Rye can be difficult to cut because it is so tall/long it can be in the drum before the knife has cut it so either blocks up or pulls the plant out by the roots. A nice sunny day is best to harvest it.

After our walk through your rye on monday its a good standing crop Rye easy enough to cut if the sun is on your back just slow due to the amount of straw but your newer combine will be grand at it if our old boneshaker manages

They are some fine looking pullets. They look to be either pure bred Rhode Island Reds or a Rhode Island hybrid.
