Now see THIS is why I love this family. They work on logic and practical principles. They suspect a problem..find the problem, assess this problem..Address the problem ! All the while re- thinking logically where the priorities lay. Frameing out..insulate..drywall,seal the house.Logic before winter. Finish Floors, finsh walls,& cosmetics .. winter inside work..practical.. Genius!! Its refreshing to see a young couple so clear on what priorities will move them forward understanding hard work is the driving force to get there! Im really proud of you two..💙💖😊⭐

You two are so lucky to have each other. You Doug, because Ashley goes along with all your plans and you Ashley, because you've got a guy who wants to do all this work for his family. I applaud the both of you. What a great pair you make. The values you are teaching Belle and Maverick will stay with them hopefully forever. I know that so many others feel this same way about you. Go team Doug and Ashley!!!!!

I live in south east Idaho and we have a lot of mice regardless due to all the fields. We have used Irish spring soap in the box and sat them throughout our house. The mice do not like the smell and is a safe way to keep them away. We use them in campers and barns and everywhere we don’t want them. Hope everything works out for y’all. I enjoy your videos.

Doug, I can't explain how much I appreciate your "get after it" attitude!! Sorry, I've complained about my husband before. When I told him I saw a rat in the house he said, "That's impossible because I put a trap outside 6 months ago!" You are a good husband and a good Father. I am proud of you, you put your love for your family into action. That speaks louder than words!! Take care and God Bless.

This made me laugh . Brought back memories when I was a younger . Living in a rented house , one day I decided to take a bath , instead of a shower. So there I am just relaxing in the tub and then I start hearing this scratching and chewing noise. Oh lord everyone in that house was a wake , when I got done acting a fool. They thought someone had broken in to the house. So I can just imagine what was under that tub. Lol

I lived in a nice rental house out in the country when my sons were teen, preteen age. I smelled the sewer gas from time to time but the owners lived far away. I never asked for it to be looked into. After I moved to another state I heard the house exploded and burned to the ground. Thank goodness nobody was there, I think of the times I was working as a nurse in town and they were on their own. Not sure if it could be an issue but glad you are fixing it.

Thanksgiving Day about 10 years ago we discovered that the kitchen floor had rotted out due to a pipe leak behind the wall near the sink. The day after Thanksgiving we started tearing out most of the kitchen. We moved the refrigerator into the living room, had a few side tables on which we put out microwave and toaster oven. We used a 7 gallon water container for cooking and drinking, and washed dishes in the bathroom sink. It was like that for way too long! I hope you guys get your kitchen put together faster than we did. My husband works 50+ hours a week at his job, so he did most of the repair tasks after work and on weekends. Y'all discovered quite a mess. As much damage as you've uncovered in the parts of the house you've already worked on, I'm not surprised by this mess. Pretty sure you expected much of it, too. Good luck!!

WOW - I will say that I lived in a house, with three kids, a dog, cat & her three kittens, plus the husband, while renovating for five {5} years. Winters in Minnesota just like Michigan. I was hard but we went about it in the same way you two are doing. We would tackle a project and find there was more work behind the walls than we expected. We would shift our attention to the most troublesome spots as needed. You two can do this because you are young, strong and extremely motivated. Set up temporary workstations for cooking, washing clothes and bathing. Eat well and sleep well. Every day you will move closer to the finished product which is your goal. Also, take time to go out and have fun with the kids. If there was one thing we did not do enough of was to spend time with the kids out of the house and the mess. God Bless your family.

Great idea kids! I agree 100%.. Get rid of the rotted boards, take care of the nasty yuck, and holes, insulate and then it'll be warmer for you all this winter. The winter is normally slower time so then you can get the rooms all fixed back then. Then you'll have a like a new home that's warm and have healthy air for you all to breath. Keep your heads up! I couldn't say exactly. They have spoken of getting a good deal based on the property and it's usable items. I haven't heard them speak directly of price. People buy homes just to remodel and sell. As before suggested. You need to seal up all holes and accesses with steel wool. Believe me from 50 yrs of experience Those little devils will chew right through that spray foam. Those devils can not chew through steel wool. You can still spray foam for insulation but you have to have that steel barriers to stop them. You know you don't want all those little devils messing up all your hard work. Little advice from the old guy next door. 😉

Boy! As a woman who sorts laundry on the floor, I really dislike hallway laundries. My dream laundry would be to have a separate laundry room. I'd gladly share it with 1/2 bath and water heater, but would like access to the outside. It's so convenient when shaking out something to be laundered, and also something that needs to be soaked, or dyed. Not everyone is going to dye things, but I would do more of it, if I knew I had a space that was safe. I'd also like a nice sink for hand washing. Hope you're wearing protective masks while working to clean up that area. It's icky work, but so glad you won't have to live with it anymore. Nice work.

Heads up: I know you don't have a Ford, but our Ranger had it's wires chewed through not once but TWICE. It was about $800 each time. The wiring is vegetable oil based. To get rid of the mice, we tried everything....Mothballs, fake coyote urine, you name it. The only thing that worked was peppermint oil. My neighbors think we are into Santeria with the oils we use on the engines of our vehicles. We have these metal tins with small holes drilled in the top, small magnets are glued on the back of them and a piece of scrap wool yarn is on the inside. There are 3-4 tins placed throughout each engine. We douse the scrap wool every couple of weeks. It's the only thing that gets rid of the mice.

I know you'll get the first things done before the coming winter weather.

Bless your hearts. It’s a good thing you’re so good at what you’re doing. Ashley you’re a strong girl, I’d be crying if I ran into that mess. You’ll get it done because you two are troopers. God bless.

You're making the right decision. Yes, it's much better to work on all outdoor stuff & work on interior during the winter mths. Luv you guys. You really take these negative situations in good stride. God Bless you all.

Sorry to see you get another tough break, though I admire the way that you reacted. You were both calm and ready to see the upside because it set urgent new goals. It was clear that cleaning, rebuilding, sealing things up, insulating the remainder of the house and fixing the vent issues became your primary focus. A warm, rodent free house is much closer and more important than an instant fully fitted kitchen. Living in a warmer, weather proof, clean, safe, house will far more comfortable. Fitting out the remaining rooms during the long cold dark winter days will still be challenging, but far more comfortable. It was great to see the motivation and determination written on your faces. I hope you are now running out of nasty surprises

May I suggest, to get the most benefit from Odoban, pre-clean the area with bleach water. The bleach water will remove the top layer of muck plus kill any mold. Anyway, I always respect the attention to detail you give your DIY projects.

Thanks for the vlog. I just wanted to add another voice of support for getting rid of the half bath. I agree with you that one bathroom is sufficient. I'm currently looking at floor plans for houses and most of them have way too many bathrooms. All I can think about is all that extra cleaning! Great job on your reno so far!

You two make a great team, it's awesome how you both are on board with what needs to be done, and I'm so impressed with your cleanliness, no contractor would bother removing nests or cleaning, it takes a good home owner to make it right.I can't wait to follow this project.

So much for spreading the work and expense out over two years!! I am glad you have the skills to do this work. When you are finished you will have a wonderful home. Scary to think you have been breathing sewer gas all this time! Living without a bathroom and kitchen will be challenging I hope you can get it closed up before bad weather. With God's help all things are possible. I am sure a lot of people will be praying for you as well as I. You will have a safe healthy house when you are done. And beautiful! Your work in the bedrooms proves it will be beautiful when you are done.
