small government in practice. As far as "intellectual diversity" goes there’s inter-party conflict on both sides- I mean Sanders and Warren are very different Democrats than Obama and Hillary for example.
@tynoguchi74508 жыл бұрын
1) No entirely, sure there would be increase in spending in certain sections (military and business bail outs) of the government under a republican government, but with democrats i is completely across the broad (social programs, which combined is more than the entire military industrial complex). 2)You prove my point there, that there is more ideological diversity on the right, if you dislike them, well they have been elected by fellow Americans. 3) See point 1. 4) Sure there 'diversity' on the left but to the extent of the right in fact here are the 14 groups of the right: 1. The Alt Right 2. Paleo-cons 3. Neo-cons 4. Uptown Black cons 5. Downtown Black cons 6. Outcasts 7. Broadcast patriots 8. 'Islamaphobes' 9. Notional Review (monocle wearing elites) 10. Cruz cons/Never Trump 11. Trump cons 12. Factual Feminists 13. Free Speechers 14. Libertarians (right leaning)
