EXPLOSIVES DEMOLITION | Carmeuse Lime and Stone Silos

Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) of Phoenix, Maryland, USA (acting as Explosives Subcontractor to Main Demolition Contractor, Great Lakes Demolition, Co. (GLDC) of Clyde, Ohio) performs the preparation for and explosives felling of the 150’ tall Carmeuse Lime and Stone Silos located in Huron, Ohio on April 12, 2024.
To avoid having to mobilize high-reach equipment to the site or perform personnel operations at high elevations, GLDC retained CDI to bring the 150’ silos to grade for downsizing and removal with equipment otherwise needed on the project to clear the site.
CDI worked with GLDC to prepare the structures for felling over a 2-day period, loaded explosives in a single day and brought the structures to grade, per plan.

Two things stood out to me on this one. 1) surprisingly breezy, I don't recall most demos happening with that much wind. Maybe acceptable as its a smaller one, with more steel and less concrete/rubble. 2) Excellent view of hinging the steel on the side not being blown out. Especially from the view by the shed with the stepladder.

I was the head of the demolition company that took it down. We spent two weeks with a special high pressure pump washing the building out before it dropped to eliminate the dust. It would have been a thousand times worse if we had not done that.

PERFECT by the Book demolition... oh yeah... CDI wrote the book. Front columns were notched top and bottom. Kicker charges were directly over them and boxed to contain shrapnel. Very short delay between shaped charges and kickers... maybe 100 milliseconds. On large building I have seen CDI use long delay which adds suspense. Back columns were only cut at bottom. This allowed back columns to act as hinges, directing forward motion of silo mass. Once columns cut and silos began their forward fall, gravity is doing most of the work. Like kicking the legs out from a stool.... amazing.

Under the right circumstances, you can probably see why the Francis Scott Key bridge ended up where it did. Whether it's hit from the side by a ship or you kick the girders out underneath it's going to fall.
