Thanks for covering a Spassky game. He seems to be largely neglected.

That bishop on b2 was an absolute terror as soon as the position opened and for the rest of the game. Interesting how Spassky leveraged mate threats with the queen, bishop, and knight to gain a tempo or positional advantage with his other pieces. Great game!

Great vid as always. Spassky, Smyzlov and Korchnoi are sometimes overlooked in spite of their many absolutely top level games.

this is sort of like a gelfand game, where you shift from positional play to turning on the initiative, pretty cool

Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer -- The Rolling Stones and The Beatles of chess!
@PowerPlayChess6 жыл бұрын
:) But which was which?
@jprw6 жыл бұрын
Spassky = The Stones (slightly more creative and hedonistic); Fischer = The Beatles (pure perfection)
@PowerPlayChess6 жыл бұрын
I would say the Beatles were far more creative than the Stones...

Thank you Daniel. After his famous match vs Fischer, Spassky turned out to be the most famous looser in history. But as you said, he was such a power. Kasparov could not beat him earlier than 1987 and he managed to draw with Garry 2-2. Tal aslo praised his chess knowledge. Please cover more brilliant games of spassky

How Spassky plays the opening/beginning middle game a bit like Karpov it seems, very sensible chess without many risks..then out of nowhere he finds a Kasparov-like attack and from that point his only gear seems to be forwards towards the kill. I feel that Spassky is one of the world champions that is not appreciated as much as he deserves. Maybe because he lived in the era of possibly the greatest player ever.
