Yes, I certainly agree! The little ancient house that we bought, took us 7 unplanned years to renovate and restaurate, what, with a newborn and a 6 year old and both working. Now, the house has got at least another 100 years in it now....every time we opened up a wall , a ceiling or a floor, it had to come out and be completely renewed But at least,we kept it´s ancient character

Hey, not sure if you check your old posts for comments, but I thought I would give you a pointer in the garden for ticks, fleas, and spiders. I checked down a ways in this comment section to see if anyone had, and not seeing it I knew you might like to get some tips. The best thing in the yard, around the house is DE., or better known as Diatomaceous Earth! Get the edible kind. Just sprinkle around or till it in to planting area, keeps slugs away too. Safe for the pets, they can roll in it and have it in their food for worming too. Another thing that's great in the house or van is Cinnamon. Chases bad bugs away and keeps good ones around. That's my belated Birthday present + Christmas gift to you Emily

The most brilliant bit in this video, is where your dog doesn't know whether he still lives in a van, or whether he has a whole new plot of land to roam and explore, and to play in. And, weirdly, you two are maybe at that same stage - worried about a wall which may fall down, or which you'll have to do something about. I'd say this is a good mental and physical space to be in. The van is still there, as your home from the past, but soon you'll move into this lovely old house, and maybe the wall will always be threatening to fall down, but it can still be your new treasured space. Keep going. It's going to be fine.

Re: Ticks - Here in tick-central (Massachusetts) we always had a problem with ticks. Seresto collar significantly decreased the number of ticks the dogs got crawling on them, but putting up a 4" livestock fence (like yours, but bigger holes) has made them all but disappear. On current dog, she's 5.5 years old and has never had a tick attach (and has only brought in one). So, I think the fence makes all the difference in keeping wild critters from passing through and dropping them. Hope you stay tick-free! *fingers-crossed*

Regarding the office room, note that you might want to colour the limestone plaster in whatever colour you want the inside of the room to be. If you paint on the limestone plaster then it is quite likely that the plaster will come off after some years. At least that is what is happening in the house built in 1901 that I live in. What happens is that moisture containing salt is traveling from the ground into the wall. If there is paint on the plaster then the salt crystallizes between the stone and the plaster making the plaster come loose. If there is no paint then the salt will crystallize on the surface of the plaster and one can use a vacuum cleaner to remove it. The method using coloured limestone plaster was the recommendation from a specialist.

If you are going lime render the office I suggest investigating the french method of using a compressor to spray the lime onto the walls. It is then roughly troweled. Afterwards it can be lime plastered normally. Escape to rural France used this method on his small cottage. It's a method we will use on some of our outbuildings when I get to that stage.

Sloping walls are normal for old rubble stone houses in Ireland and UK, the walls were tapered partly as it provided a wide base on the ground rather than deep foundations. Amazing that all these stud walls didn't have insulation. As for the office, include some underfloor insulation and underloor heating, with bare walls you'll appreciate the underflooring heating. Where you have ivy, first cut a 12inch gap at the base of walls, that will kill it higher up, do try to remove it, but be careful where it has grown through walls, so it may be wise to chemically kill it first. I use repeated spraying with a mixture of glyphosate (only buy from agricultural outlets as it's much cheaper) and washing up liquid. The washing up liquid helps breakthrough the waxiness of the ivy leaves. Although glyposate is used by farmers I would only use it away from areas animals frequent and well away from anywhere you or othes may want may to grow things, it is supposed to break down in the soil, but I prefer not to risk it. Indeed I have left areas of ground unplanted for several years while I work to remove weeds and pervasive grasses like scutch. Lastly, have you inspected the barn to ensure no corrugated tin is likely to flay away? If it's going to take years to renovate the house I would think of creating a protected living space in the end of the barn.

Hi, thank you, some great tips. Yeah we will be doing some welding on the barn for sure so we have a better area for the long time it’s going to take to do the Renos 😂🤦🏻♀️
