We lost a handful out of the milking herd to BSE. It came onto the farm in the milk powder. The ministry vets studied our cows family lines to see why only a few were infected. They believed that certain lineages were vastly more susceptible. Probable why the numbers of humans that died from it were also lower than expected.

Think the other issue with the feed was that they reduced the temperature used making the feed cutting costs that enabled the BSE to be still viable. They didn’t take the risk again. It was similar to the pig farm using imported meat in their swill and shortcuts processing it that caused the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001 causing the ban on perfectly good swill. I do believe that we need standards as the example I use was poultry farmers putting extra hens in a cage to keep up in the race for profit. Even when you want to do the right thing, you can be forced to follow to stay in business 🤷‍♂️

I was working as a nurse in the early 90's and I remember nursing a lady who had left her remains to medical science. There was a whole procedure to go through in the event of her passing away. The lady had a dementia diagnosis but on contacting Edinburgh medical school they refused to take her body due to the risk of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. (The human form of mad cow disease). It was scary stuff at the time. As well as having to give up T-bone steaks. 🥩🐄

Not so much personally affected, but I do remember all the glowing Pires up and down the M6/M74 when I was traveling up and down constantly. And the Smells😢 Fingers crossed we don't see that again. Oh and get some decent tyres on the Landy🤣

I was a regular blood donor in the US at the time of BSE. You could only go to the UK so many times over years and still be eligible. I finally stopped eating beef on my trips (my mother who was with me still ate it). I would then "lie" to the blood bank that I hadn't been recently. I figured it was the beef and not the area itself that was the issue.

Poor Mike. I feel very sorry for him. He looks so sore. Maybe a block on his inner claw would help. Maybe a quicker heal than if it was his hip. Anyway, for you and for him, I hope he is up and running soon. I saw a patient with BSE and it resulted in a quick demise. By this point, the supermarkets couldn’t sell their beef, customers were too frightened to buy it and it was hugely reduced for those who would risk eating it.

too young to remember mad cow disease in the 80s but just old enough to remember foot and mouth. Hard times, can only imagine how it affected farmers. Your absolutely class with your niece and nephew Crawford its brilliant to see. Lucky to have you. I grew up working on the farm with my uncle and the memories I have are the best. The love for all things agri is deep rooted by those school holidays on the farm. Been in a couple of times in the last fortnite for breaky with the wife. Bloagburn BLT with the curried banana chutney 🤤 🤌 ohyaaaa.

I remember that happening when I was a kid, along with Chernobyl (mom canceled the milk delivery). It wasn’t until a few years (post 2018) that we were cleared to donate blood, plasma, breast milk, etc., in the US due to the risk of CJD. 😢

bse was bad ,but foot and mouth was worse from about feb to sept we lost half our cattle and all our sheep end of august it was hard all year. minstry vet visits every other day for weeks ,i think was worst year in my life first thing your thought when you woke up in the morning. I think im right in saying they changed the method to chemical treatment and they took it up to same temperature but not for as long and thats how it got through, beef prices were not very good for afew years and no animals over thirty months were allowed into the food chain anything over 30 months were burnt in otms scheme £300 for them .i know too many people died of it but thank god not as many people that they thought would die of it as they predicted would . lets hope its just a isolated case and its a simple explanation

My grandfather lost his farm to FMD in the 1967 outbreak. He'd recently gone into livestock, spent money on stock not long before the outbreak happened. A nearby farm had it, so the vets turned up one day and slaughtered the lot. There was no compensation and that was the end of the farm.

Hi i worked on a farm for the government that was run by the M.O.D as a helper with the burning off cattle and bringing in lorry after lorry of dead cattle for burning it was grim and very highly protected

Unfortunately his fertility will be affected approx. six weeks after he became lame especially if he ran a temperature. Even if he is sound again in two weeks his fertility will take a hit in a few weeks. You'll have to factor this into your breeding plans.
